Chapter 2: The Secret Behind Vanessa's Smile
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The words seemed to hang above us, too terrible and too strange to belong in the same room as the broken vase and the tiny baby clothes visible through the open nursery door.
Marcus stared at his mother.
“What did you just say?””
Evelyn didn't blink.
“You heard me.””
Vanessa let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
“This is ridiculous.””
But her voice had changed.
The smug confidence was gone. Her fingers trembled around the strap of her handbag, and she glanced toward the front door as though calculating how quickly she could reach it.
Marcus noticed.
He turned to her slowly.
“Vanessa?””
She shook her head.
“Your mother has never liked me. She's been trying to ruin this relationship since the beginning.””
Evelyn gave a bitter smile.
“Is that what you told yourself when you started sneaking into this house through the side entrance?””
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I looked at Evelyn.
“What are you talking about?””
She turned toward me, and for the first time that evening, her expression softened.
“I'm sorry, Aaliyah. I should have told you sooner.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Stop speaking in riddles. What do you mean the baby isn't mine?””
Evelyn drew a shaky breath.
“Ask Vanessa who the father is.””
Marcus faced his mistress.
“Who is the father?””
Vanessa stared at the floor.
“Marcus, please. Let's talk privately.””
“No.””
His voice cracked through the room.
“You had no problem discussing our relationship in front of my wife. You had no problem humiliating her in her own home. So answer the question.””
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“You're letting your mother manipulate you.””
“Who is the father?””
She remained silent.
Marcus took a step toward her.
“Look at me.””
She did, and what he saw seemed to frighten him more than any confession could have.
Because Vanessa wasn't looking at him with love.
She was looking at him with the desperate calculation of someone whose carefully constructed lie was falling apart.
Evelyn reached into the pocket of her cardigan and removed a folded sheet of paper.
“I didn't want to believe it myself,” she said.
“But I had to know.””
Marcus stared at the paper.
“What is that?””
“A copy of a message I found on the family tablet.””
Vanessa lunged forward.
“Give me that!””
Evelyn stepped back.
“Don't you dare touch me.””
The older woman's voice was quiet, but there was steel beneath it.
Vanessa froze.
Evelyn unfolded the paper and adjusted her glasses.
“Three weeks ago, I came downstairs to get a glass of water. Vanessa was in the kitchen, talking on the phone. She didn't know I was standing in the hallway.””
Marcus's face tightened.
“What did you hear?””
“She said, 'Once Marcus signs the papers, everything will be settled. He'll never suspect a thing.''”
Vanessa shook her head violently.
“That could mean anything!””
Evelyn continued.
“Then she said, 'The baby is just insurance. He'll do whatever I want once he believes it's his.''”
A terrible silence followed.
I pressed a hand against my stomach.
The baby inside me shifted gently, reminding me that even as the world around me collapsed, my daughter was still there.
Marcus looked as though someone had struck him.
“Insurance?”” he whispered.
Vanessa moved closer to him.
“Marcus, you have to understand. I was upset that night. I was talking about something else.””
“What papers?””
She said nothing.
“What papers, Vanessa?””
Her eyes flicked toward the hallway.
Evelyn answered for her.
“The papers transferring part of your inheritance into the investment company she recommended.””
Marcus went completely still.
I knew about that company.
For months, he had talked about an opportunity that could supposedly double his money within a year. He had spent evenings at the dining table studying spreadsheets and had asked me to review several documents.
I had refused to sign anything without an independent attorney.
Marcus had accused me of being unnecessarily suspicious.
Vanessa had called me controlling.
Now I understood why.
“Marcus,” I whispered, “you told me that investment was approved by your financial adviser.””
“It was supposed to be,” he murmured.
Evelyn shook her head.
“Your adviser never approved it. I called his office yesterday after I saw a transfer request in the mail.””
Marcus turned toward his mother.
“You went through my documents?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“That's private!””
“And what Vanessa has been doing isn't?””
He had no answer.
Vanessa suddenly began to cry.
It was a remarkable transformation.
A moment earlier, she had stood beside Marcus like a queen surveying property she believed she owned. Now tears ran down her cheeks, and she clutched his sleeve with both hands.
“Marcus, I made mistakes,” she whispered.
“But I love you.””
He looked at her hand as though it belonged to a stranger.
“Then tell me who the father is.””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“I can't.””
“Can't or won't?””
She covered her face.
“Please don't do this to me.””
I let out a broken laugh.
“You struck me across the face while I was pregnant, and now you're asking him not to do this to you?””
Vanessa glared at me through her tears.
“You don't know anything about us.””
“I know you moved into my home.””
“You know nothing!””
“I know you stole the earrings my husband bought for me to give you. I know you slept in the room where I prepared for my mother to help me after childbirth. I know you watched him abandon me while I stood here afraid for our daughter.””
My voice grew stronger with every sentence.
“And I know you hit me.””
Vanessa's expression hardened again.
“You provoked me.””
Marcus looked up sharply.
“Enough.””
She turned toward him.
“Marcus—”
“I said enough!””
For the first time that evening, his anger was directed at her.
It should have felt satisfying.
Instead, I felt strangely empty.
His outrage couldn't erase the moment he had rushed to comfort Vanessa while I stood beside shattered glass, protecting our unborn child.
Evelyn placed the paper on the coffee table.
“There's more.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Mom, please.””
“No. You've spent months believing whatever this woman tells you. You're going to hear everything now.””
She reached into her handbag and removed a second item.
A photograph.
She laid it beside the paper.
It showed Vanessa standing outside a restaurant with a tall man in a charcoal suit. He had one hand on her lower back, and she was smiling up at him.
I recognized him immediately.
The man from the photograph I had seen on the side table.
The man Marcus had introduced to me at a charity dinner six months earlier.
Daniel Whitmore.
Marcus's business partner.
The man who had helped him establish the investment company.
The man who had stood beside Marcus at our wedding and toasted our future.
Marcus picked up the photograph.
His hand began to shake.
“No,” he whispered.
Vanessa rushed toward him.
“Marcus, I can explain!””
He raised the photograph.
“Is this Daniel?””
She said nothing.
“Is Daniel the father of your baby?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Marcus, I never meant for any of this to happen.””
He stared at her.
“Answer me!””
Vanessa's shoulders collapsed.
“I didn't know how to tell you.””
Marcus stumbled backward until his legs hit the sofa.
“You've been sleeping with my business partner?””
She began to sob.
“It wasn't supposed to become serious.””
“When?””
“Marcus—”
“When?””
She looked down.
“Before I met you.””
He stared at her in disbelief.
Then Evelyn spoke again.
“No, Marcus. It didn't end when she met you.””
She pulled another sheet of paper from her handbag.
“This is a copy of a hotel receipt I found in the envelope Daniel left at my house by mistake. The date is from two weeks ago.””
Marcus looked at the receipt.
The hotel was downtown.
The same hotel where he had attended a business conference that weekend.
The same weekend Vanessa had told him she was visiting her sick aunt.
His face drained of color.
“You were with Daniel while I was at that conference?””
Vanessa pressed her hands together.
“I can explain.””
“You were with him while I was in the same hotel?””
She shook her head, crying harder.
“I didn't know you were staying there!””
Marcus gave a short, hollow laugh.
“So that's your defense?””
He looked at his mother, then at me, then back at Vanessa.
The woman he had risked his marriage for.
The woman he had defended after she struck his pregnant wife.
The woman he had trusted with his money, his secrets, and his future.
“How long have you been lying to me?”” he asked.
Vanessa couldn't answer.
And suddenly, I understood something that frightened me more than her affair.
She had not simply wanted Marcus.
She had wanted something from him.
Something that involved his inheritance, his business, and a baby she had allowed him to believe was his.
I looked at the photograph again.
Daniel Whitmore's hand rested possessively on Vanessa's waist.
But there was another detail in the picture.
A gold bracelet on Vanessa's wrist.
I had seen that bracelet before.
It had belonged to Marcus's late father.
After his death, the family had searched everywhere for it, believing it had been misplaced during the funeral.
Marcus had been devastated.
It was the only personal item his father had promised to leave him when he turned thirty-five.
Now it was on Vanessa's wrist.
“Where did you get that bracelet?”” I asked.
Everyone turned toward me.
Vanessa instinctively covered her wrist with her other hand.
Marcus stared at the bracelet.
His voice dropped to a whisper.
“That belonged to my father.””
Vanessa took a step back.
“Marcus, I—”
“Where did you get it?””
She looked toward the front door again.
Evelyn moved in front of it.
“No one is leaving until we understand exactly what has happened.””
Vanessa's tears stopped.
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
Then Marcus noticed the small envelope protruding from her handbag.
His name was written across the front in Daniel's handwriting.
He reached for it.
Vanessa grabbed the bag and pulled it against her chest.
“Don't!””
Marcus froze.
He stared at her.
Then he said the one thing she had clearly not expected.
“Open it.””
She shook her head.
“Marcus, please.””
“Open the envelope, Vanessa.””
Her lips parted, but no words came.
Evelyn stepped beside her son.
“Open it,” she repeated.
“Because whatever is inside that envelope is the reason Daniel has been paying you to stay in this house.””
May you like
Vanessa's face turned white.
And Marcus, finally understanding that the betrayal was far bigger than an affair, reached for the bag again.
