Chapter 9: The Son Behind the Wall

The chapel door opened three inches.

Cold air slipped through the gap.

Richard stared at the darkness beyond it.

“Dad?””

No answer.

He pulled the door wider.

Nobody stood there.

Only an empty corridor stretching toward the main house.

Charlotte let out a shaky breath.

“What was that?””

Richard didn't answer.

He looked down at his phone.

The last message was still on the screen.

*Your mother lied about Matthew.*

He turned toward Jonathan.

“Did you hear that?””

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes.””

“So it wasn't in my head.””

“No.””

Richard looked at the documents in his hands.

“Then someone is here.””

A quiet click came from behind them.

The chapel door slammed shut.

Charlotte screamed.

Richard spun around.

The steel box had moved.

It sat on the altar now.

Neither of them had touched it.

Jonathan whispered, “We need to leave.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

“Richard.””

“We came here for answers.””

“We found enough.””

Richard looked at the photograph of his father.

“No. We found evidence.””

He picked up the old photograph again.

His father stood on one side.

Damien Bennett stood on the other.

Between them was a young woman.

Richard stared at her.

He didn't recognize her.

Jonathan did.

His face changed.

“That's Clara.””

“Who?””

“Your father's secretary.””

Richard frowned.

“Why is she in a family photograph?””

Jonathan pointed toward the woman.

“Because she wasn't his secretary.””

Richard looked closer.

On the woman's wrist was a hospital bracelet.

The number matched the bracelet found in Elena's envelope.

Richard's pulse jumped.

“That's impossible.””

Jonathan shook his head.

“Nothing about this family has been impossible for a long time.””

Richard turned the photograph over.

A sentence had been written in faded ink.

*WHEN THE FIRST SON DISAPPEARS, THE SECOND BECOMES THE HEIR.*

Richard felt a chill.

“The first son.””

“Matthew.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“But what does that have to do with Noah?””

Jonathan looked at the stack of records.

“Everything.””

He pulled out another file.

*MATTHEW BENNETT — TRANSFER RECORD*

Richard opened it.

The first page was a hospital record from seventeen years before Daniel's birth.

The second page showed an adoption placement.

The third had been sealed.

Richard tore open the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A newborn.

A woman holding him.

The same woman from the earlier photograph.

Clara.

Richard stared.

“That's my brother.””

Jonathan nodded.

“But look at the date.””

Richard did.

The baby had not been declared dead.

He had been transferred to a private residence.

*WARD FAMILY PROPERTY.*

Richard stopped.

“Arthur.””

Jonathan swallowed.

“Yes.””

Richard turned another page.

There was a handwritten note.

*Child placed under temporary guardianship. Identity to remain confidential.*

Below it:

*Reason: succession protection.*

Richard felt sick.

“So Matthew wasn't dead.””

“No.””

“Where is he?””

Jonathan pointed to the last page.

Richard read the address.

His heart stopped.

It was the same address where Daniel had lived.

“No.””

Jonathan nodded.

“They were in the same house.””

Richard stared at him.

“My sons grew up under the same roof.””

“Without knowing you.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Years.

Seventeen years.

Two sons.

Both hidden.

Both raised by people connected to his father's trust.

The realization was almost unbearable.

Then the chapel speakers crackled.

A man's voice came through.

“Richard.””

Charlotte jumped.

Richard looked toward the ceiling.

The voice continued.

“You always were the curious one.””

Richard stepped toward the speaker.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“My father died.””

A soft laugh.

“Yes.””

“Then stop hiding behind his voice.””

The laughter stopped.

Silence.

Then another voice came through.

Younger.

“Good.””

Richard froze.

Daniel.

“That's what I wanted to hear.””

The speakers clicked off.

Richard looked at Jonathan.

“That was him.””

Jonathan nodded.

“Where?””

A hidden panel in the chapel wall suddenly opened.

Charlotte stared.

“How did that—”

Richard was already moving.

Behind the panel was a narrow passage.

At the end stood a steel door.

Richard grabbed the handle.

Locked.

A small screen beside it lit up.

*IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED.*

Then:

*ENTER FULL NAME OF FIRST BENNETT SON.*

Richard's fingers froze.

Jonathan whispered,

“Matthew.””

Richard entered it.

The screen flashed red.

*INCORRECT.*

Charlotte frowned.

“Then what's the answer?””

Richard stared at the question.

*FIRST BENNETT SON.*

Not oldest.

Not surviving.

First.

He remembered the trust records.

The family had always spoken about bloodlines.

About succession.

About first sons.

Then he looked at the birth certificate.

He and Matthew had been born twelve minutes apart.

But there was something he had overlooked.

Their names had not appeared in the same order.

Richard looked at the document again.

*MATTHEW BENNETT — BORN 11:42 PM*

*RICHARD BENNETT — BORN 11:54 PM*

Richard's breath caught.

“Matthew was older.””

Jonathan nodded.

“So?””

Richard looked at the steel door.

“So I'm not the first son.””

He entered:

*MATTHEW BENNETT.*

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Beyond it was a small room.

A desk.

Three monitors.

Stacks of files.

Photographs covering one wall.

Richard stepped inside.

His breath stopped.

The photographs were of Noah.

Everywhere.

At school.

At the park.

Eating ice cream.

Sleeping.

Walking beside Charlotte.

Richard's hands shook.

“He's been watched.””

Jonathan walked toward the monitors.

“This isn't just surveillance.””

Richard turned.

“What?””

Jonathan pointed.

Every photograph had a date.

Some were years old.

One showed Noah at age three.

Another showed him at four.

Another at five.

The most recent had been taken that morning.

Richard stared.

“Someone has been tracking him since birth.””

Charlotte's voice trembled.

“Why?””

A monitor turned on.

Daniel appeared.

This time there was no distortion.

No darkness.

Just his face.

“Because Noah was the key.””

Richard stared at the screen.

“Where are you?””

Daniel ignored the question.

“You found the room.””

“Yes.””

“Then you found Matthew.””

Richard looked around.

“I found records.””

Daniel nodded.

“That's all they ever leave behind.””

“What are you talking about?””

“Proof after the damage is done.””

Richard stepped closer to the screen.

“Tell me where Noah is.””

Daniel looked down.

“Safe.””

Richard's voice hardened.

“Bring him back.””

“I will.””

“When?””

“When you understand why I took him.””

Richard shook his head.

“You don't get to decide when I see my grandson.””

Daniel's expression tightened.

“Your grandson would have been dead tonight.””

Richard froze.

“Who ordered it?””

Daniel looked at the camera.

“Margaret didn't.””

“Then who?””

“The person standing outside this room.””

Richard turned.

Nothing.

He spun back.

“What?””

Daniel continued.

“Look behind you.””

Richard slowly turned.

A door opened at the end of the corridor.

A man stepped through.

Gray hair.

Black coat.

A familiar face.

Richard's father.

Richard froze.

No.

It was not possible.

The man stopped beneath the hallway light.

His face was older than the photograph.

But unmistakable.

Richard couldn't speak.

Jonathan whispered:

“Damien.””

Richard's eyes widened.

“That's Damien?””

Jonathan nodded.

“Your father's older brother.””

The man smiled.

“You finally found me.””

Richard stared.

“You're supposed to be dead.””

“So was Matthew.””

The words struck like lightning.

Richard stepped forward.

“You're the one behind all of this.””

Damien shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Damien looked past him.

Toward the screen.

Toward Daniel.

“You both made the same mistake.””

Richard frowned.

“What mistake?””

“Thinking the Bennett family was the enemy.””

Damien reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small photograph.

He handed it to Richard.

It showed two babies.

Side by side.

One was labeled *Matthew*.

The other *Richard*.

But beneath the names was a third handwritten word.

*THIRD.*

Richard's eyes widened.

“What's that?””

Damien looked at him.

“The child your father never told you about.””

Richard stared.

“There's another one?””

Damien nodded.

“A child born between Matthew and Daniel.””

Richard's pulse raced.

“That's impossible.””

Damien gave him a sad smile.

“You keep saying that.””

He pointed toward the photograph.

“Your father had three sons.””

Richard looked at the picture again.

Then toward the screen.

Daniel was staring at him.

And beside Daniel appeared another young man.

Same eyes.

Same dark hair.

Same Bennett jaw.

Richard couldn't move.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Dad…”

The other young man looked directly into the camera.

“…meet your first son.””

The screen went black.

May you like

Then one final message appeared:

*MATTHEW BENNETT IS COMING HOME.*
