Chapter 5: My Mother May Have Been Murdered

My father didn't sleep that night.

He sat in his office with Sophia's photograph in one hand and the medical records in the other.

For three years, he had believed his wife died from complications following an unexpected medical emergency.

He had attended her funeral.

He had watched the coffin being lowered.

He had stood beside my crib afterward, promising that he would raise me with the same love Sophia had given us.

Now he was staring at a photograph that suggested something impossible.

She was alive.

At 6:45 a.m., he called Richard Bennett.

"Get to my office.""

Richard arrived twenty minutes later.

Marcus placed the photograph on his desk.

"Tell me everything you know about Dr. Nolan.""

Richard removed his glasses.

"His full name is Dr. Samuel Nolan. He was a senior physician at St. Mary's Hospital.""

"Was?""

"He retired last year.""

"Where is he now?""

Richard hesitated.

"Somewhere outside Asheville, I believe.""

Marcus stood.

"Find him.""

"Marcus, we need to be careful. If these documents are genuine, we're dealing with something much bigger than fraud.""

"I don't care.""

"Your daughter is still recovering. You should be with her.""

Marcus looked at a photograph of me on his desk.

"I almost lost her because I trusted the wrong woman. I'm not making that mistake again.""

Richard nodded.

"I'll arrange a meeting.""

At the hospital, I was beginning to feel better.

The doctors said I would recover, although they wanted to monitor my breathing for several more days.

I didn't understand the medical explanations.

I only wanted my dog.

Every time someone entered the room, I asked the same question.

"Max come?""

Finally, my father arrived with a surprise.

Behind him stood Daniel.

And beside Daniel was a familiar golden face.

Max.

I screamed with happiness.

"MAX!""

The dog rushed toward my bed.

He wagged his tail so hard that his entire body moved.

A nurse laughed.

"Careful, big boy!""

Max gently rested his front paws on the floor beside me.

I reached out.

He pushed his nose into my hand.

Then he licked my fingers.

I began crying.

My father sat beside us.

"There's your hero.""

I wrapped both arms around Max's neck.

"My Max!""

Max whined softly.

Then he placed his head against my chest.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

My father watched us with tears in his eyes.

He had spent years believing he was the person responsible for keeping his daughter safe.

But when danger finally came, it had been a dog who refused to leave her side.

Later that afternoon, Marcus asked Daniel to stay behind.

"Tell me what happened after Vanessa left the hospital.""

Daniel opened his notebook.

"She returned to the mansion at approximately eleven. She packed two suitcases.""

"Where did she go?""

"Her lawyer's office.""

"Did she meet anyone?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Yes. A man named Adrian Cole.""

Marcus stood.

"Where?""

"At a private restaurant downtown.""

"Did you get photographs?""

Daniel placed several printed images on the desk.

Marcus recognized the man from the notebook.

Tall.

Dark-haired.

Approximately fifty years old.

He wore a gray suit and carried a black leather briefcase.

In one photograph, Vanessa was handing him a folder.

In another, he was holding her hand.

Marcus stared.

"Are they involved?""

Daniel shook his head.

"We don't know.""

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

Then he noticed something.

Adrian was wearing a silver ring.

A ring with a small black stone.

He had seen it before.

Not on Adrian.

On someone in Sophia's old photographs.

Marcus hurried to his computer and opened the family archive.

He searched through pictures from the charity events Sophia had attended before her death.

There.

A photograph taken at a hospital fundraiser.

Sophia stood beside a man wearing the same ring.

Marcus enlarged the image.

The man was Adrian Cole.

He had known Sophia.

And he had been at the hospital the night she died.

That evening, Richard called.

"I found Dr. Nolan.""

Marcus stood immediately.

"Where?""

"Black Mountain. He's living alone.""

"Can we see him?""

"Tomorrow morning.""

Marcus looked through the window.

"Tomorrow is too late.""

"Marcus, please listen. If he was involved in Sophia's death, he may be dangerous. We need to coordinate with the authorities.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Fine. Tomorrow morning.""

But before ending the call, Richard added something.

"There is another development.""

"What?""

"Adrian Cole has been trying to contact the trust administrator.""

Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.

"Why?""

"He wants to request an emergency review of Lily's inheritance.""

Marcus felt a chill.

"On what grounds?""

"He claims Lily's guardianship is unstable.""

Marcus laughed bitterly.

"The woman who pushed my daughter into a pool wants to challenge my ability to protect her?""

"That's exactly why the timing is suspicious.""

Marcus ended the call.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"Find out where Adrian is staying.""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes, sir.""

"And I want someone watching Vanessa at all times.""

The following morning, Marcus and Richard drove to Black Mountain.

The town was quiet.

Autumn leaves covered the roads.

The mountains were wrapped in a thin layer of mist.

Dr. Nolan lived in a modest house near the edge of town.

When Marcus knocked, nobody answered.

He knocked again.

A curtain moved.

Then the door opened.

An elderly man stood in the doorway.

His hair was gray.

His face was deeply lined.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

"Dr. Nolan?""

The man stared at Marcus.

Then his expression changed.

"Mr. Carter.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"We need to talk about my wife.""

Dr. Nolan looked at Richard.

Then back at Marcus.

"I don't think that's a good idea.""

Marcus held up the photograph.

"Did Sophia visit you on October fourteenth?""

The doctor's hands began trembling.

"Where did you get that?""

"She left it for me.""

Dr. Nolan glanced down the road.

Then he opened the door wider.

"Come inside.""

The living room smelled of old books and coffee.

Dr. Nolan offered them seats.

Neither man accepted.

Marcus placed the photograph on the table.

"Start talking.""

The doctor rubbed his forehead.

"Your wife came to see me because she believed someone was tampering with her medical records.""

Marcus frowned.

"What medical records?""

"She had been experiencing dizziness and severe headaches. She suspected someone was giving her medication she hadn't prescribed.""

Marcus stared.

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you examine her?""

"Yes.""

"And?""

Dr. Nolan looked down.

"Her symptoms suggested she had been exposed to a substance that could cause confusion, weakness, and cardiac complications.""

Marcus felt sick.

"Are you telling me someone poisoned my wife?""

The doctor swallowed.

"I cannot prove that.""

"But you suspected it.""

"Yes.""

Marcus grabbed the edge of the table.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Dr. Nolan looked at him.

"Because I was threatened.""

Silence filled the room.

Richard stepped forward.

"By whom?""

The doctor hesitated.

Then he reached for a drawer.

He removed a small envelope.

"I kept a copy of the original medical report.""

Marcus took it.

The report was dated three days before Sophia's death.

The results showed abnormal levels of a substance that had no legitimate reason to be present in her system.

A handwritten note appeared at the bottom.

Possible exposure. Further investigation recommended.

Marcus looked up.

"Who stopped the investigation?""

Dr. Nolan closed his eyes.

"Your wife's attending physician.""

"Who was?""

The doctor whispered:

"Dr. Samuel Nolan.""

Marcus stared at him.

"You are Dr. Nolan.""

The elderly man nodded.

"I signed the final report, but I didn't write it.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Who did?""

The doctor opened another folder.

Inside was a list of names.

One was circled in red.

Rebecca Hale.

Vanessa's former identity.

Marcus's stomach tightened.

"She worked at the hospital?""

"Not as a doctor. She was employed by a private medical administration contractor. She had access to patient scheduling and certain billing records.""

"How could she influence my wife's treatment?""

"She couldn't prescribe medication. But she could alter appointments, access records, and communicate with staff.""

Marcus stared at the page.

"Who gave her access?""

Dr. Nolan looked toward the window.

"Adrian Cole.""

Marcus stood.

"Tell me about Adrian.""

The doctor sighed.

"He was a financial consultant who had been working with several wealthy patients. He introduced himself as someone who helped families organize their estates.""

"And Sophia?""

"She became suspicious when he began asking questions about her inheritance.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"What happened the night she died?""

Dr. Nolan looked away.

"Your wife arrived at the hospital shortly after midnight. She was confused and struggling to breathe.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

He remembered that night.

He had received a call saying Sophia was unwell.

By the time he arrived, she was unconscious.

He had held her hand.

He had begged her to wake up.

And then a doctor had told him she was gone.

"Did you treat her?""

"I tried.""

"Did you save her?""

The doctor remained silent.

Marcus stepped closer.

"Answer me!""

Dr. Nolan looked at him with tears in his eyes.

"Your wife showed signs of improvement.""

Marcus stopped breathing.

"What?""

"Her heart rate stabilized. She regained consciousness briefly.""

"When?""

"Approximately forty minutes after she arrived.""

Marcus gripped the chair.

"Why wasn't I told?""

The doctor began crying.

"Because someone entered her room.""

"Who?""

"Adrian Cole.""

Marcus felt the world disappear around him.

"What did he do?""

"I wasn't there when it happened. But when I returned, Sophia was unconscious again. Her condition deteriorated rapidly.""

"Did you call the police?""

"No.""

"Why?""

The doctor looked at him.

"Because Adrian told me that if I said anything, my daughter would disappear.""

Marcus stepped backward.

Richard placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Dr. Nolan, do you have evidence?""

The doctor nodded.

He opened the second drawer.

Inside was a small digital recorder.

"I recorded a conversation the following morning.""

Marcus took it.

"Whose conversation?""

"Adrian and Rebecca.""

He pressed play.

A man's voice filled the room.

"Is it finished?""

A woman answered.

"Yes.""

"Did she say anything?""

"No.""

"Good. What about the child?""

The woman laughed softly.

"She's too young to remember anything.""

Marcus recognized the voice immediately.

Vanessa.

Then the man spoke again.

"Make sure the father never discovers what happened.""

The recording ended.

Marcus slowly lowered the device.

He looked at Richard.

"Call the police.""

But before they could leave, Dr. Nolan grabbed Marcus's arm.

"There's something else.""

Marcus turned.

"What?""

The doctor swallowed.

"Your wife didn't die that night.""

Marcus stared.

"What are you saying?""

"I saw her being transferred.""

"Transferred where?""

"I don't know.""

"Who took her?""

The doctor looked terrified.

"Adrian arranged it.""

Marcus's voice became a whisper.

"Where is my wife?""

Dr. Nolan shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Marcus grabbed the back of a chair.

For three years, he had mourned Sophia.

He had buried her.

He had raised their daughter alone.

He had allowed another woman into their home because he believed his wife was gone forever.

Now an elderly physician was telling him that the funeral he remembered might have been a lie.

Richard opened his mouth.

But no words came out.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

It was Daniel.

"Mr. Carter, you need to come back immediately.""

"What's happened?""

"Vanessa has disappeared.""

Marcus stiffened.

"What?""

"She left the mansion an hour ago. Her car was found abandoned near the interstate.""

"Where is she?""

"We don't know.""

Daniel paused.

Then he added:

"There's something else. Someone broke into the hospital room where Lily was staying.""

Marcus's heart stopped.

"Is my daughter safe?""

"Yes, sir. She's with security.""

"Who entered the room?""

Daniel hesitated.

"The person left something behind.""

"What?""

"A photograph.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Of whom?""

Daniel's voice dropped.

"Your first wife, sir.""

May you like

Then he said the words that would change everything.

"Mr. Carter, the photograph was taken yesterday.""
