Chapter 7: The Woman Who Came Back
Michael stared at the message.
*You want your first son? Come alone.*
His eyes moved to the second line.
*Or the second one won't make it through the night.*
His grip tightened around the phone.
The person who sent it knew everything.
They knew about Lucas.
They knew about Ethan.
They knew exactly which words would make him act without thinking.
And that was dangerous.
Because Michael Harrington had spent his entire life making decisions with his head.
But now, someone was pulling on his heart.
"Give me the phone.""
Victoria's voice broke through the darkness.
Michael turned.
"No.""
She looked at him.
"Michael, please.""
"Why?""
The question came out sharper than he intended.
Victoria froze.
"Why do you need to see it?""
She looked hurt.
But he didn't stop.
"Why are you so afraid of this message?""
"I don't know who sent it.""
"Neither do I.""
He held up the phone.
"But they know about Lucas.""
Victoria's face tightened.
A reaction.
Small.
But real.
"You know more than you're telling me.""
She looked away.
Michael felt something inside him crack.
"After everything tonight, you're still protecting secrets.""
"I am trying to protect you.""
"No.""
His voice became cold.
"You are trying to protect yourself.""
The words hit her.
She looked down.
Before she could respond, Sarah stepped forward.
"Mr. Harrington.""
Michael turned.
Sarah looked terrified.
"If someone knows about Lucas and Ethan, then this isn't just about the past.""
"What are you saying?""
"I'm saying whoever sent that message has been watching this family.""
A chill ran through the room.
Michael looked toward the dark hallway.
The mansion suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Every corner.
Every room.
Every person who had walked through the doors.
Who could he trust?
Then Ethan started crying.
A soft, frightened cry.
Michael immediately moved toward him.
"It's okay.""
He took his son from Sarah.
Ethan grabbed his father's shirt.
Michael closed his eyes.
For years, he had thought providing a beautiful home and a comfortable life was enough.
Tonight, he realized safety was something different.
Safety was being there.
Holding them.
Protecting them.
Not just paying for everything.
The alarm suddenly stopped.
The silence afterward was worse.
Michael looked at the security panel near the door.
"Why did the alarm stop?""
Nobody answered.
Then Sarah whispered:
"Because someone turned it off.""
Michael looked at her.
"What?""
She pointed toward the hallway.
"The system can only be disabled from the main control panel.""
Michael frowned.
"Only I have access.""
Victoria went pale.
"No.""
Michael looked at her.
"What?""
She swallowed.
"My mother had access.""
The words landed heavily.
Michael stared.
"You gave her access to my house?""
"I didn't know she still had it.""
"When did you remove it?""
Victoria said nothing.
Michael didn't need an answer.
"Victoria.""
"I forgot.""
The honesty was almost worse.
"You forgot?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I was trying to forget everything connected to that time.""
Michael shook his head.
"People don't forget things like this.""
The sound of footsteps interrupted them.
Everyone turned.
The hallway camera monitor suddenly flickered back on.
The screen showed the front entrance.
A woman stood outside the door.
Michael stared.
He didn't recognize her.
She looked older.
Tired.
Her dark coat was soaked from the rain.
But there was something familiar about her face.
Sarah gasped.
"No.""
Michael looked at her.
"You know her.""
Sarah slowly nodded.
"Yes.""
The woman outside looked directly into the security camera.
Then she lifted a small envelope.
The camera audio clicked on.
Her voice filled the room.
"Michael Harrington.""
Everyone froze.
The woman continued.
"I know you can hear me.""
Michael stepped closer to the screen.
"Who are you?""
The woman stared into the camera.
"My name is Rachel Carter.""
The room went silent.
Victoria whispered:
"No...""
Michael looked at her.
"You know her.""
Victoria's face collapsed.
"Yes.""
Rachel continued.
"I have spent eight years waiting for this moment.""
Michael felt his heart pound.
Eight years.
Just like Sarah said.
Rachel looked into the camera.
"I didn't come here to hurt you.""
A pause.
"I came because my nephew deserves the truth.""
Michael's hands tightened around Ethan.
"Lucas.""
Rachel nodded.
"He knows his father's name.""
Michael froze.
"What?""
"He found out.""
Victoria covered her mouth.
Rachel continued.
"He knows Michael Harrington exists.""
The words cut deeper.
A child.
His child.
Knowing his father existed.
And still believing he was abandoned.
"Where is he?"" Michael asked.
Rachel's expression changed.
Pain.
Anger.
Both.
"That depends.""
"On what?""
"On whether you actually want the truth.""
Michael stepped toward the door.
Victoria grabbed his arm.
"Don't.""
He looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because Rachel hates me.""
"Maybe she has a reason.""
Victoria released his arm.
The hurt on her face was immediate.
But Michael couldn't comfort her.
Not now.
He opened the door.
Rain poured into the entrance hall.
Rachel stood outside.
Up close, Michael could see the exhaustion in her eyes.
She looked like someone who had carried a burden for years.
"You look like him.""
Michael froze.
"What?""
Rachel looked at him.
"Lucas.""
A painful silence.
"He has your eyes.""
Michael swallowed.
"Where is he?""
Rachel looked past him.
At Victoria.
Her expression hardened.
"You really kept him.""
Victoria stepped back.
Rachel laughed bitterly.
"After everything, you still built the perfect family.""
Victoria's voice trembled.
"Rachel, please.""
"No.""
Rachel looked at her.
"You don't get to ask me for anything.""
Michael stepped between them.
"Enough.""
He looked at Rachel.
"I need answers.""
Rachel nodded.
"You deserve them.""
She reached into her bag.
And pulled out a folder.
"This contains everything.""
Michael took it.
His fingers shook slightly.
"Why now?""
Rachel looked at Ethan.
Then at him.
"Because someone tried to hurt your baby.""
Michael's expression changed.
Rachel continued.
"And because the same person who hid Lucas is now trying to silence me.""
Sarah stepped forward.
"Who?""
Rachel looked at her.
"You know.""
Sarah went pale.
Michael noticed.
"What does she mean?""
Rachel looked between them.
Then she said:
"The person who attacked Ethan wasn't trying to hurt him.""
Michael frowned.
"What?""
"They were trying to scare Sarah.""
The room went still.
Sarah looked confused.
"Why me?""
Rachel opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Sarah.
Taken years ago.
Michael looked at it.
Then at the date.
His face changed.
Because Sarah wasn't in the picture as a housekeeper.
She was standing beside Emily Carter.
Holding a newborn baby.
His first son.
Michael slowly looked up.
"Sarah.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Mr. Harrington...""
His voice was barely a whisper.
"Who are you?""
Sarah looked at Lucas's photograph.
Then at Ethan.
And finally at Michael.
"I was the person who promised Emily I would protect both of her children.""
Michael stopped breathing.
"Both?""
Sarah nodded.
And the next words shattered the last piece of his understanding.
"Because Lucas wasn't her only secret.""
May you like
She looked toward Victoria.
"Ethan wasn't born the way you were told.""
