Chapter 3: The Call From The Past

Michael stared at the unknown number glowing on his phone screen.

The room seemed to shrink around him.

His son was still in his arms.

His wife stood only a few feet away.

And Sarah, the woman who had worked quietly in his home for years, looked like she was carrying a secret heavy enough to break her.

The phone kept ringing.

Victoria's eyes immediately moved toward the screen.

Then back to Michael.

"Don't answer that.""

The words came too quickly.

Too urgently.

Michael noticed.

A few minutes ago, he might have ignored it.

He might have trusted the woman he married.

But something inside him had changed.

"Why?"" he asked.

Victoria's expression softened.

"Because this is exactly what I was talking about. Someone is trying to manipulate you.""

Michael looked at the phone.

The caller ID remained blank.

Unknown.

The message beneath it was still there.

*If you want to know who really tried to hurt Ethan, answer the phone before Victoria does.*

His heart beat harder.

Slowly, he pressed the answer button.

Nobody spoke at first.

Only silence.

Then a man's voice came through.

"Michael Harrington?""

Michael straightened.

"Who is this?""

A pause.

"I was hoping I would never have to contact you.""

Michael looked at Sarah.

She had gone pale.

"How do you know my name?""

The voice on the other end sighed.

"Because I was there the night your son was born.""

Everything stopped.

Michael's fingers tightened around Ethan.

"What?""

Victoria stepped forward.

"Hang up.""

Michael looked at her.

The fear on her face wasn't hidden anymore.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Fear.

The voice continued.

"Mr. Harrington, you don't know me. But I know your family.""

"Who are you?""

"My name is Daniel Carter.""

The name meant nothing.

But Sarah reacted.

Her eyes widened.

Michael noticed immediately.

"Sarah.""

She looked away.

"Do you know this person?""

Sarah didn't answer.

The silence was enough.

Victoria suddenly spoke louder.

"Michael, this is ridiculous. A stranger calls you, says a random name, and suddenly everyone is guilty except the person accusing me?""

Michael ignored her.

"Daniel Carter," he repeated into the phone.

"Why were you at the hospital when my son was born?""

The man's voice became quieter.

"Because I was the security supervisor assigned to the maternity floor.""

Michael frowned.

"I never heard of you.""

"That's because I was fired two days later.""

"Why?""

Another pause.

"Because I reported something I wasn't supposed to report.""

Michael felt a chill.

"What did you report?""

The voice on the phone lowered.

"That someone tried to enter your wife's hospital room after midnight.""

Victoria's face changed.

Michael saw it.

A tiny movement.

A brief flash of recognition.

But it was there.

"Who?"" Michael asked.

"I don't know.""

Daniel answered.

"But I know it wasn't a nurse.""

Michael glanced toward Victoria.

She immediately shook her head.

"No.""

The word was almost a whisper.

Michael's stomach tightened.

"Why are you telling me this now?""

"Because I saw the news last week.""

"What news?""

"Your family photos. Your son turning one. Your wife smiling beside him.""

Daniel paused.

"And I realized the baby I tried to protect is still in danger.""

The sentence landed like a punch.

Michael walked away from everyone.

Toward the window.

"Tell me everything.""

The voice became heavier.

"Your son was born at 2:14 a.m. During the shift change, a woman entered the maternity hallway.""

"Did you see her face?""

"No.""

"Then how do you know it wasn't a nurse?""

"Because she wasn't wearing a hospital badge.""

Michael looked down at Ethan.

His son was playing with the button on his shirt, unaware of the storm around him.

"What happened?""

"I stopped her before she reached your wife's room.""

Michael's throat tightened.

"What did she say?""

"She said she was family.""

Silence.

"Family?""

"Yes.""

Michael looked at Victoria.

She was watching him carefully.

"Did she give a name?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

"She said she was Ethan's real mother.""

The room went completely silent.

Sarah covered her mouth.

Victoria stepped back.

Michael felt like the floor beneath him had shifted.

"What?""

Daniel continued.

"I thought she was mentally unstable. We removed her from the floor. I reported it.""

"And then?""

"The report disappeared.""

Michael's eyes narrowed.

"Disappeared?""

"Someone from the hospital administration came to my office the next morning and told me the incident never happened.""

Michael's voice became colder.

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

"You're telling me someone erased a security report involving my newborn son?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Because someone didn't want you asking questions.""

The call suddenly became silent.

Michael checked the screen.

Still connected.

"Daniel?""

The man spoke again.

"Mr. Harrington, there is something else.""

"What?""

"I saw your wife's medical records.""

Victoria's face changed.

Michael noticed.

"What about them?""

"Your wife was not alone when she gave birth.""

Michael felt his blood run cold.

"What does that mean?""

Before Daniel could answer, the call cut off.

Michael stared at the phone.

"No.""

He immediately called back.

The number didn't exist.

A fake number.

A disposable phone.

Something planned.

"Michael.""

Victoria's voice broke through.

He turned slowly.

She looked devastated.

But he couldn't tell if it was because she was hurt or because she had been exposed.

"What was that?"" he asked.

"I don't know.""

"You don't know anything.""

The bitterness in his voice surprised even him.

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"You think I don't love Ethan?""

Michael didn't answer.

That hurt her.

"I carried him for nine months.""

Her voice shook.

"I nearly died giving birth to him.""

Sarah looked down.

Michael noticed.

"Sarah.""

She looked up.

"Is there something you know?""

Sarah hesitated.

Victoria immediately stepped between them.

"Don't.""

Michael's eyes narrowed.

"Don't what?""

"Don't let her lie to you.""

Sarah whispered:

"I never wanted this.""

Michael looked at her.

"Then tell me.""

Sarah closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked like she was fighting with herself.

Then she reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I kept this because I was afraid.""

Michael took it.

"What is it?""

Sarah's voice trembled.

"A copy of something I found eight years ago.""

Michael unfolded the paper.

At first, the words meant nothing.

Then he saw the date.

The date was from before he had ever met Victoria.

Before their wedding.

Before Ethan.

His eyes moved lower.

And he stopped breathing.

Because the document contained a name.

A name he recognized.

A name connected to his own family.

"What is this?"" he whispered.

Sarah looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"It's the reason I never left this house.""

Michael looked up.

"Sarah...""

She swallowed.

"I wasn't staying because of the job.""

The paper shook slightly in his hand.

"Then why?""

Sarah looked toward Ethan.

Then at Victoria.

And finally back at Michael.

"Because eight years ago, I promised someone I would protect your son.""

Michael felt his chest tighten.

"My son wasn't born eight years ago.""

Sarah's face turned pale.

"I know.""

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Michael looked at the document again.

The signature at the bottom.

The date.

The impossible truth hidden in the ink.

Then Sarah spoke the words that changed everything.

"Mr. Harrington...""

May you like

Her voice cracked.

"Ethan is not the first child Victoria tried to keep away from you.""
