Chapter 16 - THE CONFESSION

The weeks that followed were a blur of legal proceedings, hearings, and media attention.
Julian was arrested. Marcus too. Charged with murder, conspiracy, fraud, kidnapping, and a dozen other crimes. The evidence was overwhelming. Elena’s ledger. The files from Julian’s safe. The signed order. The original will. Vanessa’s testimony. My testimony.
But Julian had been right about one thing—he had friends in high places.
His lawyers filed motion after motion. They claimed the evidence had been stolen. They claimed it had been planted. They claimed Vanessa and I had conspired to frame him. They questioned every document. Every witness. Every word.
Vanessa’s sister was rescued from the river house. Unharmed. But traumatized. The two of them stayed together in a safe house, guarded around the clock. Vanessa testified against Julian and Marcus. She told the truth about everything. Even the things that made her look guilty. Even the things that hurt to admit.
“I did what he told me,” she told the court, her voice steady. “Because he held my sister’s life in his hands. But I was wrong. And I am sorry. And I am telling the truth now… so that no one else ever has to be afraid of him again.”
Marcus cracked first.
He had always been weak. Julian’s puppet. Terrified of his father-in-law. And when he realized Julian would sacrifice him to save himself… he decided to talk.
He testified that Julian had ordered Elena’s death. That he had tried to refuse. That Julian had threatened to kill his own wife—Marcus’s wife—if he didn’t obey.
“I loved her,” Marcus said, his voice breaking. “Elena. I loved her from the moment I met her. But Julian… he made me afraid. He made me afraid of everything. And I let him turn me into a monster.”
He looked directly at me across the courtroom.
“I am sorry. For Elena. For Lily. For everything.”
The trial dragged on. But piece by piece, the truth came out. Every lie Julian had told. Every crime he had committed. Every life he had destroyed.
And finally… the verdict.
Guilty. On all charges.
Julian stood in the courtroom, pale and defiant, as the judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole. He did not look at me. He did not look at Vanessa. But as he was led away, he paused. And he spoke one last time.
“This is not over.”
It was a threat. A promise. But it was also the words of a defeated man.
Marcus received a reduced sentence in exchange for his testimony. He would spend years in prison. But he would be alive. And perhaps… one day… he might find a way to forgive himself.
I walked out of the courtroom into bright sunlight. Vanessa stood beside me. Her sister was waiting nearby.
“It’s over,” Vanessa said quietly. “Really over.”

I thought of Elena. Of everything she had sacrificed. Of everything she had known.
“Yes,” I said. “It is.”
