Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in My Mother's Will

My father watched the recording three times.

The first time, he couldn't believe what he was seeing.

The second time, he became furious.

By the third time, he was no longer confused.

He was afraid.

Not for himself.

For me.

On the screen, Vanessa stood outside his study, holding her phone against her ear.

Her voice was calm.

Almost cheerful.

"If Lily dies, everything becomes much easier.""

A man's voice responded.

The recording wasn't clear enough to identify him.

Vanessa glanced toward the hallway.

"No, Marcus won't suspect anything. He's too busy feeling guilty about Sophia.""

My father's jaw tightened.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

"The inheritance clause won't matter if the child isn't alive.""

The recording ended.

My father remained motionless.

Daniel stood near the office door.

"Sir, I thought you should know.""

My father slowly turned.

"Who else has seen this?""

"Only me.""

"Good. Don't tell anyone.""

Daniel nodded.

My father looked at the screen again.

"Find out who she was speaking to.""

"Yes, sir.""

"And Daniel?""

"Sir?""

"Nobody touches those recordings. Make copies. Secure everything.""

Daniel hesitated.

"Do you want the police?""

My father looked at the image of Vanessa standing beside the pool.

"Yes.""

Then he lowered his voice.

"But first, I need to understand what she meant by my wife's inheritance clause.""

The following morning, my father called his attorney.

His name was Richard Bennett.

He had been my father's lawyer for more than fifteen years and had handled my mother's estate.

Richard arrived at the hospital carrying a leather briefcase.

My father closed the door.

"Richard, I need you to explain Sophia's will.""

Richard looked surprised.

"Why now?""

"Because Vanessa just pushed my daughter into a swimming pool.""

The lawyer's face drained of color.

"What?""

My father played the security footage.

Richard watched without speaking.

When the recording ended, he removed his glasses.

"Marcus, this is attempted murder.""

"I know.""

"Have you contacted the police?""

"Daniel has secured the footage. I want to know what she was talking about first.""

Richard opened his briefcase.

He removed a thick folder.

"Sophia's estate was complicated.""

My father frowned.

"Complicated how?""

"Your wife had inherited substantial property from her grandfather. She also owned shares in several Carter Development subsidiaries.""

My father nodded.

"I know.""

Richard looked directly at him.

"Do you remember the trust she established for Lily?""

"Of course.""

"Do you remember the condition?""

My father went silent.

He remembered signing the documents.

He remembered Sophia explaining that she wanted to protect my future.

But he hadn't thought about the details in years.

Richard opened the folder.

"Sophia established the Lily Carter Protection Trust. It holds a significant portion of her inherited assets, along with shares in three major development companies.""

My father frowned.

"How much?""

Richard turned the page.

"At current valuations, approximately forty-two million dollars.""

My father stared at him.

"Forty-two million?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't I know the exact amount?""

"Because the trust is independently managed.""

Richard continued.

"Sophia's intention was to make sure Lily would never be financially dependent on anyone. Not even you.""

My father looked down at the documents.

"What's the condition Vanessa mentioned?""

Richard hesitated.

Then he turned another page.

"Until Lily turns twenty-five, the trust is administered by an independent trustee. You are the legal guardian, but you cannot access or transfer the principal assets.""

My father nodded.

"That makes sense.""

Richard continued.

"However, Sophia included a special provision. If Lily dies before the trust matures, the assets do not pass directly to you.""

My father looked up.

"Where do they go?""

"To the Sophia Carter Foundation.""

My father leaned forward.

"And who controls that?""

Richard's expression became serious.

"An independent board. But the foundation has a separate succession clause.""

"What clause?""

Richard closed the folder.

"If you remarry, your new spouse can apply for a position on the foundation's advisory council after a specified period. But only if Lily remains alive and the trust's original conditions are respected.""

My father stared at him.

"So Vanessa can't inherit anything if Lily dies.""

"Correct.""

"Then why would she think killing Lily makes things easier?""

Richard didn't answer immediately.

He pulled another document from his briefcase.

"Because there is a second issue.""

My father looked at the paper.

Richard pointed to a section near the bottom.

"Your wife's trust includes a clause that automatically triggers an independent investigation if Lily's death is considered suspicious or if evidence suggests interference by a guardian.""

My father frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"It means that anyone who deliberately harms Lily could lose every potential benefit connected to the foundation. It also triggers a review of any documents signed under suspicious circumstances.""

My father looked at him.

"Why would Vanessa want that?""

Richard removed another sheet.

"Because she has been trying to obtain your signature on a separate property transfer.""

My father's stomach tightened.

"What property transfer?""

Richard placed the document on the desk.

It transferred controlling interests in several Carter Development companies to a private holding company.

The proposed beneficiary was Vanessa Monroe.

My father read the page twice.

Then he looked up.

"How long have you known about this?""

Richard's expression changed.

"Three months.""

My father stood.

"Three months?""

"Sophia's trust manager contacted me after receiving a suspicious inquiry.""

"From Vanessa?""

Richard nodded.

"She wanted to know whether she could challenge the trust.""

My father looked toward the hospital bed.

I was sleeping.

My small hand rested on top of the blanket.

"She was trying to take my daughter's inheritance.""

Richard didn't respond.

My father picked up the document.

"And when she couldn't get it legally, she decided to remove the person standing in her way.""

At the mansion, Vanessa was having a very different morning.

She sat in front of her dressing table, applying lipstick.

Her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

Then answered.

"Yes?""

A man's voice came through.

"Did you get rid of the footage?""

Vanessa stopped applying lipstick.

"No.""

"What do you mean, no?""

"Daniel refused.""

The man swore.

Vanessa put the lipstick down.

"Don't panic.""

"Marcus is going to see it.""

"Then I'll handle Marcus.""

"You told me this would be finished yesterday.""

Vanessa stood and walked toward the bedroom window.

"I said it would be handled.""

"That child survived.""

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

"Unfortunately.""

"Vanessa, you need to listen to me. If the trust investigation begins, we're finished.""

She stared out at the garden.

"I know exactly what's at stake.""

"Then why did you leave the camera recording?""

"I didn't know the camera was working!""

The man lowered his voice.

"Did you recover the original document?""

Vanessa looked toward the bedroom closet.

"No.""

"Then we have another problem.""

She turned.

"What document?""

"The one Sophia left behind.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"That document doesn't exist.""

"It does. I saw it.""

"When?""

"Before she died.""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Who has it?""

"I don't know.""

The man paused.

Then he said something that made Vanessa's blood run cold.

"Ask Evelyn.""

Vanessa slowly lowered the phone.

The housekeeper.

Evelyn had worked for the Carter family long before Vanessa arrived.

She had known Sophia.

She had attended her funeral.

And she had been the first person to reach Lily at the pool.

Vanessa walked to the closet.

She pulled open the bottom drawer.

Inside was a small black box.

She opened it.

There was a photograph of Sophia.

A handwritten note.

And an empty envelope.

Vanessa stared at the envelope.

Then she whispered:

"Where is it?""

Back at the hospital, my father sat beside my bed.

He watched me sleep.

Every few minutes, he touched my forehead to make sure I was still warm.

Richard had left to prepare the legal documents.

The police had been notified.

But my father hadn't yet told anyone about the phone recording.

He wanted to understand how much Vanessa had done.

Then I stirred.

"Daddy?""

He leaned forward.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Water.""

He reached for the cup.

"Here you go.""

I took a small sip.

Then I looked toward the door.

"Vanessa?""

My father stiffened.

"Do you want Vanessa?""

I shook my head.

"Bad lady.""

He gently stroked my hair.

"Why do you say that, princess?""

I stared at the blanket.

"She mad.""

"Was she angry with you?""

I nodded.

"She say no Mommy.""

My father stopped moving.

"What?""

I looked up.

"She say Mommy gone. Lily go too.""

My father's face turned pale.

"Sweetheart, when did she say that?""

I pointed toward the door.

"Outside.""

"At the pool?""

I nodded.

Then I whispered something else.

"She take Mommy paper.""

My father leaned closer.

"What paper?""

I tried to explain using my little hands.

"White paper. Mommy picture. Pink lady take.""

My father looked toward Richard's empty chair.

Then he picked up his phone.

"Daniel, I need you at the hospital.""

An hour later, Evelyn arrived.

She looked exhausted.

Her eyes were red.

My father stood when she entered.

"Evelyn.""

"Mr. Carter.""

"Please sit down.""

She looked at me.

"How is our little girl?""

"She's recovering.""

Evelyn covered her mouth.

"Thank God.""

My father waited until she sat down.

Then he placed a photograph of Vanessa on the table.

"Did you know she was trying to hurt Lily?""

Evelyn looked at the photograph.

Her hands began trembling.

"I suspected something.""

My father leaned forward.

"How long?""

Evelyn looked toward me.

"Since before the wedding.""

My father went still.

"Explain.""

Evelyn took a deep breath.

"Mrs. Carter was frightened of Vanessa. She told me something wasn't right.""

My father's expression changed.

"My wife?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Sophia asked me to watch over Lily if anything happened to her.""

My father looked confused.

"What exactly did she say?""

Evelyn reached into her handbag.

She removed a small photograph.

It showed Sophia holding me as a baby.

On the back was a handwritten message.

Evelyn, if someone ever tries to separate Lily from the people who truly love her, please protect her. I have left something important in your care. Do not give it to anyone unless you are certain they are trying to destroy my daughter.

My father read the message twice.

His hands began to shake.

"What did Sophia leave with you?""

Evelyn looked at the hospital door.

Then she lowered her voice.

"A sealed envelope.""

"Where is it?""

"In my house.""

"What's inside?""

"I never opened it.""

My father stood.

"Why not?""

"Because Sophia made me promise.""

He looked at her.

"Did Vanessa know about it?""

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"She came to my room last month. She searched through my belongings while I was working.""

My father clenched his jaw.

"Did she find it?""

"I don't know.""

Then Evelyn said something that made him stop.

"Mr. Carter, there's another reason Vanessa wanted Lily gone.""

"What reason?""

Evelyn looked at me.

Then back at my father.

"Your wife discovered something about Vanessa before she died.""

My father felt the room grow cold.

"What?""

Evelyn swallowed.

"Mrs. Carter believed Vanessa was connected to the person responsible for her death.""

My father grabbed the edge of the table.

"What did you just say?""

Evelyn began crying.

"I didn't believe her at first. She said someone had been following her. She said there were strange phone calls and that someone had been asking questions about the trust.""

My father stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Sophia begged me not to. She said she had no proof, and she was afraid that whoever was involved would hurt Lily.""

My father sat down slowly.

For years, he had believed Sophia's death was a tragic medical emergency.

But now he remembered something.

The week before she died, Sophia had asked him to change the security arrangements.

She had asked him to install cameras in the house.

She had asked him to keep certain documents away from other people.

He had dismissed her concerns as stress.

And now he wondered whether that had been the biggest mistake of his life.

That evening, Daniel arrived at the hospital with a laptop.

He placed it on the table.

"Mr. Carter, we recovered another recording.""

My father looked at him.

"From the pool?""

"No, sir. From the study.""

Daniel opened a file.

The video showed Vanessa entering the study after my father had left for a business meeting.

She walked directly to his desk.

She opened the bottom drawer.

Removed a folder.

Then she took photographs of several documents.

My father leaned forward.

"Zoom in.""

Daniel enlarged the image.

The folder was labeled:

*SOPHIA CARTER — PRIVATE ESTATE DOCUMENTS.*

Vanessa opened it.

She removed a sheet of paper.

Then she smiled.

A few seconds later, she took out her phone and made a call.

The audio was clear.

"It's done," she said.

A man's voice responded.

"Did you find the letter?""

"No. But I found the trust documents.""

"That isn't what we need.""

Vanessa looked toward the door.

"I know.""

"Without that letter, we can't be certain what Sophia knew.""

Vanessa closed the folder.

"Then we'll find it.""

The man paused.

"Be careful. Marcus is getting suspicious.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Marcus? He believes whatever I tell him.""

Then she said:

"And once the little girl is out of the way, nobody will be able to stop us.""

My father slammed his hand against the table.

"Stop the recording.""

Daniel closed the laptop.

My father stood and walked toward the window.

For several seconds, he stared into the darkness.

Then he turned around.

"Daniel, I want Vanessa watched. I want every account, every phone call, and every property transaction connected to her investigated.""

"Understood, sir.""

"And find the man on that recording.""

Daniel nodded.

But before he could leave, Evelyn spoke.

"Mr. Carter?""

My father turned.

She was holding something.

A small silver key.

"I found this inside Sophia's old jewelry box after the funeral. She told me it belonged with the envelope.""

My father took it.

"What does it open?""

Evelyn looked at him.

"She said the truth was hidden somewhere nobody would think to look.""

My father stared at the key.

Then he remembered something Sophia had once told him.

A locked cabinet in the old library.

A cabinet he hadn't opened since the day she died.

He looked at Daniel.

"Get the car.""

Then Evelyn whispered one final thing.

"Mr. Carter, there's something else. Sophia didn't trust Vanessa because she recognized her.""

My father froze.

"Recognized her from where?""

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"From the hospital.""

And when she finally explained what she meant, my father realized that Vanessa hadn't entered his life by chance.

She had known his family long before the charity fundraiser.

She had known Sophia.

She had known about the inheritance.

And she had been waiting for the perfect opportunity to enter the Carter mansion.

But why had Sophia recognized her?

And what was inside the locked cabinet?

May you like

My father held the little silver key tightly.

For the first time, he understood that the woman who had nearly killed his daughter might also be connected to the death of his wife.
