Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST

Vanessa began to talk.

She spoke fast, as if rushing to get the words out before her courage failed. She told me everything.

Julian had built his empire on stolen inheritance. Elena’s father’s inheritance. He had been their lawyer. Their trusted advisor. And he had systematically looted their fortune. When Elena’s father died suddenly—also an accident—Julian had stepped in. He had controlled everything. Elena. Marcus. Vanessa. All of them.

Elena had discovered the truth. She had found the discrepancies. The forged signatures. The hidden accounts. And Julian had known she would destroy him.

So he had sent Marcus to silence her. But Marcus had failed to find the evidence. Elena had hidden it. And she had given the locket to Lily.

Then Julian had found Vanessa’s sister. He had taken her. Used her as leverage. And sent Vanessa to finish what Marcus had failed to do.

“I was never meant to succeed,” Vanessa said quietly. “Julian knew Elena had hidden the truth. He sent me to find out where. To see what you knew. To see if Elena had told you anything. And then… he planned to kill me too. To tie up loose ends.”

She paused.

“Elena knew all this. She wrote it down. She knew Julian would use me. She knew I would be forced to betray you. And she still believed I could change sides.”

“Because she knew you were a victim,” I said. “Just like her. Just like Lily.”

Vanessa reached into her bag. She pulled out a small USB drive and pushed it across the table toward me.

“Everything Julian has ever given me. Every instruction. Every message. Every file he sent. I copied it all. I didn’t know why. I just… couldn’t destroy it. I hoped one day… I could use it to save myself.”

I picked it up. Small. Cold. Holding the truth that could destroy Julian Vance.

“This is everything?”

“Everything I have,” Vanessa said. “But Julian keeps his real records in his private study. In a hidden safe behind the bookshelf. That is where the original copies are. The ones that will put him away forever.”

She leaned forward.

“He keeps the combination written in his desk diary. And he will be away tomorrow evening. A charity dinner. Marcus will be there too. The house will be guarded… but the guards change shifts at exactly ten o’clock. For ten minutes… the gate is unguarded.”

I stared at her.

“You want me to break in?”

“I want you to get the evidence,” Vanessa said. “I want you to destroy Julian. And I want my sister back.”

It was dangerous. Incredibly dangerous. Julian’s house would be protected. Alarms. Cameras. Guards. If I was caught… I would never see Lily again.

But if I did nothing… Julian would come for us. He would hunt us down. He would kill us all. And he would walk free.

“When is the dinner?” I asked.

“Tomorrow.”

“And your sister?”

“She will be at the river house. Two guards. Julian will be at the dinner. Marcus will be with him.”

I weighed the risk. If I went to Julian’s house… I could get the original evidence. But Vanessa’s sister would remain in danger. If I went to the river house… I could save her. But Julian would destroy the evidence before I could return.

“I need you to do something for me,” I said. “Stay at the hotel. With Clara. With Lily. Keep them safe. If I am not back by midnight… take this USB drive. Take Lily. Run. And do not stop until you are far away.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I am coming with you.”

“No—”

“Julian knows your face. He does not know I will betray him. I know the house. I know the guards. I know the codes. You cannot do this alone.” She reached across the table and gripped my hand. “I am not asking for permission, Adrian. I am telling you. We do this together. Or not at all.”

I looked into her eyes. And I saw something I had not seen before. Courage. Determination. And a desperate need to make amends.

“Okay,” I said. “Together.”

We returned to the hotel together. Clara was waiting by the door, ready to bolt. She relaxed only slightly when she saw Vanessa walking beside me. Lily was still sleeping.

That night, Vanessa sat beside Lily’s bed and watched her sleep. I stood in the doorway and watched Vanessa.

“I almost hurt her,” Vanessa whispered. “I almost took everything from you.”

“But you didn’t,” I said. “Elena knew you wouldn’t. She knew you had goodness in you. Even when you were trying your hardest to hide it.”

Vanessa turned to look at me. Tears glistened in her eyes.

“Elena was the only one who was ever kind to me. Before she died… she came to me. She told me Julian was dangerous. She told me to run. But I couldn’t. My sister…”

She wiped her face.

“Tomorrow… we get the evidence. We get my sister. And then… we make Julian pay for everything he did.”
