Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The cemetery was quiet and still when we arrived.

We walked together down the long, tree-lined path until we reached my mother's grave. It was well-kept, covered with fresh flowers. Even after her death, my father had come here every week.

I knelt down and brushed the leaves from the headstone.

"He always said she was the only one he could trust," I said quietly. "If he wanted to leave me something safe... he would leave it with her."

Liam knelt beside me. He ran his hand along the base of the stone.

"There is something here," he said. "Look."

He pointed to a small, carved rose near the bottom of the marker. It was slightly loose. He pressed it gently. It shifted.

A small compartment opened at the base of the stone. Inside, wrapped carefully in waterproof covering, was a thick envelope.

I pulled it out. My hands trembled as I broke the seal.

It was dated two weeks before his death.

*My dearest Emily,*

*If you are reading this, then the worst has happened. Victor has come. The trust has failed. And the truth I tried so hard to hide has been exposed.*

*I wrote the first condition because I believed Liam was dangerous. I believed keeping them apart was the only way to keep you safe. But I was wrong. I learned too late that the danger came not from Liam, but from my own blood. From Victor. From Margaret. From the lies we tell ourselves to survive.*

*So I write this now. To fix what I broke.*

*Attached is a new will and a revised trust. Dated and signed. It cancels the earlier condition entirely. Noah inherits everything—regardless of who his father is. The house, the money, the business—all of it. For him. And for you. And for the man you love.*

*There is one more thing. The hardest thing to write.*

*Victor told me something before he died. Something that changed everything. He told me that Liam... is my son.*

I stopped reading. The words blurred.

Liam leaned closer. "Emily? What does it say?"

I looked up at him, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"Liam... my father... he was your father too."

Liam went pale. He stumbled back as if he had been struck.

"That is impossible," he whispered.

"My father had a brother... but he also had a son before he married my mother. You. Your mother was the woman he loved before. He left her. And he never told anyone. Not even you."

I looked back at the letter.

*Liam is my son. Your half-brother. And Noah... is both your son and your nephew. Blood of my blood on both sides.*

*That is why I tried to keep you apart. That is why I sent Liam away. I learned the truth too late. And by then... you already loved each other. I could not bear to destroy your happiness. So I destroyed it anyway. With lies. With money. With distance.*

*I am sorry. For everything.*

*But know this—because Liam is my son, he is also a blood heir. Even without this new will, he has a claim. And Noah... carries the blood of both his parents. He is doubly entitled to everything.*

*Use this to take back what is yours. And then... be kind to each other. You are all the family you have left.*

*Your loving father.*

I lowered the letter. I looked at Liam. He stood there, white-faced and trembling, staring at me as though he had never truly seen me before.

"We are..." He could not finish the sentence.

"We are brother and sister," I whispered.

Silence fell between us. Heavy, terrible, and absolute.

Everything we had built. Everything we had dreamed. The love we shared. The life we imagined. All of it... impossible.

Noah was our son. And our nephew.

And we... were brother and sister.

Liam turned away. He gripped the stone wall beside him, his shoulders shaking.

I stood frozen, the letter crumpling in my hand.

My father had hidden this truth to protect us. But in doing so... he had made us fall in love. He had built a family on a foundation of horror.

And now... we had to choose.

Destroy the secret and lose everything. Or keep it hidden... and live in shame forever.
