Chapter 14 - THE ENEMY STRIKES

We refused.

Liam told Victor to leave. Margaret went with him, pale and furious, but Daniel stayed behind. He stood in the hallway, looking at us differently—with suspicion, fear, and profound sadness.

"I will help you," Daniel said quietly to me. "I will file the papers. I will make sure the house is returned. But Emily... whatever is happening here... be careful. Secrets have a way of poisoning everything they touch."

He left me standing there, alone in the hallway, the weight of his words settling heavy on my chest.

For the next two days, we waited. Victor did not return. Margaret did not call. We thought perhaps they had accepted defeat. Perhaps they had moved on.

We were wrong.

It started with whispers. At the grocery store. At the park. People glanced at me, then at Liam, then at Noah. They looked away quickly when I caught their eye.

Then came the messages. Anonymous texts. *We know what you are.* *Shameful.* Monster.

Liam took my hand as we stood in the kitchen, reading them one by one.

"He is doing exactly what he threatened," Liam said. "He is telling everyone. Spreading rumors. Destroying our reputation to force us to pay him to be quiet."

"He has no proof," I said. "Just rumors."

"Rumors are enough," Liam said gravely. "Especially when people see how we look at each other. How close we are. Noah will feel it. He will hear it. And then he will ask questions we cannot answer."

Before I could reply, my phone rang. It was Noah's school.

My heart dropped as I answered.

"Mrs. Hale," the principal said, her voice tight and formal. "We have received several... concerns. Parents are uncomfortable. We need to speak with you about your son's enrollment."

I gripped the counter. "What concerns?"

"Your relationship to the man who brings and picks him up. Questions about Noah's parentage. We cannot allow this kind of controversy to affect our school community."

"It is slander," I said. "My uncle has returned to help me. That is all."

"Then why do people say otherwise?" she asked. "Why has Victor Black already spoken to three board members? He has threatened to go public with everything he claims to know. We cannot afford this scandal."

I ended the call trembling. Victor was not just whispering. He was attacking our lives piece by piece. He wanted to hurt us until we had no choice but to pay him to stop.

"He went to Noah's school," I told Liam, tears stinging my eyes. "He is trying to get him expelled."

Liam's face hardened. The sadness was gone, replaced by cold, steel resolve.

"That ends now," Liam said. "He wants war. We give him war. But we do it on our terms."
