Chapter 6: The Woman in the Hospital Photograph
Marcus drove back to Charlotte without stopping.
Richard sat beside him, holding the photograph Daniel had sent electronically.
It showed a woman standing outside a small convenience store.
She wore a dark coat and a scarf.
Her hair was longer than Marcus remembered.
Her face was thinner.
But the eyes were unmistakable.
Sophia.
His wife.
The woman he had buried three years earlier.
Marcus stared at the photograph until his eyes burned.
"Where was this taken?""
Daniel answered through the car speaker.
"Near the hospital, sir. Approximately two miles away.""
"Who took it?""
"We're reviewing nearby cameras.""
"Was she alone?""
"Yes.""
Marcus gripped the steering wheel.
"Then find her.""
"Sir, the police are already involved.""
"I don't care who is involved. Find my wife.""
Richard looked at him.
"Marcus, we need to be certain.""
Marcus turned sharply.
"Certain of what?""
"That the photograph is genuine. It could be a trap.""
Marcus looked at Sophia's face again.
For three years, he had dreamed of seeing her.
Now that the possibility had become real, he was terrified.
"What if it isn't a trap?""
Richard didn't answer.
Marcus looked back at the road.
"Then someone has been keeping my wife away from her daughter.""
At the hospital, I was sitting in bed with Max beside me.
He had become unusually protective.
Whenever someone entered the room, he lifted his head.
Whenever footsteps approached, his ears moved.
The nurse brought me a small bowl of fruit.
"Would you like some strawberries, Lily?""
I shook my head.
"Max eat?""
She laughed.
"Max can't eat those.""
I looked at him.
"Max hungry.""
The nurse smiled.
"Your daddy will be here soon.""
Then someone knocked.
A woman wearing a white medical uniform entered.
She carried a clipboard.
"Good morning, Lily.""
I looked at her.
Max stood.
His body became stiff.
The woman smiled.
"Hello, handsome.""
She reached toward him.
Max growled.
The woman pulled her hand back.
"Goodness. He's still aggressive.""
I grabbed his collar.
"No.""
The woman looked at me.
"Don't worry, sweetheart. I'm here to check your bandage.""
Max barked.
Then he moved between me and the woman.
A nurse entered from the hallway.
"Is everything okay?""
The woman in white turned.
"Yes. I was just checking the patient.""
The nurse looked at the clipboard.
"You're not assigned to this room.""
The woman's smile disappeared.
"Excuse me?""
"I've never seen you before.""
The woman stepped toward the door.
Max barked again.
The nurse moved closer.
"Security!""
The woman ran.
Two hospital guards caught her near the elevators.
She struggled.
"Get your hands off me!""
One guard took the clipboard.
Inside was a printed photograph of my hospital bed.
My name.
My room number.
And a handwritten instruction.
*REMOVE THE DOG.*
When Marcus arrived, I was crying.
He rushed into the room.
"Lily!""
I reached for him.
"Daddy!""
He lifted me carefully.
"What happened, sweetheart?""
I pointed toward the door.
"Bad lady.""
He looked at the nurse.
She explained what had happened.
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Where is she?""
"Security has her.""
He turned to Daniel.
"Call the police. Nobody releases that woman.""
Daniel nodded.
Then Marcus noticed Max.
The dog was standing beside the bed.
His ears were raised.
His eyes were fixed on the hallway.
Marcus crouched and placed a hand against his neck.
"Good boy.""
Max leaned into him.
Marcus looked at me.
"Did she hurt you?""
I shook my head.
"Max stop.""
My father closed his eyes.
He kissed my forehead.
"That dog has saved you twice.""
Then he looked at Daniel.
"From now on, Max stays with Lily.""
The woman was identified as Melissa Grant.
She had been hired through a temporary medical staffing agency.
But the agency had no record of assigning her to the hospital.
Her identification badge was fake.
Her clipboard contained confidential patient information.
And her phone held several messages from an unknown number.
One message read:
The child must be moved before the father returns.
Another said:
The dog cannot remain in the room.
The police questioned her for hours.
She initially refused to speak.
Then they showed her the pool footage.
Her expression changed.
She asked for a lawyer.
But before she could be taken away, she made one statement.
"I was only supposed to remove the dog.""
The detective leaned forward.
"Who gave you those instructions?""
She looked down.
"Adrian.""
"Adrian Cole?""
She nodded.
"Did he tell you why?""
Melissa swallowed.
"Because the dog knows something.""
That sentence changed the investigation.
The detective contacted Marcus immediately.
"Mr. Carter, we need to discuss your dog.""
Marcus looked at Max.
The golden retriever was sleeping beside my bed.
"What about him?""
"Miss Grant claims Adrian Cole believes the dog witnessed something connected to your wife's disappearance.""
Marcus frowned.
"Max was a puppy when Sophia died.""
"According to her statement, Adrian believes your wife left something with the dog.""
Marcus stared.
"That's impossible.""
The detective remained serious.
"Maybe. But we're investigating.""
Marcus looked at Max again.
The dog opened one eye.
Then he stood and walked toward the corner of the room.
He began sniffing the small travel bag Evelyn had brought from the mansion.
Marcus watched him.
"Max?""
The dog pushed his nose against the bag.
Then he pawed at it.
Evelyn frowned.
"That's my bag.""
Max continued scratching.
"What's wrong with him?""
Marcus approached.
"Let him look.""
Max grabbed a folded scarf with his teeth and pulled it out.
It was one of Sophia's old scarves.
Evelyn gasped.
"That belonged to Mrs. Carter.""
Max dropped it.
Then he pushed his nose against the lining.
Marcus noticed something unusual.
A small section of stitching had been repaired.
He carefully examined it.
"There's something inside.""
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Marcus found a tiny pocket hidden beneath the fabric.
Inside was a small brass key.
And a folded piece of paper.
The paper contained only four words.
*THE HOUSE KNOWS EVERYTHING.*
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
"What does that mean?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
But Max was already moving.
He walked to the hospital door, turned around, and barked.
As if he wanted them to follow.
That evening, Marcus returned to the mansion with Daniel and Evelyn.
The police had secured the property.
Vanessa's belongings were being examined.
The library remained untouched.
Marcus stood in front of the locked cabinet.
He looked at the brass key from Sophia's scarf.
It was different from the silver key they had used the night before.
He examined the cabinet.
There was a second keyhole hidden beneath the lower shelf.
The brass key fit.
The lock opened.
Inside was a small recording device, a bundle of letters, and a photograph of Sophia holding a newborn baby.
Marcus picked up the photograph.
He smiled faintly.
"That's Lily.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"No, sir.""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
Evelyn pointed at the photograph.
"Look at the date.""
He examined the back.
The date was written in Sophia's handwriting.
It was two months before Lily was born.
But the baby in the photograph was clearly older.
Marcus frowned.
"Then who is this?""
Evelyn looked terrified.
"I don't know.""
Marcus turned the photograph over again.
Beneath the date, Sophia had written a name.
*EMILY.*
He opened the bundle of letters.
The first was addressed to a woman named Grace Miller.
The second was addressed to a lawyer in Atlanta.
The third contained a hospital identification bracelet.
Marcus stared at it.
The bracelet read:
*BABY GIRL — SOPHIA CARTER.*
He felt his stomach tighten.
"Why would Sophia have a hospital bracelet for another baby?""
Evelyn sat down.
"Mr. Carter, I think there's something you don't know about the weeks before Lily was born.""
Marcus looked at her.
"What?""
Evelyn's voice trembled.
"Mrs. Carter told me that she had been contacted by a woman claiming to have information about a child.""
"What child?""
"She said the baby had been born at the same hospital as Lily.""
Marcus stared.
"Was Lily switched at birth?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Marcus picked up the recording device.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Sophia's voice emerged.
It was weak.
But unmistakable.
"If Marcus ever hears this, I need him to understand something.""
Marcus gripped the device.
"My darling, I never told you the whole truth.""
A pause.
Then Sophia continued.
"Before Lily was born, I discovered that someone had been using our family name to arrange an illegal adoption.""
Marcus stared at the device.
"What?""
Sophia's voice continued.
"I found a woman named Grace Miller. She told me that a baby had been taken from her shortly after birth. She believed the child had been given to another family through fraudulent paperwork.""
A sound of movement followed.
Then Sophia whispered:
"I believe that baby is connected to us.""
Marcus stopped breathing.
He looked at the photograph of the baby.
Then at the hospital bracelet.
Sophia's recording continued.
"I don't know whether the child is alive. I don't know who arranged it. But I discovered that Rebecca Hale was involved in the hospital records.""
The recording crackled.
Then Sophia said something that made Marcus drop the device.
"Marcus, if you're listening to this, please find Emily Miller.""
The recording ended.
For several seconds, the library was silent.
Then Evelyn spoke.
"Mrs. Carter told me something else.""
Marcus slowly turned.
"What?""
Evelyn looked toward the staircase.
"She said the woman who took Lily into her arms after birth wasn't the nurse listed on the hospital records.""
Marcus's face went pale.
"Who was it?""
Evelyn swallowed.
"Vanessa.""
At that exact moment, Daniel rushed into the library.
"Mr. Carter!""
Marcus turned.
"What happened?""
Daniel held up his phone.
"We found Vanessa.""
"Where?""
"At a private airfield outside Charlotte.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Is she alone?""
"No, sir.""
Daniel hesitated.
"She's with Adrian Cole.""
Marcus reached for his coat.
"Call the police.""
Daniel nodded.
Then he added:
"There's something else. They aren't trying to leave the country.""
Marcus stopped.
"Then what are they doing?""
Daniel looked at the photograph in Marcus's hand.
"They're waiting for someone.""
"Who?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Emily Miller.""
Marcus stared at the name.
The woman from Sophia's recording.
The missing baby.
The person whose identity had been hidden for years.
Then his phone rang.
An unknown number.
He answered.
A woman's trembling voice came through.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Grace Miller.""
Marcus tightened his grip.
"How did you get this number?""
"Your wife gave it to me three years ago. She told me to call if anything happened to her.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Do you know where Emily is?""
The woman began crying.
"Yes.""
"Where?""
There was a long silence.
Then Grace whispered:
"She's been living in your house.""
Marcus froze.
"What?""
Grace continued.
"She's the woman you married.""
The phone slipped slightly in his hand.
Vanessa.
Rebecca Hale.
And the missing child.
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
Then Grace said the words that destroyed everything he thought he knew.
"Mr. Carter, Vanessa Monroe isn't just the woman who tried to kill your daughter.""
"She's the daughter Sophia spent three years trying to find.""
May you like
And before Marcus could ask another question, Grace added:
"She's also the reason Sophia never made it home.""
