Chapter 7: The Brother in the Shadows

Richard stared at the screen.

For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.

“No.””

The word escaped before he could stop it.

“Noah, look at me.””

The little boy’s face filled the display.

His eyes were red.

His cheeks were wet.

But he wasn't crying anymore.

That frightened Richard more.

A six-year-old child shouldn't look that calm after being taken from his home.

“Noah,” Richard said again, forcing his voice to stay steady.

“Tell me what happened.””

The camera shifted slightly.

The room around Noah remained dark.

A single lamp burned somewhere behind him.

“I woke up because someone was talking.””

Richard pressed his hand against the screen.

“Who?””

Noah looked away.

“Daniel.””

Everyone in the room froze.

Charlotte shook her head.

“No.””

Jonathan stepped closer.

“Richard…”

Richard didn't move.

“Noah, did Daniel hurt you?””

The boy immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Richard's heartbeat slowed slightly.

“Did he touch you?””

“No.””

“Did he scare you?””

Noah hesitated.

Then he whispered:

“At first.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Where is he?””

Noah looked behind the camera.

“He’s here.””

A shadow moved.

Then the voice came.

“You always ask the wrong questions, Richard.””

Richard stepped back.

He knew that voice.

It was Daniel.

His son.

The child he had lost.

The child who had just taken his grandson.

Richard's voice broke.

“Daniel.””

The camera moved.

A young man stepped into view.

Seventeen years old.

The same eyes.

The same face.

The same expression Richard had seen in his own mirror his entire life.

For a second, Richard couldn't see a stranger.

He saw himself.

At seventeen.

Lost.

Angry.

Alone.

Daniel looked at him.

Neither spoke.

Then Daniel said:

“You look older than I imagined.””

Richard swallowed.

“I imagined you too.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“No, you didn't.””

The words cut deeper than Richard expected.

Daniel looked at Noah.

“You imagined a baby.””

Richard said nothing.

“You never imagined me.””

The silence that followed was worse than any accusation.

Richard looked down.

“You're right.””

Everyone stared at him.

Even Margaret.

Richard faced the screen.

“I should have known.””

Daniel's expression didn't change.

“You should have looked.””

“I tried.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You believed them.””

Richard felt the truth of those words.

Because he had.

For seventeen years, he had accepted explanations.

Accepted documents.

Accepted silence.

He had told himself he was protecting everyone.

But the person who paid the price was Daniel.

“I was wrong,” Richard said.

Daniel looked surprised.

Just for a second.

Then the anger returned.

“That's all?””

“No.””

Richard stepped closer.

“I don't know how to fix seventeen years.””

Daniel looked away.

“Neither do I.””

Noah looked between them.

“Daniel?””

The young man turned.

“Yes?””

“Are you really my brother?””

Daniel's face softened.

“Yes.””

Noah smiled faintly.

“Then why did you take me?””

Daniel didn't answer.

That hesitation told Richard everything.

Daniel wasn't the monster they thought he was.

He was hurt.

Confused.

Desperate.

But that didn't mean he hadn't done something wrong.

“Daniel,” Richard said carefully, “bring Noah home.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because if I do, they’ll find him.””

“Who?””

Daniel glanced away from the camera.

“The people who killed Elena.””

The room went silent.

Margaret whispered:

“Daniel…”

The young man looked toward the screen.

“You're still here?””

Richard turned.

Margaret looked down.

Daniel continued.

“She was part of it.””

Richard felt sick.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You still defend her?””

Richard stared at Margaret.

He didn't know anymore.

He didn't know who was lying.

Who was telling the truth.

Who had protected him.

Who had destroyed him.

“Daniel,” Richard said, “tell me everything.””

The young man sat beside Noah.

“Six months ago, I found my adoption file.””

Richard listened.

“The file was fake.””

Jonathan lowered his head.

Daniel continued.

“My parents weren't my biological parents. They knew that. They signed papers because they were paid to.””

Richard's stomach turned.

“Paid by who?””

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“Her.””

Margaret whispered:

“No.””

Daniel laughed.

“You really thought I wouldn't find out?””

Richard turned toward Margaret.

“Did you pay them?””

Margaret didn't answer.

That was enough.

Charlotte stepped away from her mother.

“How could you?””

Margaret's eyes filled.

“I was trying to keep him safe.””

“You keep saying that.””

Charlotte's voice shook.

“But every person you hurt was someone you claimed to protect.””

Margaret looked at the floor.

Daniel continued.

“When I found out, I searched for Elena.””

Richard froze.

“You found her?””

Daniel nodded.

“I found her records.””

His voice became quieter.

“She spent the last years of her life trying to contact you.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“I never received anything.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked toward the camera.

“Because every letter went through the Bennett legal office.””

Richard's eyes moved to the empty space where Arthur had stood.

“Arthur.””

Daniel nodded.

“He destroyed them.””

Jonathan looked sick.

“He worked for us.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“No.””

“He worked for himself.””

Richard looked at Noah.

“Then why take Noah?””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Because Noah was next.””

Richard froze.

“What?””

Daniel leaned closer.

“After Elena died, I found a second list.””

“What list?””

“Children.””

The room went cold.

Daniel continued.

“The Bennett family has been removing problems for generations.””

Charlotte whispered:

“What problems?””

Daniel looked directly at Richard.

“Children who threatened the inheritance.””

Richard felt a wave of anger.

“Noah is six.””

“I know.””

“He's innocent.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because I found his name.””

Richard felt his heart stop.

“Where?””

“In the trust records.””

A document appeared on the screen beside Daniel.

Richard recognized the format.

The family trust.

Daniel pointed.

“Look.””

Richard moved closer.

The screen enlarged.

A hidden section appeared.

*SUCCESSION RISK ASSESSMENT*

Below it:

*NOAH BENNETT — HIGH PRIORITY*

Richard's hands shook.

“High priority?””

Daniel nodded.

“Meaning?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Meaning someone wanted him removed.””

Charlotte covered her mouth.

Richard looked at Margaret.

“Who?””

Margaret didn't speak.

Daniel answered.

“Not her.””

Everyone turned.

Richard frowned.

“What?””

“Margaret lied. She manipulated. She destroyed lives.””

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“But she didn't order Noah's removal.””

Margaret looked shocked.

“Why are you defending me?””

“I'm not.””

Daniel looked back at Richard.

“I'm telling the truth.””

Richard stared.

“Then who did?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“The person who has controlled this family longer than any of you realize.””

The video suddenly glitched.

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

“What happened?””

A noise came from somewhere outside his room.

A door opening.

Daniel stood.

“No.””

Richard heard panic in his son's voice.

“Daniel?””

The young man grabbed Noah's hand.

“Listen to me.””

Richard stepped closer.

“What?””

“Do not trust anyone who comes to get him.””

Richard frowned.

“Why?””

“Because the person who found me…”

The camera shook.

Daniel looked toward the door.

“…is the same person who found Noah.””

A shadow appeared beneath the doorway.

Someone was standing outside.

Daniel whispered:

“They’re here.””

Richard shouted:

“Daniel, get away from the door!””

The handle moved.

Daniel pushed Noah behind him.

Then the door opened.

The video cut.

The screen went black.

For five seconds, nobody moved.

Then the family display turned back on.

A new message appeared.

Not from Daniel.

Not from the kidnapper.

From the trust system.

*EMERGENCY SUCCESSION PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.*

Richard stared.

A final line appeared beneath it.

*PRIMARY BENEFICIARY CHANGE: APPROVED.*

His blood went cold.

Because the new beneficiary wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Noah.

It wasn't Jonathan.

It wasn't anyone alive.

May you like

The name appearing on the screen was:

*MARGARET BENNETT.*
