Chapter 17 - THE RETURN

We returned home.
The house felt different. Lighter. As if a heavy weight had been lifted from the walls. Lily ran through the rooms, laughing, calling Clara’s name. She stopped in the living room and looked up at the corner where the camera still watched.
“Daddy?”
I knelt beside her.
“It’s okay, baby. No one is going to hurt us anymore.”
Lily touched the locket around her neck.
“Mommy kept us safe, didn’t she?”
I placed my hand over hers.
“She did. She protected us every step of the way. Even when we didn’t know she was watching over us.”
That evening, I walked out to the cemetery. To Elena’s grave.
I sat beside the headstone as the sun set. I placed flowers there. White lilies—her favorite.
“I did what you asked,” I told her. “Julian is in prison. Marcus is paying for what he did. Vanessa is safe. Her sister is safe. And Lily… Lily is free. She is truly yours. And she is truly mine.”
I traced the letters of her name carved into the stone.
“You were right about everything. You were always one step ahead. You knew Julian would never stop. You knew Elias would fail. You knew Vanessa could be saved. You prepared us for every single thing.”
My voice softened.
“I miss you. Every day. Every moment. But I am so proud of you. You were the bravest person I ever knew.”

I stayed until the stars came out. Until the air grew cold. And then I stood up.
“Rest now, Elena. Your work is done. And I will protect Lily. For both of us. Forever.”
