Chapter 5 - THE SECRET IN THE WILL

The air in the room turned cold.

Liam stood up, still holding Noah tight against his chest. He shielded our son with his body, stepping closer to me.

"What do you mean?" Liam asked Margaret.

Margaret folded her hands in front of her, her expression calm and terrifying.

"Your father's letter told part of the truth, Emily," she said. "But he did not tell you everything. He was protecting himself, too."

She walked slowly to the coffee table and picked up the deed. She ran a finger over the signatures.

"This house belongs to Noah's trust," she said. "That part is true. But there is a condition. A condition your father wrote into the fine print. One that makes all of this... rather complicated."

I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. "What condition?"

Margaret looked straight at Liam.

"The trust and the property transfer fully to Noah only if his father is dead."

Silence swallowed the room.

I stared at her. "That cannot be true."

"Read the fine print," Margaret said. "Page seven. Paragraph four. Your father wrote it himself. If Noah's biological father is found to be alive, the trust dissolves. The property reverts to whoever is next of kin."

I snatched the papers from the table. My hands shook as I flipped to page seven. I scanned the words. And then my heart sank.

It was there. Plain as day.

*If the biological father is living at the time of Noah's majority or discovered prior thereto, this trust shall be void and all assets shall pass to the nearest surviving blood relative of the grantor.*

My blood ran cold.

"Nearest surviving blood relative..." I whispered.

Margaret smiled.

"Your father was an only child, Emily. His parents are gone. His wife is gone. The only blood relative left... is you."

I looked up, confused. "So it reverts to me?"

Margaret shook her head slowly.

"Read it again, Emily. Blood relative of the grantor, excluding spouse and descendant. Noah is a descendant. You are his spouse by marriage—you are not blood. Which means..."

She paused, letting the horror settle in.

"There is no one."

I frowned. "Then what happens?"

"The estate goes into probate," Margaret said, her voice dripping with satisfaction. "It becomes property of the state after a period of time. Unless... someone else can prove a stronger claim."

"And who would that be?" Liam asked, his voice tight.

Margaret turned her gaze to him.

"Your father had a brother no one knew about," she said to me. "A brother he cut off from the family years ago. But blood is blood. And that brother... is still alive."

"Who?" I demanded.

Margaret laughed softly.

"You really have no idea, do you? All this time you thought you were so safe. All this time you thought your father protected you."

She leaned forward and whispered the name like a curse.

"His name is Victor. And he has been waiting for your father to die so he could take everything."

I felt the floor tilt beneath me.

"Victor..." I said. "I have never heard that name."

"Your father erased him from every record," Margaret said. "But he could not erase the blood. And now Victor knows. He knows about the trust. He knows about the condition. And he knows Liam is alive."

"How could he know that?" Liam asked sharply.

Margaret gestured toward the door.

"Because he was standing right beside me when Daniel told us you had returned. He has been waiting outside. Watching."

Before anyone could speak, the front gate creaked open. Heavy footsteps approached the porch.

Margaret stepped back, her eyes gleaming.

"Let me introduce you," she said. "To the man who is about to take your home, your fortune, and everything you hold dear."

The door swung open.

A man stood there. He looked enough like my father to make my breath catch—but harder. Sharper. Colder. He stood tall, broad-shouldered, with eyes that swept the room like he was already taking inventory of what belonged to him.

His gaze landed on me. Then on Liam. Then on Noah.

May you like

"Hello, Emily," he said. His voice was deep, rough, and carried a terrifying confidence. "I am Victor. Your uncle. And I believe... you are living in my house."
