Chapter 12 - THE HARDEST CHOICE I EVER HAD TO MAKE

That night, Liam and I sat at opposite ends of the small table, the documents spread between us like a wall.

"Legally," Liam said quietly, "this solves everything. I am your father's son. That makes me a direct heir. And Noah carries both our blood. Victor has no standing. Margaret has no power. We can take the house back tomorrow."

"But at what cost?" I asked.

"If we reveal this truth... the scandal will destroy Noah. He will grow up knowing exactly how he came to be. That his parents were brother and sister. That our love was forbidden before we ever knew."

I nodded slowly. "Victor and Margaret will use it against us instantly. They will shout it from the rooftops. They will try to take Noah away. They will say we are unfit."

"So we keep it," Liam said. "We keep the secret. We use the will to reclaim the house. We say my father recognized me later in life. That I was always his son, but kept private. That explains my claim without revealing... the rest."

"And us?" I asked. "How do we live? How do we pretend we are not the people we are?"

Liam looked down at his hands. He looked exhausted. Years of separation, then this impossible reunion, then this devastating truth—all in a matter of days.

"I will go," Liam said.

The words hit me like a physical blow.

"No."

"Emily, listen to me," he said, voice breaking. "Noah needs stability. He needs his mother. He needs his home. And he needs a father figure who can be there every day, openly, without shame. Daniel has already offered to make amends. He knows his mistakes. He loves Noah. He is willing to step back into that role—if you will let him."

"You want me to let Daniel be his father?"

"I want our son to be safe, and loved, and never know the darkness that created him," Liam said, tears streaming. "I will be in his life. As his uncle. As his father's brother. I will visit. I will call. I will love him from every side that I am allowed. But I cannot live in that house. Not as your husband. Not as his father. It would destroy all of us."

I stood up, trembling from head to toe.

"You are asking me to choose between the man I love and the life we dreamed of," I said.

"I am asking you to choose our son," Liam said. "That is the only choice that matters."

I looked at the letter. At my father's handwriting. Be kind to each other. You are all the family you have left.

My father had made the same mistake. He had loved someone he should not, hidden the truth, and generations later we were paying the price. I could not let that cycle continue. Not with Noah.

I sank back into the chair, weeping openly.

"When will you leave?"

"After we take back the house," Liam said. "After Noah is safe. After Victor and Margaret are gone."

May you like

I nodded. There was no other way. Not really.
