Thinking

Chapter 3: The Envelope That Destroyed Everything

Vanessa clutched her handbag against her chest.

“No,” she whispered.

Marcus stood in front of her, his face pale and his breathing uneven.

“Give me the envelope.””

“It's private.””

“Private?”” He laughed bitterly.

“You've been sleeping with my business partner, lying about your pregnancy, and stealing my family's possessions. What exactly do you have left that's private?””

Vanessa glanced at me.

For one strange moment, I thought she might ask me for help.

She had spent the past several minutes watching her carefully constructed world collapse, and perhaps she finally understood that Marcus was no longer willing to protect her.

But when she spoke, she chose another weapon.

“Aaliyah, tell him to stop.””

I stared at her.

“You hit me.””

“I apologized!””

“No, you didn't.””

“Please! I'm pregnant!””

The words silenced the room.

Vanessa pressed a hand against her stomach, her eyes wide and desperate.

“I have a baby to think about.””

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I glanced down at my own belly.

For seven months, I had imagined what it would feel like to hold my daughter for the first time. I had pictured her tiny fingers wrapping around mine. I had spent hours choosing a name, sorting clothes, and wondering whether she would inherit Marcus's dark eyes or my mother's smile.

Vanessa was carrying a child too.

But she had used that child as a bargaining chip, according to Evelyn's account of the conversation.

And she had stood in front of me, smiling, while Marcus treated our marriage like an inconvenience.

“Your baby deserves a better beginning than this,” I said quietly.

“So does mine.””

Vanessa's expression twisted.

“You think you're better than me?””

“No. I think our children deserve adults who don't turn them into weapons.””

Marcus reached for the handbag.

Vanessa jerked it away.

“Don't touch me!””

He stopped.

Then he looked at her with an expression I had never seen before.

“You're right,” he said.

“I shouldn't touch you.””

He held out his hand.

“Put the bag on the table.””

She hesitated.

“Marcus—”

“Now.””

Something in his voice finally made her obey.

She dropped the bag onto the coffee table.

The envelope slid halfway out.

Marcus pulled it free.

For a second, he simply stared at his name written in Daniel's familiar handwriting.

Then he tore it open.

Inside were three documents, a folded bank statement, and a small flash drive.

He lifted the first page.

His eyes moved across the lines.

Then he stopped.

“What is this?””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Read it aloud.””

Marcus shook his head.

“It's a private agreement.””

“Then tell us why your name is on it.””

He looked at Vanessa.

She was crying again, but her eyes kept moving toward the documents.

Marcus began to read.

“Payment agreement between Daniel Whitmore and Vanessa Reed…”

He swallowed.

“Amount: fifty thousand dollars. Purpose: residential access and cooperation regarding the proposed transfer of funds.””

My stomach tightened.

“Residential access?”” I repeated.

Marcus continued, his voice growing quieter.

“Additional payment upon successful completion of the inheritance transfer.””

He lowered the paper.

“What does this mean?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“It's not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it means!””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Daniel said the investment was legitimate. He told me he needed someone he could trust to help you understand the opportunity.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You were paid to get me to invest my inheritance?””

“It wasn't like that at first.””

“At first?””

She pressed both hands to her stomach.

“I met Daniel before I met you. He told me he was working on a business opportunity. He said you were difficult to convince, that you didn't trust people easily.””

“So he sent you to me?””

“No!””

“Then why does this agreement say he paid you for residential access?””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus dropped the document onto the table.

“You came into my life because he wanted access to my money.””

She began shaking her head.

“I fell in love with you.””

He gave a bitter smile.

“You moved into my house under a false story, lied about your relationship with Daniel, and helped him target my inheritance. And you expect me to believe you fell in love with me?””

“I did!””

“Then why are you still carrying his child?””

The room went silent.

Vanessa's mouth trembled.

She looked down at the floor.

Marcus picked up the bank statement.

Several transfers were listed, each bearing Daniel's name and Vanessa's account number.

The amounts were large enough to make my head spin.

Marcus flipped to the final page.

There was a transfer dated just four days earlier.

Twenty-five thousand dollars.

The memo line contained a short phrase.

*Final preparation.*

Marcus stared at it.

“Preparation for what?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Evelyn took the bank statement from his hand and studied it.

“Marcus, look at the account number.””

He leaned closer.

“That's not Vanessa's personal account.””

“How do you know?”” I asked.

Evelyn pointed to the last four digits.

“Because I saw this account number on a document Daniel sent to your father years ago. It's connected to the investment company.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Daniel told me that account was closed.””

“Apparently, it wasn't.””

Evelyn turned the page over.

At the bottom was a signature.

Marcus's signature.

Or something designed to look like it.

He stared at it for a long time.

“I didn't sign this.””

Vanessa's face went completely still.

Marcus looked up.

“I never signed this.””

She swallowed.

“Daniel said it was only a preliminary authorization.””

“For what?””

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie to me!””

The shout made me flinch.

Marcus immediately looked toward me, and for the first time that evening, he seemed to notice how exhausted I was.

I had been standing for nearly an hour, my back aching and my cheek swollen.

He took a step toward me.

“Aaliyah—”

“Don't.””

He stopped.

I didn't raise my voice.

I didn't need to.

“Please don't come near me.””

His face crumpled slightly.

“I know I hurt you.””

“You let her hit me.””

“I know.””

“You didn't ask if our daughter was okay.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“You told me our marriage was over while I was standing beside broken glass.””

His lips parted, but no answer came.

I pressed a hand to my stomach.

“I don't need you to tell me you're sorry right now, Marcus. I need you to understand that the man I trusted to protect me became the person I had to protect myself from.””

He looked as though he wanted to reach for me.

But he remained where he was.

For once, he didn't ask me to make his guilt easier to bear.

Evelyn quietly moved a chair behind me.

“Sit down, sweetheart.””

I lowered myself carefully into it.

She brought me a glass of water and knelt beside me.

“Are you feeling any pain?””

“My back hurts,” I admitted.

“And I'm frightened.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know. We'll get you checked by your doctor.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“I'm coming with you.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

“Aaliyah, please.””

“No,” I repeated.

“You can call the doctor if I decide you need to know anything. But you're not going to use your role as the baby's father to force your way back into my life.””

He stood motionless.

Evelyn squeezed my hand.

Then a sharp electronic sound came from the coffee table.

The flash drive.

Marcus had placed it beside the documents, and his phone had just connected to a notification from the laptop upstairs.

He stared at the device.

“What is this supposed to contain?””

Vanessa lunged toward the table.

“Don't open it!””

Marcus caught the envelope before she could grab it.

“Why?””

“Because it has nothing to do with you!””

He gave a cold laugh.

“It's in an envelope addressed to me, attached to a payment agreement involving my money. You can explain that statement to a lawyer.””

Vanessa's eyes darted toward the hallway.

Evelyn noticed.

“Marcus, don't use your personal laptop. If this is connected to a financial scheme, let an attorney or qualified investigator examine it.””

He nodded, still staring at the flash drive.

Then he turned back to Vanessa.

“Tell me what is on it.””

She wiped her nose with a trembling hand.

“Messages.””

“Between whom?””

“Daniel and me.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“What kind of messages?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

He looked at the envelope again.

Then he picked up the last document.

It was a printed email chain.

The first message was from Daniel.

The subject line read:

*Phase Two: The Pregnancy.*

Marcus's face went blank.

He read the first few lines silently.

Then he began to shake.

“What does this mean?”” he whispered.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Marcus, please.””

He looked at her.

“Did Daniel know you were going to tell me the baby was mine?””

She remained silent.

“Did he know?””

Her shoulders began to tremble.

“Yes.””

Marcus staggered backward.

The betrayal was no longer something he could explain away as a complicated affair. The documents suggested that his relationship with Vanessa had been part of a deliberate plan, one designed to reach his inheritance through a woman he believed loved him.

And the pregnancy had apparently been discussed as part of that plan.

I looked at the email again.

There was a line beneath Daniel's message, written in bold.

*Once Marcus believes the child is his, he will sign anything to protect his new family.*

Marcus lowered the paper.

For a moment, he looked directly at me.

I saw the realization settle into his face.

He had believed Vanessa's pregnancy made him responsible for protecting her.

He had used that belief to justify abandoning me.

Now the very thing he had used against me might have been the foundation of a lie.

But Evelyn wasn't finished.

She took the final page from the table and read it carefully.

Then her expression changed.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

Evelyn looked at him, her eyes full of dread.

“There's a date here.””

“What date?””

“The date Daniel planned to have the inheritance transfer completed.””

Marcus glanced at the document.

His face drained of color.

The date was tomorrow.

And beneath it, in Daniel's handwriting, was a final instruction:

*If Marcus refuses to sign, tell him the baby may not survive without his financial support.*

Vanessa began sobbing uncontrollably.

Marcus stared at her, horrified.

“You were going to tell me your baby was in danger unless I gave you the money?””

She shook her head.

“I never wanted it to go this far.””

“But you knew about the plan.””

“I was scared!””

“Of what?””

She looked at him, tears streaming down her face.

“Daniel said if I didn't cooperate, he'd expose everything.””

“Expose what?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then she looked toward Evelyn.

Something like hatred flashed across her face.

“Your mother knows,” she whispered.

Marcus turned toward Evelyn.

“Mom?””

Evelyn's hand tightened around the document.

For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely afraid.

“Vanessa,” she said quietly, “don't you dare.””

But Vanessa had already taken a breath.

“Ask your mother why Daniel Whitmore has been sending her money for the last six months.””

Marcus stared at Evelyn.

The room became so quiet that I could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Evelyn's lips parted.

May you like

No words came.

And in that silence, Marcus realized that the woman who had exposed his mistress might be hiding a secret of her own.
