Chapter 9: The Voice That Came Back From the Dead
Marcus stood in the abandoned clinic, holding his phone.
He had heard Sophia's voice.
He knew it.
He could never mistake it.
But the last sentence made no sense.
Your father.
His father had been dead for twelve years.
He had attended the funeral.
He had inherited the company.
He had spent years visiting the family grave.
So how could Sophia have been warning him about a man who was no longer alive?
"Mr. Carter?""
The detective approached.
"Who was that?""
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
"My wife.""
The detective frowned.
"Your wife is missing.""
Marcus looked directly at him.
"Not anymore.""
The call had lasted less than a minute.
But the police were able to trace its approximate location.
A small residential property outside Raleigh.
The address belonged to an elderly woman named Margaret Hayes.
Marcus had never heard of her.
But when the officers arrived, they found the front door unlocked.
Inside was a small living room.
A television.
A collection of old photographs.
And a white lily sitting in a glass vase.
Marcus stopped.
Sophia loved white lilies.
He walked toward the vase.
The flower was fresh.
Someone had placed it there recently.
"Search the house," the detective ordered.
Officers moved through the rooms.
Then a voice came from upstairs.
"Police! Don't move!""
A door slammed.
Footsteps followed.
Marcus ran toward the staircase.
At the top, an officer stood outside a bedroom.
"Sir, we found someone.""
Marcus pushed past him.
And there she was.
A woman sitting beside the window.
Her hair was gray.
Her face was thinner than he remembered.
She wore a pale-blue cardigan.
But her eyes were exactly the same.
Sophia.
His wife.
Alive.
For three years, he had mourned her.
For three years, he had raised their daughter believing she would never see her mother again.
Now she was sitting in front of him.
Marcus couldn't move.
"Sophia?""
She looked up.
Her lips trembled.
"Marcus.""
He crossed the room.
Then he dropped to his knees.
He took her hands.
They were cold.
He pressed them against his face.
"You're alive.""
Sophia began crying.
"I'm sorry.""
He shook his head.
"Don't say that.""
"I tried to come home.""
"Why didn't you?""
She looked toward the door.
"Because they told me Lily was dead.""
Marcus froze.
"What?""
Sophia closed her eyes.
"They said the baby had died in the hospital. They told me you had been informed. They showed me a document with your signature.""
Marcus stared.
"I never signed anything.""
"I know that now.""
She reached for his face.
"I only discovered the truth when I escaped.""
Marcus pressed his forehead against her hands.
Then he whispered:
"Lily is alive.""
Sophia stopped breathing.
"What?""
"She's alive, Sophia. Our daughter is alive.""
Her hands began shaking.
"Where?""
"At the hospital.""
Sophia covered her mouth.
Then a sound escaped her.
A mixture of laughter and sobbing.
"My baby.""
Marcus held her.
"She's three years old now.""
Sophia cried harder.
"Three?""
He nodded.
"She's beautiful. She loves dogs. She has your eyes.""
Sophia looked toward the window.
"Can I see her?""
"Yes.""
"Now?""
Marcus kissed her forehead.
"Now.""
The doctors examined Sophia at a nearby hospital.
She was severely underweight and showed signs of prolonged medical neglect.
Her medical records indicated that she had been given sedatives and other medications over an extended period.
The doctors believed she had been kept isolated and moved between facilities.
But she was alive.
And that was all Marcus could think about.
Richard arrived shortly after midnight.
He stood outside her room.
"Marcus.""
Marcus looked up.
"She's here.""
Richard nodded.
"I heard.""
Marcus pointed toward the bed.
"Three years, Richard.""
The lawyer lowered his eyes.
"I know.""
"No. You don't.""
Marcus stood.
"I buried my wife. I raised my daughter alone. I married a woman who nearly killed Lily. And all this time, Sophia was somewhere in this state, waiting for someone to find her.""
Richard didn't answer.
Marcus looked toward the bed.
"Someone knew.""
Richard nodded.
"We'll find out who.""
Sophia opened her eyes.
"Marcus?""
He immediately returned to her side.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
She looked at Richard.
"Is the foundation safe?""
Marcus frowned.
"What?""
"The Lily Carter Protection Trust.""
Richard stepped closer.
"Yes. The trust remains intact.""
Sophia closed her eyes in relief.
"Good.""
Marcus took her hand.
"Why are you asking about the trust?""
Sophia looked at him.
"Because that's what they wanted.""
"Who?""
"Your father.""
Marcus froze.
Sophia explained that the man she had believed was helping her had actually been working with Adrian Cole.
But she didn't mean Marcus's father had physically arranged her disappearance.
She meant his father had established the network that made everything possible.
Years earlier, before his death, Thomas Carter had created a private investment arrangement involving several companies.
One of those companies had been used to facilitate fraudulent adoptions and transfer money through shell accounts.
Marcus stared.
"My father?""
Sophia nodded.
"He knew about the illegal adoption business.""
Richard looked shocked.
"That would explain the old financial records.""
Sophia continued.
"Thomas wanted control over several family estates. He believed children who inherited property could become obstacles.""
Marcus looked down.
"My father was involved in this?""
"Not directly in every crime. But he funded the people who made it possible.""
Sophia reached for a glass of water.
"After he died, Jonathan took over the accounts. Adrian continued the operation. Vanessa was brought into the family because she was one of the people who knew how the system worked.""
Marcus sat down slowly.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I tried.""
Sophia's eyes filled with tears.
"But I was afraid you'd believe your brother.""
Marcus shook his head.
"I would have believed you.""
She looked at him.
"Then why did you ignore me when I told you something was wrong?""
He had no answer.
Sophia turned toward the window.
"I knew you loved me. But I also knew how much you wanted to believe your family was good.""
Marcus took her hand.
"I'm sorry.""
Sophia squeezed his fingers.
"Find the children, Marcus. All of them.""
The next morning, Marcus arranged for Sophia to speak with the investigators.
She provided names, dates, and locations.
She described the clinic where she had been held.
She explained how Adrian and Jonathan had moved money between companies.
She also revealed something about Vanessa.
"Emily wasn't born cruel," Sophia said.
The detective looked at her.
"What do you mean?""
"She was lied to from the beginning. Adrian told her that Grace abandoned her. He showed her forged documents. He told her that the Carters had stolen her inheritance.""
"But she still pushed Lily into the pool.""
Sophia closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
The detective waited.
Sophia opened them again.
"She knew Lily was innocent. She knew exactly what she was doing.""
Her voice became stronger.
"Whatever happened to Emily, it does not excuse what she did to my daughter.""
The detective nodded.
Then he asked about the twins.
Sophia looked toward Marcus.
"Daniel is alive. I found him before I disappeared.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Where?""
"With a family in Tennessee.""
"Was he told about his birth?""
Sophia shook her head.
"No. I wanted to speak to him personally.""
"Why?""
"Because I wanted him to have the choice to know his family. I didn't want another adult deciding his life for him.""
The detective wrote something down.
"Do you know his current name?""
Sophia nodded.
"Daniel Miller.""
Two days later, Marcus received a call from the police.
They had located Daniel.
He was twenty-three years old.
He lived in Knoxville, Tennessee, and worked as a mechanic.
He had been raised by a foster family before being adopted.
He knew very little about his biological parents.
Marcus asked to speak with him.
The young man agreed to travel to Charlotte.
When he arrived, Sophia was sitting in a hospital room.
Marcus introduced them.
"Daniel, this is Sophia.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Who is she?""
Sophia smiled through tears.
"I'm the woman who gave birth to you.""
Daniel went completely still.
He looked at Marcus.
Then back at Sophia.
"That's not possible.""
Sophia nodded.
"I know this is difficult.""
He stepped backward.
"Are you saying I'm adopted?""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Sophia lowered her eyes.
"Because someone stole the truth from you.""
Daniel looked toward the floor.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then he asked:
"Do I have a sister?""
Sophia smiled.
"Yes.""
"Where is she?""
"She's at the hospital.""
When Daniel entered my room, I was sitting beside Max.
He stood near the doorway, looking uncertain.
My father was beside me.
Sophia stood behind him.
I looked at the new man.
"Who you?""
He smiled nervously.
"I'm Daniel.""
I pointed at Max.
"That's Max.""
Daniel laughed.
"He's a very handsome dog.""
I nodded.
"My Max.""
Then Sophia stepped forward.
"Hello, sweetheart.""
I looked at her.
Something about her face felt familiar.
I had seen her in photographs.
My father had shown me pictures.
But I didn't understand why she was standing in my room.
She knelt beside my bed.
"Hello, Lily.""
I stared at her.
"Mommy?""
Sophia began crying.
"Yes, baby.""
I reached toward her.
She took my hand.
I touched her cheek.
Then I looked at my father.
"Daddy, Mommy home?""
He nodded.
"Yes, princess.""
I smiled.
And Sophia wrapped her arms around me.
For the first time in three years, our family was together.
Max wagged his tail.
He pushed his head between us.
Sophia laughed through her tears.
"There's my brave boy.""
She stroked his golden fur.
"You saved my little girl.""
Max licked her hand.
And my father whispered:
"You saved all of us.""
But our reunion didn't mean the danger was over.
That afternoon, investigators discovered that Adrian Cole had been released from police custody after providing information about the illegal adoption network.
He had agreed to testify against Jonathan and Vanessa.
In exchange, he received temporary protection while prosecutors reviewed his cooperation.
But Adrian disappeared before the end of the day.
His apartment was empty.
His car was found abandoned.
His bank accounts had been drained.
And the security cameras outside his building had been disabled.
The police issued a nationwide alert.
Then another discovery complicated everything.
A detective found a message on Jonathan's phone.
It had been sent the night before his arrest.
The original ledger is still in the Carter house.
Another message followed.
If Sophia survives, the entire network collapses.
And a final message.
The boy must never learn who his real father is.
Marcus read the messages twice.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"Your real father?""
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Marcus had no answer.
Sophia looked at the detective.
"There's something I haven't told you.""
The detective turned.
"What?""
Sophia took a deep breath.
"Daniel isn't just connected to the illegal adoption.""
She looked at Marcus.
Then at the young man standing beside my bed.
"His biological father is someone we all know.""
Marcus went still.
"Who?""
Sophia's eyes filled with tears.
"Adrian Cole.""
Daniel stepped backward.
"No.""
Sophia reached for him.
"I'm sorry.""
Daniel shook his head.
"You're saying that man is my father?""
Sophia nodded.
"Yes.""
He looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
Then he walked out of the room.
Marcus followed him.
But before he reached the door, Sophia spoke.
"Marcus, wait.""
He turned.
She was holding a small envelope.
"I found this inside the clinic.""
Marcus approached.
"What is it?""
Sophia handed it to him.
The envelope contained a letter written by Thomas Carter.
His father's handwriting.
Marcus opened it.
The first sentence made his blood run cold.
If Adrian ever comes looking for his son, do not let him near the Carter family.
Marcus looked up.
Sophia whispered:
"Your father knew Daniel was Adrian's child.""
Then she added something that made the room fall silent.
"He also knew Adrian was planning to use Daniel to take control of your company.""
My father looked at the letter again.
And beneath the first paragraph was a handwritten date.
A date from twelve years earlier.
The day Thomas Carter supposedly died.
But the letter contained information about an event that had happened six months after his funeral.
Which meant one thing.
Someone had been writing under his father's name.
And the person who had been controlling the entire family operation might still be alive.
*The investigation was no longer about Vanessa.*
May you like
It was about discovering who had been pulling the strings from the beginning.
And Sophia knew exactly where to look.
