Chapter 4 - QUESTIONS FROM THE PAST

I stared at that photograph until my eyes burned.

Elena. My Elena. Standing beside a man whose face had been deliberately blurred. His features were indistinct, erased. But her face was perfectly clear. I knew every line, every shadow, every expression.

And she looked terrified.

She was holding something in her hand—a small, silver locket. The one I had given her on our fifth anniversary. The one she wore every single day until the day she died.

The one that was buried with her.

I slumped back in my chair, my mind reeling.

*She wasn’t who you thought she was. And neither is your daughter.*

Vanessa’s words echoed in my head.

I told myself it was fake. A fabrication. A cruel trick. She had found an old photograph and altered it. She was trying to hurt me. Trying to tear down everything I loved because I had rejected her.

But then I looked closer.

The locket. The way Elena’s hair fell across her shoulder. The faint scar on her wrist from the time she’d fallen off her bicycle as a girl. Every detail was perfect. Too perfect to be fake.

And the date stamp in the corner… two years before she died.

Two years before the accident.

I stood up and walked to the window. My hands were shaking.

If this was real… if Elena had been meeting a man… if she had been afraid… what else didn’t I know?

Why had she never mentioned him? Why had she looked so frightened? And what did Vanessa mean—neither is your daughter?

I felt sick.

I heard a soft knock on the door. Clara walked in with a cup of coffee. She set it on the desk, then noticed my face.

“Adrian?” She stepped closer. “What is it? You look as though you’ve seen a ghost.”

I turned the screen away. “It’s nothing. Just… some things Vanessa is saying. Threats.”

Clara didn’t leave. She stood there, her gaze steady and knowing.

“She spoke of Elena,” Clara said. It wasn’t a question.

I nodded slowly. “She sent a photograph. Of Elena. With another man.”

Clara was quiet for a long time. Then she pulled a chair close and sat down.

“Adrian… there are things I have never told you. Things I promised to keep secret.”

My heart sank. “What things?”

“Your wife… she was a wonderful woman. But she was carrying a very heavy burden toward the end. She was afraid. She told me once that if anything ever happened to her… I was to watch over you and Lily. That there were people who might try to hurt you.”

“People?” I leaned forward. “What people? Who was she afraid of?”

Clara hesitated.

“Clara, please. If you know something… tell me. Because Vanessa is threatening to destroy everything. And she’s talking as if she knows Elena’s secrets.”

Clara took a breath.

“Elena told me she had made a mistake long before she met you. A connection to a family… a very powerful, very dangerous family. She tried to break free. She thought she had. But shortly before she died… she told me they had found her again.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“Who?” I asked. “Who found her?”

“She never told me their names,” Clara said. “Only that they were wealthy. Influential. And that they would stop at nothing to get back what they believed belonged to them.”

“Get back what?” I demanded.

Clara looked at me, her eyes filled with sorrow.

“She said… they believed Lily was one of theirs.”

The words hung in the air like a physical blow.

I stood up so quickly the chair scraped across the floor.

“That’s impossible,” I said. “Lily is my daughter. Elena and I were together long before she was born. Lily is mine.”

“I know,” Clara said gently. “And Elena believed that too. But those people… they had their own claim. Elena was terrified they would take her. That they would take Lily away. That was why she became so distant in those last months. Why she watched the house. Why she kept everything locked away.”

I thought back. The way Elena had sometimes stared at Lily with tears in her eyes. The way she had held her tighter than normal. The questions she had asked me—over and over—about whether I would protect our daughter no matter what happened. No matter what anyone said.

I had thought she was just being a mother.

Now I understood.

She had been preparing me.

“And Vanessa?” I said, my voice barely audible. “How does she fit into this?”

Clara stood up slowly.

“That is what frightens me most, Adrian. Vanessa showed up in your life almost exactly one year after Elena died. Beautiful. Charming. Perfect. She knew exactly what to say. Exactly how to act. And now… suddenly she is speaking Elena’s secrets.”

Clara met my eyes.

“Vanessa didn’t find out these things by accident, Adrian. Someone told her. Someone who knows Elena’s past. Someone who has been waiting for the right moment to come after you.”

I looked back at the computer screen. At the blurred man standing beside my wife. At the words Vanessa had written beneath it.

*And neither is your daughter.*

My hands trembled as I reached for the phone. I found Vanessa’s number and pressed call.

She answered on the first ring.

“Changed your mind?” she said.

“Tell me,” I said. “Who told you these things? Who sent you to me?”

Vanessa laughed. Low and cold.

“I didn’t send myself, Adrian. I was sent. And I’m not the only one watching. We know what Elena hid. We know what she lied about. And soon… everyone will know the truth.”

“Tell me who is behind this,” I said. “Tell me their names.”

May you like

But Vanessa had already made up her mind.

“You’ll find out soon enough,” she said. “Because they’re coming for Lily. And there’s nothing you can do to stop them.”
