Chapter 3 - UNWELCOME MESSAGES

That night I sat beside Lily’s bed until she fell asleep.

I held her hand while her breathing slowed and her grip loosened. I kissed her forehead, smoothed her hair, and apologized over and over again—not just for what Vanessa had done, but for the fact that I had doubted Clara. For the terrible moment when I had chosen to believe a stranger over the people who had loved us longest.

When I finally stood up to leave, Lily stirred.

“Daddy?” she whispered, her eyes half-closed.

“I’m here, baby. I’m not going anywhere.”

“She said… she said she’d make us sorry,” Lily murmured. “Vanessa.”

My chest tightened. “Don’t worry. She’s not coming back. I won’t let her.”

Lily looked at me with eyes that were too old for her age. “She didn’t say she’d come back. She said she’d send someone.”

I forced a smile and tucked the blanket around her shoulders. “Go to sleep. Nothing is going to happen. I promise.”

But as I walked out of her room and closed the door, my own promise felt hollow.

I went downstairs to the kitchen. Clara was sitting at the table with a cup of tea, staring out the window into the dark. She looked up when I walked in.

“Is she asleep?” Clara asked gently.

“Finally,” I said. I pulled out the chair across from her and sat down. “Clara… I can’t tell you how sorry I am. I should have listened to you. I should have trusted you from the start.”

Clara reached across the table and touched my hand. “I know you’re a good man, Adrian. And I know that woman… she knows exactly what to say. She knows how to look innocent. She knows how to make you doubt yourself.”

“She did a very good job of that,” I admitted. “But the camera told the truth. And she’s gone. The wedding is off. She’ll never step foot in this house again.”

Clara didn’t look reassured. She glanced toward the window again, her expression serious.

“Be careful, Adrian,” she said quietly. “That woman… there’s something about her. Something I couldn’t place from the very beginning. She hides things. She smiles to your face, but behind your back… she is different.”

“I know,” I said. “And I’ll be on guard. We all will be.”

But I didn’t fully understand until the next morning.

It started with a phone call.

I was in my study, going through work emails, when my cell buzzed. An unknown number.

“Hello?”

“Adrian,” Vanessa’s voice came down the line. Smooth. Calm. Not angry at all. “I’ve been thinking about us. About everything we planned. Surely you aren’t going to throw away our future over one little argument.”

“You lied,” I said. “You tried to frame Clara. You threatened my daughter. There is no ‘us’ anymore, Vanessa. Don’t call me again.”

I went to hang up.

“Wait,” she said. Her voice dropped an octave. “Before you do something you’ll regret… ask yourself why I was in that room. Ask yourself why I was so determined to get into this family. Why I wanted to marry you so badly.”

“I don’t care why,” I said.

“Maybe you should,” Vanessa said. “Because you don’t know everything about your precious wife, Adrian. The one you miss so terribly. The one whose name you say with such reverence. Elena had secrets. Big ones. And I’m not the only one who knows.”

My blood ran cold.

“Don’t you dare speak her name,” I said.

“Or what?” Vanessa said. Her voice turned sharp. “You think Elena was perfect? You think she was some kind of saint? She was hiding things from you, Adrian. Things that would break your heart. And if you keep pushing me away… I’ll start telling people exactly what I know.”

I gripped the phone so tightly my fingers ached. “You know nothing about Elena.”

“Is that so?” Vanessa laughed—a cold, bitter sound. “Keep watching, Adrian. Because I’m not going anywhere. And the truth always rises to the surface. Whether you like it or not.”

The line went dead.

I stood there, phone in hand, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Elena. My wife. The love of my life. She had been gone for two years. Taken from us suddenly, in an accident that still felt like a bad dream. There was nothing I wouldn’t give to have her back. There was nothing I wouldn’t do to protect her memory.

And now Vanessa was threatening to drag her name through the mud. Threatening to make up lies about a woman who couldn’t defend herself.

I told myself it was empty threats. I told myself she was lashing out because she’d lost everything.

But then I opened my email.

There was a message from another unknown address. No subject. No name. Just a single photograph attached.

I clicked it.

It was Elena. Standing with a man I didn’t recognize. In a place I had never seen. They were standing close together. And Elena looked… afraid.

May you like

Beneath the photograph, typed in plain black letters, was a single sentence that turned my world upside down:

*SHE WASN’T WHO YOU THOUGHT SHE WAS. AND NEITHER IS YOUR DAUGHTER.*
