Chapter 8: My Father's Brother Was Behind Everything
My father stared at the photograph for nearly ten minutes.
Jonathan Carter.
His younger brother.
The man who had carried my father's briefcase at Sophia's funeral.
The man who had stood beside him when the coffin was lowered.
The man who had promised to help raise me if Marcus ever needed support.
And the man whose face appeared beside Adrian Cole in a photograph Sophia had hidden behind a locked cabinet.
Marcus picked up his phone.
"Daniel, cancel the trip.""
"Sir?""
"I need you to find Jonathan.""
Daniel paused.
"Mr. Jonathan Carter?""
"Yes.""
"Is there a problem?""
Marcus looked at the photograph.
"There's a very serious one.""
Jonathan was fifty-two years old.
He had worked with Marcus since the early days of Carter Development Group.
Unlike his brother, he preferred staying out of the public eye.
He managed several investment portfolios and handled private acquisitions.
He had always seemed loyal.
When Sophia died, Jonathan had helped Marcus arrange the funeral.
When Lily was born, he had bought her a silver bracelet.
When Vanessa entered the family, he had welcomed her immediately.
He had even defended her whenever Marcus complained about her treatment of Max.
Now Marcus was beginning to understand why.
Jonathan had been involved before Vanessa ever entered the house.
And Sophia had known it.
At 8:30 the next morning, Jonathan arrived at the mansion.
He walked into the library carrying a leather briefcase.
"Marcus, Daniel said you wanted to see me.""
Marcus stood beside the fireplace.
"Close the door.""
Jonathan frowned.
"What's going on?""
Marcus placed the photograph on the desk.
Jonathan looked at it.
His expression changed for a fraction of a second.
Then he smiled.
"Where did you find this?""
"Inside Sophia's cabinet.""
Jonathan picked it up.
"That's an old photograph.""
"Who is the man beside her?""
"Adrian Cole.""
"How do you know him?""
Jonathan shrugged.
"Business. He worked with several investors.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Did you introduce Vanessa to me?""
Jonathan looked confused.
"What?""
"Did you introduce Rebecca Hale to me at the charity fundraiser?""
Jonathan placed the photograph down.
"Marcus, I don't know what you're talking about.""
Marcus opened his laptop.
He played the recording from Sophia's hidden device.
Jonathan listened without moving.
When it ended, he slowly closed the laptop.
"That's a serious accusation.""
"Then explain it.""
Jonathan sighed.
"Adrian was involved in a private investment deal. He made mistakes. Sophia became suspicious. That's all.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Did you know Vanessa was Rebecca Hale?""
Jonathan said nothing.
"Did you know she was trying to access Lily's trust?""
Still nothing.
Marcus moved closer.
"Did you help her?""
Jonathan looked up.
Then he said something that made Marcus's blood run cold.
"You have no idea what Sophia was doing to this family.""
Marcus grabbed the edge of the desk.
"Explain.""
Jonathan walked toward the window.
"Your wife was obsessed with controlling everything. The company. The trust.
The properties. Even your decisions.""
Marcus stared.
"Sophia protected our daughter.""
"She protected her money.""
"She was trying to protect Lily from people like you.""
Jonathan turned.
"People like me?""
"People who thought they were entitled to everything she had.""
Jonathan laughed bitterly.
"Do you know what I did for this company? I built half of it while you were busy playing the devoted husband.""
Marcus's voice hardened.
"You were paid.""
"Not enough.""
"And that justifies what happened to Sophia?""
Jonathan's expression changed.
For the first time, the mask slipped.
"She was going to destroy everything.""
Marcus went still.
"What did you do?""
Jonathan stared at him.
Then he reached into his jacket.
Marcus stepped back.
But Jonathan only removed a folded document.
He placed it on the desk.
It was a copy of a property agreement.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Marcus.
Except Marcus had never signed it.
Jonathan smiled.
"Your wife discovered that I had been moving company funds into private accounts. She threatened to expose me.""
Marcus looked at the document.
"You forged my signature.""
Jonathan shrugged.
"She was going to ruin me.""
"So you helped Vanessa?""
"I gave her access to information.""
"About my daughter?""
"About the trust.""
Marcus's voice rose.
"You helped someone push a three-year-old into a swimming pool!""
Jonathan looked away.
"I didn't know she would actually do it.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Then why did you help her?""
Jonathan's expression hardened.
"Because Sophia was supposed to be gone, and you were supposed to move on. Instead, she left you a fortune that none of us could touch.""
Marcus stared.
"What did you mean, supposed to be gone?""
Jonathan realized his mistake.
He looked toward the door.
Then Marcus heard Daniel's voice.
"Mr. Carter, the police are here.""
Jonathan backed away.
"Marcus, listen.""
"No.""
"You don't understand.""
"I understand enough.""
Jonathan reached for his briefcase.
But Daniel entered with two officers.
One officer stepped forward.
"Jonathan Carter, we need you to come with us.""
Jonathan looked at his brother.
Then he smiled.
"You think this ends with me?""
Marcus frowned.
Jonathan leaned closer.
"Ask Adrian what happened to Sophia after the hospital.""
The officers took him away.
But his final words followed Marcus long after the door closed.
"She's not the only one who disappeared.""
The police recovered Jonathan's phone.
Inside were messages between him, Adrian, and Vanessa.
Some dated back more than three years.
One message from Jonathan read:
Sophia is asking questions. You need to move faster.
Adrian replied:
The records are under control.
Another message said:
Once the child is old enough, we can challenge the trust.
Jonathan responded:
There won't be a child to challenge anything if Emily follows the plan.
The detectives studied the messages.
Then they found something worse.
A photograph of Sophia taken inside a private medical facility.
The date was three days after her supposed death.
She was sitting upright in a hospital bed.
Her face was bruised.
Her wrist was restrained.
And beside her stood Adrian Cole.
The photograph was enough to reopen the investigation into her disappearance.
But the location remained unknown.
Meanwhile, at the police station, Vanessa was beginning to panic.
She had spent years believing she controlled every situation.
She had manipulated Marcus.
She had used Adrian.
She had relied on Jonathan.
But now all three men were being questioned.
A detective entered the room.
"Mrs. Carter.""
Vanessa looked up.
"Yes?""
"We have a few more questions.""
She folded her arms.
"My lawyer has already advised me not to answer anything.""
"That's your right.""
The detective placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Sophia in the medical facility.
Vanessa stared at it.
Her face went pale.
"Where did you get that?""
The detective leaned forward.
"You tell me.""
Vanessa looked away.
"She was supposed to be dead.""
The detective remained silent.
Vanessa realized what she had said.
She closed her eyes.
Then the detective asked:
"Who ordered her disappearance?""
Vanessa laughed weakly.
"You don't understand.""
"Then help us understand.""
Vanessa looked up.
"Adrian didn't kill Sophia.""
The detective waited.
"Jonathan didn't kill her either.""
"Who did?""
Vanessa swallowed.
Then she whispered:
"Someone who wanted Sophia alive.""
At the mansion, Marcus received a call from Grace.
She sounded frightened.
"Mr. Carter, I found something.""
"What?""
"I went through the documents Sophia gave me. There's a second birth certificate.""
Marcus sat down.
"For whom?""
"Daniel.""
"Her twin brother?""
"Yes. But the name on the certificate isn't Daniel Miller.""
Marcus frowned.
"Then whose name is it?""
Grace hesitated.
"Daniel Carter.""
Marcus froze.
"What?""
"Your wife had arranged for the boy to be legally adopted into your family.""
Marcus looked toward the photograph of the twins.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She was going to. She had already begun the paperwork.""
Marcus's voice became quieter.
"Where is he now?""
"I don't know. But I found a letter from Sophia.""
"What does it say?""
Grace began reading.
If Daniel is ever separated from the people who love him, look for the blue house.
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Blue house?""
Grace continued.
The house beside the old Carter estate. The one with the white fence.
Marcus stood.
He knew exactly which house she meant.
It was a small property his father had owned decades earlier.
It had been sold after his death.
But Jonathan had recently purchased it.
Marcus immediately called Daniel Reed.
"Find the ownership records for the blue house beside the old estate.""
Daniel answered.
"Sir, I know that property.""
"Who owns it?""
"Your brother.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Get the police there.""
That evening, officers entered the small blue house.
They found no one inside.
But they discovered a locked room in the basement.
Inside were photographs of Sophia.
Medical records.
Old adoption documents.
And a collection of personal belongings.
One photograph showed two children standing beside a woman.
The woman was Vanessa.
The children were Emily and Daniel.
But the date was impossible.
It had been taken six months after Vanessa claimed she had never met her brother.
The officers searched the room.
Behind a cabinet, they found a small door.
Beyond it was a narrow storage space.
And inside was a hospital bed.
An oxygen tank.
Several empty medication bottles.
And a handwritten note.
*SOPHIA — TRANSFERRED TO WARD 6.*
Marcus arrived twenty minutes later.
He stared at the empty bed.
"Where is she?""
A detective approached.
"We don't know yet.""
Marcus looked at the medication bottles.
"How long was someone keeping her here?""
The detective examined the labels.
"Possibly several months.""
Marcus felt sick.
Then Daniel Reed called.
"Mr. Carter, we've identified the facility.""
"Where?""
"An abandoned private clinic outside Raleigh.""
Marcus turned toward the detective.
"Let's go.""
The clinic stood behind a line of trees.
Its windows were boarded.
The entrance was locked.
Police officers forced the door open.
Inside, the air smelled of dust and disinfectant.
They searched the ground floor.
Nothing.
Then an officer found a stairwell leading to a lower level.
At the bottom was a corridor lined with old medical rooms.
One room contained a wheelchair.
Another held a collection of patient files.
And the final room had a small whiteboard.
Written across it were two words.
*SOPHIA CARTER.*
Marcus stepped inside.
On the wall was a photograph of Sophia.
Beneath it was a handwritten note.
Patient transferred. Do not disclose location.
Marcus turned toward the detective.
"Find the transfer records.""
An officer opened a cabinet.
Inside was a folder.
He flipped through several pages.
Then stopped.
"Sir?""
Marcus approached.
The officer pointed at the final entry.
It contained a transfer date.
A destination.
And a patient's name.
But the name wasn't Sophia Carter.
It was Grace Miller.
Marcus stared.
"Why would Sophia be transferred under Grace's name?""
The detective looked at him.
"Maybe she wasn't the only patient.""
Then another officer entered.
"Detective, we found a vehicle outside.""
"What kind?""
"A medical transport van.""
The officer handed over a photograph.
The van was old.
Its license plate had been removed.
But the side panel carried a faded logo.
*ST. MARY'S MEDICAL SERVICES.*
Marcus recognized it immediately.
The same hospital where Sophia had disappeared.
Then his phone rang.
An unknown number.
He answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
"Marcus?""
He stopped breathing.
"Sophia?""
There was a long pause.
Then the woman said:
"Don't trust anyone.""
Marcus gripped the phone.
"Where are you?""
"Please listen. They know you've found the clinic.""
"Who?""
A faint sound came through the line.
Then Sophia whispered:
"Jonathan wasn't working alone.""
Marcus looked at the detective.
"Tell me who was with him.""
The woman's breathing became uneven.
Then she said:
"Your father.""
Marcus froze.
His father had been dead for twelve years.
May you like
Before he could ask another question, the call ended.
And somewhere in the abandoned clinic, a phone began ringing.
