Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Affair

Marcus reached the front door before anyone else could move.

“Marcus, wait,” Evelyn whispered.

He ignored her.

Through the frosted glass, I could see two figures standing on the porch. One was tall and broad-shouldered, wearing the charcoal suit I remembered from the photograph. The other was a woman holding a leather briefcase.

Daniel.

My husband's business partner.

The man who had supposedly helped Marcus build his future.

The man who had been paying Vanessa.

Marcus unlocked the door.

Daniel stood beneath the porch light, his expression composed, as though he had arrived for a routine business meeting rather than the collapse of a family.

“Marcus,” he said.

“I'm glad you're here.””

Marcus stared at him.

“You've got five seconds to explain why you're involved with my mistress.””

Daniel's gaze moved briefly past him, toward Vanessa.

Then he looked back at Marcus.

“Let's not make this emotional.””

Marcus laughed without humor.

“You paid her to get close to me.””

“I paid her for consulting work.””

“You paid her to help steal my inheritance.””

Daniel sighed.

“That's a serious accusation.””

“And you got her pregnant.””

For the first time, Daniel's expression faltered.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

So did Marcus.

Daniel adjusted his cuff.

“I'm not discussing personal matters on a doorstep.””

“Then you should have thought about that before you turned my life into a business transaction.””

The woman beside Daniel stepped forward.

“My name is Rebecca Shaw. I'm Daniel's attorney. I suggest everyone remain calm.””

Marcus gave a cold smile.

“Excellent. We can start by having your client explain the payment agreement in my living room.””

Rebecca glanced at Daniel.

He nodded once.

They entered.

The atmosphere changed immediately.

Daniel looked around the living room, taking in the broken vase, the papers scattered across the table, and Vanessa's tear-streaked face.

His eyes settled on the photograph of him and Vanessa.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

“You shouldn't have shown them that.””

Evelyn's chin lifted.

“You shouldn't have brought this into my family.””

Daniel placed his briefcase on the coffee table.

“Let's be clear about something. Nobody here has been forced to do anything. Every arrangement was voluntary.””

“Voluntary?”” Marcus repeated.

He picked up the payment agreement.

“Did you write this?””

Daniel glanced at it.

“Yes.””

“Did you pay Vanessa fifty thousand dollars?””

“For legitimate services.””

“Did you pay my mother eighty thousand?””

“That was a private loan.””

“Did you use either arrangement to gain access to my inheritance?””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“I advised you on an investment. You considered it. That's all.””

Marcus held up the document bearing what appeared to be his signature.

“I never signed this.””

Rebecca reached for the page.

“May I examine that?””

Marcus handed it to her.

She studied it without speaking, then turned to Daniel.

“Did you prepare this document?””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“It was a preliminary authorization.””

“Was Marcus's signature obtained with his consent?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Rebecca looked at Marcus.

“I can't advise you on your legal position, but you should preserve this document and avoid making assumptions about its authenticity until it has been independently examined.””

Daniel gave her a sharp look.

“Rebecca.””

She closed the folder.

“I'm telling him what is appropriate.””

For the first time, Daniel appeared irritated with someone other than the family.

Vanessa moved toward him.

“Daniel, tell them the truth.””

He didn't look at her.

“Not now.””

“You promised you'd protect me.””

Daniel's eyes turned cold.

“I promised you compensation for your work.””

“You promised me we'd leave together!””

The words escaped before she could stop herself.

Marcus stared at her.

Rebecca slowly lowered her briefcase onto the floor.

Daniel's expression became dangerously blank.

“Vanessa, I suggest you stop talking.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Why? Are you afraid they'll find out what you told me?””

“Enough.””

“You said Marcus was a temporary arrangement. You said once the money came through, we'd disappear.””

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Be careful.””

Vanessa recoiled.

And suddenly, I understood that the woman who had treated me with such cruelty had also been living in fear of the man who had used her.

That didn't excuse what she had done.

But it explained the panic in her eyes.

Marcus stood motionless.

“You planned to leave with her?””

Daniel straightened his jacket.

“I don't owe you an explanation about my private life.””

“You were my business partner.””

“And I remain your business partner until our contracts say otherwise.””

Marcus's face darkened.

“Not anymore.””

Daniel smiled faintly.

“You can't simply dissolve a partnership because you're upset.””

“I'm not upset. I'm finished.””

Daniel opened his briefcase and removed a thick folder.

“Then you should look at this before making threats.””

He placed the folder on the table.

Marcus didn't touch it.

“What is it?””

“The preliminary agreement for the inheritance transfer. Your signature was required by tomorrow morning.””

“And if I refuse?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Then the investment opportunity expires.””

“Good.””

Daniel's smile disappeared.

“You're making a mistake.””

“Perhaps. But at least it will be my mistake.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“You have no idea how much money is involved.””

Marcus looked at the folder.

“How much?””

“Enough to change your life.””

“I'm already living with the consequences of trusting you.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

Then he turned toward me.

“Aaliyah, perhaps you can help Marcus think rationally.””

I stiffened.

“Don't speak to me.””

“I'm offering a reasonable solution.””

“You offered me nothing when your mistress struck me.””

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

“She shouldn't have done that.””

The casualness of his response made my skin crawl.

Marcus stepped between us.

“Don't address my wife.””

Daniel raised both hands.

“Your wife? I thought you were ending the marriage.””

Marcus looked as though he had been slapped.

For one moment, I saw the truth land in his face.

Daniel knew about our marital problems.

He had known enough to exploit them.

And Marcus had given him every reason to believe that I could be discarded without consequence.

“I was wrong,” Marcus said quietly.

Daniel shrugged.

“Then perhaps you should apologize to her and get back to business.””

I stared at my husband.

He looked at me, but I turned away.

An apology offered because it might restore his financial arrangements was not what I needed.

Rebecca interrupted the silence.

“I think we should establish exactly what everyone has agreed to, and what remains disputed. Daniel, did you tell Vanessa that the inheritance transfer would be conditional on Marcus believing her unborn child was his?””

Daniel's expression changed.

“That's absurd.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You told me he would protect me once he believed the baby was his!””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“I told you Marcus was generous.””

“You said he'd never risk abandoning his own child!””

“That's enough.””

“No!”” Vanessa screamed.

“You told me everything would be fine! You said the baby would secure our future!””

Marcus closed his eyes.

I watched him struggle to absorb the full extent of what had happened.

Daniel had apparently used Vanessa to get close to him. Vanessa had used Marcus to gain security. And Marcus had betrayed his pregnant wife while believing he was building a new future with someone who had been manipulating him.

The irony was almost unbearable.

Then Daniel did something that changed the room.

He turned toward Vanessa and spoke in a voice so cold it barely sounded human.

“You should remember that your own situation isn't exactly clean.””

Vanessa froze.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel opened a second folder.

He removed a printed document and placed it on the table.

Marcus picked it up.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“What's this?””

She stared at the document.

For the first time, her face showed something worse than fear.

Recognition.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

“You said you destroyed that.””

He smiled without warmth.

“I keep copies of important things.””

Marcus read the heading aloud.

“Hospital registration and paternity acknowledgment.””

He looked up.

“What am I looking at?””

Vanessa began shaking her head.

“Don't read it.””

Marcus lowered his gaze to the page.

The document contained the name of a man listed as the biological father of Vanessa's unborn child.

It wasn't Marcus.

It wasn't Daniel.

It was someone else entirely.

Someone whose name I recognized from the photograph Evelyn had shown us.

Someone who had been connected to the family long before Vanessa entered our home.

Marcus whispered the name.

“Thomas Reed?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Evelyn went rigid.

I looked from one face to another.

“Who is Thomas Reed?””

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn slowly sat down.

“Thomas,” she whispered, “is Vanessa's husband.””

The silence that followed was absolute.

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“You're married?””

She began crying.

“Marcus, I was going to tell you.””

He shook his head.

“You told me your divorce had been finalized.””

“It was complicated.””

“You told me you were single!””

“I thought I could leave him!””

“Then why is his name on this document?””

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

He smiled.

“Because your mistress has been lying to you from the beginning.””

Marcus took a step backward.

His hand closed around the edge of the coffee table.

He had believed Vanessa was carrying his child.

He had believed she was free to build a life with him.

He had believed Daniel was merely a trusted partner offering sound financial advice.

Now every one of those beliefs had collapsed.

But Daniel wasn't finished.

He removed another page from his folder and slid it across the table.

“This is the part you really need to understand, Marcus.””

Marcus stared at the page.

“What is it?””

“Your father's final estate directive.””

Evelyn rose so abruptly that her chair scraped across the floor.

“Daniel, don't.””

He ignored her.

“Your father included a condition in his estate plan. If you attempted to transfer the inheritance through a fraudulent or undisclosed financial arrangement, the distribution could be delayed pending legal review.””

Marcus looked at the document.

Then he looked at the signature.

His father's signature.

Daniel tapped the page.

“Someone has already submitted a request to transfer the assets. If your attorney discovers the forged authorization, your inheritance could be frozen for months.””

Marcus's face went pale.

“Who submitted it?””

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

She began sobbing.

But before she could speak, Daniel answered.

“Your mother.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Marcus stared at her.

“Mom?””

She shook her head frantically.

“No. I never submitted anything.””

Daniel placed a final document on the table.

“Then you won't mind explaining why the request bears your signature.””

Marcus reached for the paper.

His mother's name was clearly printed at the bottom.

Beneath it was a date from the previous week.

And beside the signature was a handwritten note.

*Transfer authorization received. Proceed before Marcus becomes suspicious.*

Marcus looked up at his mother.

Evelyn's lips trembled.

“I didn't write that.””

Daniel closed his briefcase.

“Then someone has been using your name.””

He glanced toward the front door.

“Unfortunately, the bank won't care about your family drama. They'll care about the paperwork.””

And as Daniel prepared to leave, Rebecca quietly took out her phone.

“I need to make one call,” she said.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Who are you calling?””

She met his gaze.

“The person who can verify whether this authorization was ever received.””

For the first time that evening, Daniel looked genuinely afraid.

Because Rebecca wasn't calling another lawyer.

May you like

She was calling the bank's fraud department.

And whatever they discovered could determine whether Marcus lost his inheritance—or whether Daniel finally lost control of the entire scheme.
