Chapter 8 - THE REVERSAL

Morning came gray and cold.
I woke early and checked on Noah. He was still sleeping peacefully, one hand curled beneath his cheek. Liam sat in the armchair beside the bed, fully awake, watching our son with an expression I could not quite read.
When he saw me, he stood up quietly.
"I called an old friend," Liam said, stepping into the hallway. "A lawyer. He is reviewing everything we have. He said... the situation looks very bad."
"Tell me the truth," I said.
Liam took a breath.
"Victor's claim is solid according to the papers we have. The trust is void. The property reverts to the nearest blood relative. And according to law... Victor is exactly that."
"So we lose everything?"
"Not necessarily," Liam said. "If we can prove the condition was written under false pretenses. Or if we can find a later document that cancels it. Your father wrote that letter to you—the one we found. If he wrote one, he may have written another that changes the terms. But we need to find it."
"And if we don't?"
Liam looked at me, his eyes serious.
"Then Noah loses the house. And Victor walks away with millions."
I sat down heavily on the bed.
"My father did this," I said, my voice hollow. "He wrote the very condition that would take everything away from his own grandson."
"He wrote it to keep me away," Liam said. "He believed I was dangerous. He believed sending me away would keep you safe. He never imagined Victor would surface. He never imagined I would return."
"He made a deal with Daniel," I said. "He paid Margaret. He built a whole life on lies. And then he left us with a puzzle that could destroy us."
"We finish what he started," Liam said. "We find the truth. And we fix what he broke."
Later that morning, I called Daniel.
He answered on the first ring.
"Emily—please, listen to me—"
"Where are you?" I asked.
"At the apartment. Margaret is here. Victor... he left early this morning. He went to the mansion to begin inventory. Emily, I tried to stop him. I tried to tell him there must be another way. But he has the law on his side."
"Did you know about the condition?" I asked.
Daniel hesitated.
"Daniel!"
"I knew something was written into the trust," he admitted. "But not exactly what. Your father told me only that if certain facts changed, the ownership changed too. He never told me about the clause specifically. And he never told me about Victor."
"And Margaret?"
"She knew," Daniel said, his voice sounding broken. "She knew everything. She made a deal with Victor behind my back. Promised him half in exchange for helping her remove us from the house. She used this to destroy Noah's claim from the very beginning."
My heart sank. All those times she had made Noah feel unwelcome. All those cruel words. She had been preparing the way for Victor all along.
"Daniel," I said. "I need you to do something for me."
"Anything," he said instantly. "Just tell me what. I will fix this if it takes everything I have."
"Go back to the mansion," I said. "Pretend you are still on their side. Help Victor. Gain his trust. And while you are there... look for anything my father might have hidden. A safe. A box. A second letter. Anything."
"I will do it," Daniel said. "Emily... I am so sorry. For everything. For Noah. For us. I let fear make me weak. But I will not be weak anymore."
"Then prove it," I said. "Find the clues. And help us take back what belongs to our son."
"I will," he promised.
I hung up and turned to find Liam standing in the doorway. He had heard every word.
"You trust him?" Liam asked.
"I trust that he loves Noah," I said. "And I trust that he hates what his mother has done. That will have to be enough."
Liam nodded slowly.

"Then we watch. And we wait. And we hope... that this time, Daniel chooses the right side."
