Chapter 4: The Secret His Mother Buried
“Mom, tell me she's lying.””
Marcus's voice sounded nothing like the confident man who had stood beside Vanessa moments earlier. It was thin, almost childlike, and filled with a fear that had nothing to do with his mistress or the unborn child she carried.
Evelyn stood beside the coffee table, clutching the document so tightly that its edges curled beneath her fingers.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Vanessa wiped her cheeks and straightened her blouse. The tears disappeared from her face almost as quickly as they had come.
“Go on, Evelyn,” she said.
“Tell him how innocent you are.””
“Be quiet,” Evelyn replied.
“Why? You're the one who taught me that family secrets are worth protecting.””
Marcus turned sharply toward his mother.
“What money?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Marcus, please sit down.””
“No.”” He pointed toward the papers scattered across the table.
“You told me Vanessa was manipulating me. You showed me those documents. You accused her of conspiring with Daniel. Now she's saying you've been taking money from him.””
“It's not that simple.””
“Then make it simple!””
His shout startled me so badly that my daughter kicked beneath my ribs.
I pressed a hand against my belly.
Evelyn noticed immediately.
“Are you all right, sweetheart?””
“Please don't change the subject,” I said.
She looked at me, and the guilt in her eyes made my stomach tighten.
I had trusted Evelyn.
When my own mother died five years earlier, Evelyn had taken me into her kitchen, wrapped her arms around me, and promised that I would never have to face another family crisis alone.
She had attended every baby shower planning meeting. She had knitted a pale pink blanket for her granddaughter. She had even spent an entire Saturday helping me choose curtains for the nursery.
Now she stood in the same house, holding evidence of a secret that apparently stretched back months.
“Evelyn,” I said quietly, “what is Vanessa talking about?””
The older woman lowered herself into the armchair.
“Six months ago, Daniel approached me with a business proposal.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Of course he did.””
“He said he had discovered a way to protect your father's estate from unnecessary taxes. He claimed the family could save a considerable amount of money by restructuring certain assets.””
“And you believed him?””
“I had no reason to suspect anything.””
“You've known Daniel for twelve years!””
“And I believed he was your friend!””
Marcus struck the coffee table with his palm.
The documents jumped.
“Then why was he paying you?””
Evelyn flinched.
“Because I borrowed money from him.””
The words seemed to drain the air from the room.
I stared at her.
“Borrowed?””
She nodded.
“After your father died, there were expenses I hadn't anticipated. The estate took longer to settle than anyone expected. I had outstanding medical bills, property taxes, and debts I was too ashamed to discuss with you.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You could have asked me.””
“I know.””
“I would have helped you.””
“I know that too.””
“Then why Daniel?””
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I didn't want you to think I was incapable of managing my own life.””
Marcus looked away.
For the first time since the confrontation began, his anger appeared to weaken beneath something more complicated.
But then Evelyn continued.
“Daniel offered me a private loan. He said I could repay it after the estate matters were settled. I accepted.””
“How much?””
She hesitated.
“How much, Mom?””
“Eighty thousand dollars.””
Marcus took a step backward.
“Eighty thousand?””
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like you've handed my business partner a weapon he can use against you!””
Evelyn's face crumpled.
“I thought I could repay him. Then he began asking questions about your inheritance. He wanted to know when you would receive the final distribution, whether the money would remain in your personal accounts, and whether you planned to invest any of it.””
Marcus stared at her.
“And you told him?””
“Only what I thought was harmless.””
“What did you tell him?””
“That you were expecting the inheritance within the year. That you had been considering investments. That you and Aaliyah were preparing for the baby.””
My heart sank.
She had told Daniel about our child.
About our plans.
About the very things he apparently intended to exploit.
Evelyn pressed a hand to her mouth.
“I didn't know what he was planning. I swear to you, I didn't.””
Vanessa laughed from beside the fireplace.
“Oh, please. You knew enough to keep taking his calls.””
Evelyn turned toward her.
“And you knew enough to take his money.””
Vanessa's smile vanished.
Marcus lifted both hands.
“Stop. Both of you.””
He looked at his mother.
“Did Daniel threaten you?””
Evelyn hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Marcus's expression hardened.
“What did he threaten to do?””
“He said if I failed to cooperate with his financial restructuring, he would demand immediate repayment. He also said he could make things difficult for me legally.””
“By doing what?””
“Claiming I had misrepresented my finances when I borrowed the money.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Did you?””
“No. I disclosed everything he asked me to disclose. But he has more resources than I do, and he knows how expensive a legal fight can become.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then I noticed something.
Evelyn had said Daniel approached her six months ago.
Vanessa had claimed to have known Daniel before meeting Marcus.
And the pregnancy was apparently part of a plan to influence Marcus's financial decisions.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did Daniel tell you to get pregnant?””
Her face twisted.
“That's none of your business.””
“You made it my business when you moved into my house and struck me while I was carrying my child.””
She glanced at Marcus.
He didn't intervene.
For the first time, she was standing alone.
Vanessa swallowed.
“Daniel didn't tell me to get pregnant.””
“Then what did he tell you?””
She stared at the floor.
“He told me Marcus wanted a family. He said Marcus was lonely, that his marriage was falling apart, and that I could give him something he wasn't getting at home.””
I felt as though someone had poured ice water down my spine.
She had been listening to Daniel describe my marriage before she ever met my husband.
“What did Daniel promise you?”” I asked.
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“Security.””
“Financial security?””
She didn't answer.
Marcus gave a bitter laugh.
“So the baby was a coincidence?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let me believe it was mine?””
“Because I thought you loved me!””
The words burst from her so violently that she startled herself.
Marcus stared at her.
“You knew I believed the baby was mine.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
“Eventually!””
He shook his head.
“That isn't an answer.””
Vanessa looked around the room, searching for someone who might rescue her.
She found no one.
Finally, she whispered, “Daniel told me that if I admitted the truth, he'd destroy me.””
Marcus went still.
“Why would he destroy you?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because he has something on me.””
“What?””
She didn't answer.
Marcus turned toward the coffee table and picked up the flash drive.
Evelyn immediately stepped forward.
“Don't plug that into your computer. We need a lawyer to examine it safely.””
Marcus stared at the device.
“I'm done listening to people tell me what I can and can't know.””
He reached for his phone instead.
“I'll call my attorney.””
Vanessa's face changed.
“No.””
He looked up.
“What?””
“Please don't involve lawyers.””
“Why not?””
“Because Daniel will find out.””
Marcus's mouth tightened.
“Good.””
“You don't understand what he's capable of!””
“Then explain it to me.””
Vanessa shook her head frantically.
“You'll lose everything.””
Marcus stared at her for a long moment.
Then he spoke with chilling calm.
“Apparently, I've already lost my wife.””
His eyes moved toward me.
I looked away.
He had finally recognized the damage he had caused, but recognition was not redemption. A single expression of regret could not undo months of lies or the moment he had watched another woman strike me.
I stood carefully, using the arm of the chair for support.
Evelyn rose immediately.
“Where are you going?””
“To pack a bag.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Aaliyah, please. We need to talk.””
“We needed to talk before you brought Vanessa into our home.””
“I made a terrible mistake.””
“You made hundreds of choices.””
He stopped.
I walked toward the stairs.
Every step made my back ache, and my cheek still burned, but I refused to let anyone see me collapse.
When I reached the bottom stair, Evelyn called after me.
“Aaliyah, wait.””
I turned.
She held out her phone.
“There's something else you should know.””
My stomach tightened.
“What now?””
Evelyn glanced at Marcus, then at Vanessa.
“I received a message from Daniel this afternoon. He said he needed to speak to me urgently. He told me that if I didn't help him resolve the inheritance matter tonight, he would come to this house himself.””
Marcus's face went pale.
“He threatened to come here?””
Evelyn nodded.
“He said the matter involved more than money.””
Vanessa began shaking her head.
“No. He wouldn't.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why not?””
She didn't answer.
Then the doorbell rang.
Once.
Twice.
The sound echoed through the house.
Evelyn looked toward the entrance.
Marcus slowly turned his head.
And from the other side of the front door, a familiar male voice called out.
“Evelyn? I know you're in there.””
May you like
Daniel Whitmore had arrived.
And he wasn't alone.
