Chapter 7: The Secret Behind the Locked Door

“Because Daniel is here.””

Marcus's final words echoed through my phone before the line went dead.

For three seconds, I couldn't move.

Then I pushed myself away from the conference table so quickly that my chair toppled backward.

“Call him back!”” I cried.

Olivia was already dialing the number.

It went straight to voicemail.

Nia grabbed my arm before I could rush toward the door.

“Aaliyah, wait. You're not going anywhere alone.””

“My husband is inside that house with Daniel!””

“Your husband is the person who betrayed you,” Nia replied, her voice shaking.

“And Daniel may be dangerous. We are not going to make this worse by running into an unknown situation.””

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to drive straight to the house, tear open the front door, and demand to know what Daniel had done to my family.

But then my daughter moved beneath my ribs.

A small, insistent flutter.

I pressed my palm against my stomach and forced myself to breathe.

Olivia ended the call and immediately contacted the authorities, providing the address, the photograph, and the details of Marcus's emergency call.

“They're sending officers to check the property,” she told us.

“We need to remain available and avoid interfering with the investigation.””

I stared at the phone.

Another message appeared from the unknown number.

Don't let him destroy the blue box.

I showed Olivia.

She photographed the message and added it to her notes.

“Whoever this is, they appear to know what is inside the house,” she said.

“That doesn't mean we should trust them.””

My phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered so quickly I nearly dropped it.

“Aaliyah?””

His voice sounded distant, as though he were speaking from the bottom of a well.

“Where are you?””

“In the spare room.””

“Are you alone?””

A pause.

Then he whispered, “No.””

I gripped the phone.

“Marcus, listen to me. Leave the house if you can. The police are coming.””

“I can't leave without the box.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel says there's something inside it that belongs to him.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does he mean?””

Marcus took a shaky breath.

“I don't know. I found the box in the back of the wardrobe, exactly where you said it would be. It was locked. Daniel came out of the hallway before I could open it.””

“Why was he in our house?””

“He says he has a legal right to be here.””

“Daniel doesn't have a right to enter our home without permission.””

“I know that now.””

His voice cracked.

Then I heard another voice.

Daniel.

“Give me the phone, Marcus.””

Marcus said something too quiet for me to hear.

Daniel's voice grew sharper.

“You've already made enough mistakes. Don't make another one.””

I heard a struggle.

Then the call ended.

I stared at the screen, my hand trembling.

Nia pulled me into her arms.

“Help is coming,” she whispered.

But all I could think about was the blue sewing box.

My mother had kept it beside her bed when I was a child. She used to sit with me on rainy afternoons, teaching me to sew buttons onto school uniforms and repair torn seams.

Whenever I complained that a knot was impossible to untangle, she would smile.

“Don't pull harder, darling. Look for the loose end.””

I had never understood why she repeated that sentence so often.

Now I wondered whether she had been trying to tell me something else.

Twenty minutes later, an officer called Olivia.

The police had reached the house.

Daniel was no longer inside.

Marcus had been found in the spare room, shaken but conscious, with a cut above his eyebrow. The blue sewing box was on the floor beside him.

I covered my mouth.

“Is he hurt badly?”” I asked.

Olivia spoke to the officer, listened, and then turned toward me.

“His injury appears minor, but they're arranging a medical assessment. They want him to remain at the property while they establish what happened.””

“Can I speak to him?””

“They're allowing a brief call.””

My phone rang a moment later.

Marcus.

I answered.

“Aaliyah?””

“Are you all right?””

“Yes.””

“Tell me what happened.””

He exhaled shakily.

“Daniel was waiting inside. He said he had come to retrieve documents that belonged to his company. I told him I was taking the sewing box because it belonged to you.””

“And then?””

“He tried to take it from me.””

I closed my eyes.

“Did he hurt you?””

“He shoved me against the desk. I hit my head.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Marcus, why didn't you leave?””

“Because he opened the box.””

I went still.

“What?””

“He had a key. He unlocked it before I could stop him.””

A chill ran down my spine.

“There was a key to my mother's sewing box?””

“Yes.””

I stared at Olivia, who was listening beside me.

“What was inside?””

Marcus was silent for several seconds.

Then he said, “A letter, a small envelope, and a photograph.””

“Whose photograph?””

“I don't know. I didn't get a good look.””

“Where are they now?””

“Daniel took the photograph. I managed to keep the envelope.””

I felt my heart pound.

“Do you have it?””

“Yes.””

“Don't open it. Give it to the police.””

“I will.””

His voice softened.

“Aaliyah, there's something else.””

I waited.

“Daniel said your mother stole something from him.””

I looked at Nia.

“What did she supposedly steal?””

“He wouldn't tell me. He said the envelope would explain everything, and that if I handed it over, he'd make sure the house transfer went through without any further trouble.””

My mouth went dry.

“He offered to give you the house?””

“He said he would make the financial problems disappear.””

I let out a bitter laugh.

“After helping create them?””

“I know.””

“No, Marcus. You don't know. You have no idea how many times I've sat awake at night wondering how I failed to see what was happening in my own home.””

“I am sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

Those words had once been enough to make me forgive him.

Now they sounded like coins dropped into an empty well.

“Give the envelope to the police,” I repeated.

“Then speak to your attorney. Do not negotiate with Daniel.””

“I won't.””

“And Marcus?””

“Yes?””

“You don't get to use protecting me as an excuse to enter my home again without my permission.””

He fell silent.

“I understand.””

I ended the call.

For several minutes, I couldn't speak.

Then Olivia received another update.

The officers had found signs that someone had searched the spare room and disturbed several drawers. They had also recovered a torn piece of paper from beneath the desk.

The paper appeared to be part of an old financial agreement.

And on the surviving edge was a name.

*Evelyn Hassan.*

My mother-in-law.

I stared at the photograph Olivia showed me.

“What does Evelyn have to do with this?””

“We don't know yet,” Olivia replied.

“But we need to speak with her.””

I called Evelyn immediately.

She answered on the first ring.

“Has Marcus been hurt?””

“He's being examined. Evelyn, the police found a piece of paper with your name on it.””

Silence.

Then I heard her draw a shaky breath.

“I was afraid this would happen.””

My heart began pounding.

“Afraid of what?””

“I need to tell you something about your mother.””

I gripped the phone.

“My mother died four years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then what could you possibly know about her?””

Evelyn began to cry.

“Your mother didn't just leave you an inheritance, Aaliyah. She left something in my care, too.””

I looked at Olivia.

“What did she leave with you?””

“A document. I was supposed to give it to you if Daniel ever came near your family.””

My blood turned cold.

“Where is it?””

“At my house.””

“Go and get it.””

“I can't.””

“Why not?””

Evelyn's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Because Daniel came here an hour ago.””

I stood frozen.

“What?””

“He said he was looking for Marcus. Before he left, he told me that if I ever revealed what happened four years ago, he would make sure I lost everything.””

My throat tightened.

“Evelyn, what happened four years ago?””

She was quiet for so long that I thought the call had disconnected.

Then she whispered six words that changed everything.

“Your mother saved my life, Aaliyah.””

And before I could ask her what she meant, someone knocked on Evelyn's front door.

Three hard knocks.

May you like

She gasped.

Then the line went dead.
