Chapter 17 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

We acted that same night.

Liam, Daniel, and I met in the study. We laid everything out on the table—the will, the trust, the letter, Margaret's note.

"She will file this by morning," Liam said. "Once she does, it becomes public. The investigation begins. Every record will be pulled. Every secret exposed."

"Then we stop her before she files it," Daniel said.

"How?" I asked. "She hates us. She has hated Noah from the day he was born. She will do anything to see us destroyed."

Liam looked at Margaret's note. Then he looked at the date.

"Margaret wrote this to protect herself," Liam said slowly. "She gave a copy to Victor. But she kept one too. As insurance. If we can find her original... and the records she gathered... we can destroy them before anyone sees."

"She keeps her most private things in her apartment," Daniel said. "I know where she hides her safe."

"Then we go," Liam said. "Now."

We drove to Margaret's apartment. Victor was there too—they had moved in together, plotting our ruin. We waited until the lights went out. Until the house was quiet.

Daniel picked the lock. We slipped inside. The apartment was filled with Margaret's things—silk scarves, expensive perfumes, photographs of herself looking proud and powerful.

"The safe is in her closet," Daniel whispered.

We found it. Liam cracked it open. Inside were jewels, old documents, and a thick sealed envelope marked CONFIDENTIAL — ONLY TO BE OPENED UPON MY DEATH OR MY VICTORY.

Liam opened it.

Inside were birth certificates. Baptismal records. Letters. Everything Margaret had gathered. Proof of everything.

"We have it," Liam breathed. "We can burn it all."

But as he lifted the stack, a smaller paper fluttered to the floor.

Daniel picked it up. He read it by the light of his phone.

Then he made a sound—a sharp, choked breath.

"Emily..." Daniel said. His voice was terrifyingly quiet.

I stepped closer. "What is it?"

Daniel turned the paper toward me.

It was a letter from Margaret, written years ago. Dated shortly after Noah was conceived.

*My dearest Daniel,*

*I have found the truth. The dates match perfectly. The child Emily carries was conceived while Liam was still here. But there is something else you must know. I had the doctor run a preliminary test. The blood markers do not lie. This child... cannot be Liam's either.*

I froze. "What?"

Daniel read on, his hands trembling.

*Liam and Emily share the same blood type. Noah does not. He carries markers that match neither of them. Which means... neither of you is his father.*

The room seemed to tilt.

"That is impossible," Liam whispered. "He looks like us."

"He looks like your father," Margaret's letter continued. "Because he carries the blood of the man who raised him. But biologically... Noah belongs to someone else entirely. Someone neither of you knows. And until you find out who... you will never truly own this house. Or this child."

I gripped the edge of the safe. My head spun. All the secrets. All the lies. The tragedy of our forbidden love. The sacrifice. The guilt.

And none of it was real.

Noah was not Liam's son.

He was not my brother's child.

We had destroyed ourselves. We had torn our hearts apart. We had prepared to live in shame and secrecy forever.

And it had all been based on a lie.
