Chapter 3: Elena’s Last Message

“Richard, if you’re hearing this, they already know about the baby.””

Elena’s voice filled the dining room.

It was soft.

Tired.

Nothing like the confident woman Richard remembered from six years ago.

Noah stopped moving in his arms.

Charlotte covered her mouth.

Jonathan stared at the screen as if it had just accused him of a crime.

Margaret whispered, “Turn it off.””

Richard didn't move.

Elena continued.

“I don’t know how much time I have left. I don't know who I can trust anymore. But I need you to listen carefully.””

The room seemed to shrink around them.

Richard stepped closer to the wall display.

Elena appeared on the screen, sitting in what looked like a small motel room. Her hair was pulled back. Her face was pale. A bruise darkened one side of her jaw.

Richard’s breath caught.

He had never seen that photograph.

Never known she was hurt.

Elena looked directly into the camera.

“Richard, Noah is your son. I need you to believe that. Whatever they tell you, whatever papers they show you, whatever story Margaret gives you—believe the DNA.””

Margaret turned away.

Charlotte looked at her.

“Mom?””

Margaret didn't respond.

Elena continued.

“But there is something else.””

She hesitated.

For a moment, her eyes dropped toward something off-camera.

Then she whispered:

“Jonathan knows.””

Richard slowly turned.

Jonathan remained frozen beside the fireplace.

The recording continued.

“He knows what happened in the delivery room. He knows why the paternity records were altered. And he knows why Margaret wants Noah removed from the trust.””

Jonathan's face crumpled.

Richard’s voice came out low.

“What did you do?””

Jonathan shook his head.

“I didn't—”

“Not yet,” Richard said.

“You don't get to explain yet.””

He faced the screen again.

Elena was crying now.

“I wanted to tell Richard everything that night. But Margaret found out.””

Her breathing became uneven.

“She said if I went to Richard, she would make sure Noah disappeared.””

Charlotte gasped.

“No…”

Elena wiped her cheek.

“She told me she would have me declared unstable. She had already spoken to the doctor. She had everything arranged.””

Richard looked at Margaret.

“You knew.””

Margaret’s lips trembled.

Elena continued.

“I ran because I was trying to protect my son.””

The screen flickered.

Then Elena reached for something.

A small envelope.

She held it up to the camera.

“Inside this envelope is the proof.””

Richard stepped forward.

“What proof?””

Elena looked directly into the lens.

“The original hospital bracelet.””

Richard stopped breathing.

“The one they replaced.””

The image froze for a second before the recording resumed.

“I kept it because it has a number on it. The number matters. That number leads to the second record.””

Margaret suddenly shouted, “Stop it!””

Richard spun around.

“Why?””

“Because it's over!””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“It isn't.””

Margaret rushed toward the console.

Richard blocked her.

She looked up at him.

“Please.””

It was the first time Richard had ever heard fear in her voice.

Not anger.

Not authority.

Fear.

“What did you do to Elena?”” he asked.

Margaret stared at him.

“I was protecting this family.””

“You destroyed her life.””

“I protected you.””

“You lied to me.””

“I protected you from a woman who would have ruined everything.””

Charlotte stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Margaret looked at her daughter.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

Margaret looked at Jonathan.

He lowered his head.

That was all Charlotte needed.

“You both know.””

Neither answered.

Charlotte's voice cracked.

“You both know something about Noah.””

Richard placed Noah gently on the chair behind him.

The boy looked frightened.

“Stay here, buddy.””

“But Grandpa—”

“I'll be right there.””

Richard crouched.

“Promise.””

Noah nodded.

Richard stood.

Then he faced Jonathan.

“You're my brother.””

Jonathan swallowed.

“Yes.””

“You've been sitting at this table every Christmas.””

“Yes.””

“You've watched that boy be treated like he was nothing.””

Jonathan closed his eyes.

“I know.””

Richard walked toward him.

“You watched Margaret put him against the wall.””

Jonathan's voice broke.

“I know.””

“You watched me wonder whether I was allowed to love my own son.””

“I know!””

Jonathan shouted the words through tears.

The room fell silent.

Jonathan covered his face.

“I know.””

Richard stared at him.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Jonathan slowly lowered his hands.

“I was there.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“At the hospital?””

Jonathan nodded.

“The night Noah was born.””

Charlotte whispered, “Why?””

Jonathan looked at her.

“Because Margaret called me.””

“And?””

“She told me Elena was dangerous.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“She wasn't.””

“I know that now.””

“When did you know?””

Jonathan swallowed.

“Before Noah was taken home.””

Richard moved closer.

“What did you see?””

Jonathan looked toward the frozen image of Elena.

“She was awake.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

“She was awake after the delivery. She wasn't unconscious. She wasn't confused.””

He took a shaking breath.

“She was asking for Richard.””

Margaret said quietly, “Jonathan.””

He ignored her.

“She kept asking where you were.””

Richard whispered, “I was told she refused to see me.””

Jonathan shook his head.

“She never said that.””

Richard’s chest tightened.

“What happened?””

Jonathan glanced at Margaret.

“She walked into the room.””

“Who?””

“Your mother.””

Margaret's expression hardened.

“She told Elena the baby had complications.””

Charlotte stared at her.

“There were no complications, were there?””

Jonathan shook his head.

“No.””

Richard's face went cold.

“She lied.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Jonathan hesitated.

“Because the trust had a problem.””

Richard frowned.

“What problem?””

Jonathan stepped toward the display.

“The trust was signed before Noah was born. It had a clause.””

“What clause?””

“Any biological child of yours would automatically inherit a controlling share of Bennett Holdings.””

Richard looked at him.

“How much?””

“Thirty-five percent.””

Charlotte stared.

“That’s millions.””

“More now,” Jonathan whispered.

Margaret finally spoke.

“And it wasn't just the company.””

Everyone turned to her.

She looked exhausted.

“It was control of the trust itself.””

Richard shook his head.

“So you stole my son’s inheritance.””

“No.””

Margaret's voice trembled.

“I tried to prevent a seventeen-year-old mistake from destroying an entire family.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Seventeen-year-old mistake?””

Margaret went silent.

Jonathan looked at Richard.

“She wasn't talking about Noah.””

Richard stared.

“Then who?””

Jonathan didn't answer.

The family display chimed.

Another file opened.

This one was much older.

*BENNETT TRUST — ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY HISTORY*

A name appeared.

*JONATHAN BENNETT.*

Richard stared.

Jonathan closed his eyes.

Then another line appeared.

*BENEFICIARY STATUS: CONDITIONAL.*

Richard read it slowly.

“Conditional on what?””

Jonathan said nothing.

Richard turned to him.

“On what?””

Jonathan finally answered.

“On you having no biological children.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Charlotte stepped back.

“So that's why.””

Richard looked at Margaret.

“You needed me childless.””

Margaret's eyes filled.

“I needed the trust protected.””

“You needed Jonathan to keep the inheritance.””

Margaret shook her head.

“That wasn't the original plan.””

“What was?””

Margaret stared at Noah.

“The original plan was for you to marry Charlotte's mother, stay childless, and let Jonathan manage the trust after you died.””

Richard laughed once.

It was empty.

“You planned my entire life.””

“No.””

“You planned my family.””

Margaret said nothing.

“And when Elena became pregnant?””

“We panicked.””

Richard’s voice dropped.

“So you lied.””

“Yes.””

“You forged records.””

“Yes.””

“You had Elena committed.””

Margaret looked away.

“Yes.””

Charlotte stepped toward her mother.

“And then you told everyone she abandoned Noah.””

Margaret's shoulders shook.

“I had no choice.””

“There is always a choice,” Charlotte whispered.

A quiet sound came from behind them.

Noah.

“Grandpa?””

Richard turned.

The little boy was standing beside the tiny chair.

He held something in his hand.

A small brown envelope.

Richard stared.

“Where did you get that?””

Noah looked toward the wall display.

“It was under my chair.””

Richard crossed the room.

He took the envelope.

On the front, in faded handwriting, were four words.

*For Richard. From Elena.*

Richard's fingers trembled.

He opened it.

Inside was a hospital bracelet.

And a folded note.

He unfolded the paper.

The first line made his blood run cold.

*Richard, I know you think Noah is your only son.*

He stopped.

Charlotte leaned closer.

“What does it say?””

Richard read the next sentence.

His face went completely white.

*He isn't.*

And beneath those words was another name.

One Richard hadn't heard in seventeen years.

“There's another child,” he whispered.

Jonathan looked up sharply.

Margaret staggered backward.

May you like

And for the first time that night, she was no longer pretending to be afraid.

She looked terrified.
