Chapter 20 - NEW BEGINNINGS

Time passes. Heals. Changes.
Lily is growing. She is taller now. Bolder. Happier. She speaks of Elena often. With love. Not grief. She tells people her mother was the bravest woman who ever lived. That she watches over us. That she always will.
Vanessa visits sometimes. She and her sister. They bring laughter back into this house. She has found peace. And in time… perhaps forgiveness too.
Clara remains. The heart of our home. The steady hand that guides us. The woman who was with us when we had nothing… and stayed when we had everything.
I visit Elena’s grave on her birthday. On our anniversary. And sometimes just because I miss her. I tell her about Lily. About how she is growing. About how brave she is. About how much she looks like her.
And I tell her: We are safe. We are free. And we are happy.
Elena gave her life to protect us. She planned every step. She prepared every defense. She fought from beyond the grave to give us this life. This peace. This safety.
And she won.
One evening, Lily and I sat on the porch, watching the sun set over the valley. She turned to me suddenly.
“Daddy?”
“Yes, Lily?”
“Mommy knew everything would turn out okay, didn’t she?”
I looked out at the golden light spilling across the sky. At the peace Elena had bought for us with her life.
“Yes,” I said. “She knew. Because she believed in us. Even when we didn’t believe in ourselves.”
Lily leaned her head against my shoulder.
“She is proud of us. I know she is.”
I put my arm around her. Held her close.
“She is. More than you will ever know.”
Somewhere, the wind stirred the trees. And for a moment… I felt it. A gentle presence. A quiet peace. The feeling that Elena was standing right beside us. Smiling.
We had lost so much. We had suffered beyond measure. But in the end… love had won. Truth had won. Family had won.

And as I sat there with my daughter, watching the stars begin to appear in the twilight sky, I knew one thing for certain.
Elena’s work was done. And our new life… was only just beginning.
