Chapter 8: The Name Beneath the Name
Richard stared at the display.
*PRIMARY BENEFICIARY CHANGE: APPROVED.*
*MARGARET BENNETT.*
His first reaction was disbelief.
His second was anger.
His third was something worse.
Recognition.
He had seen that name on too many documents.
Too many lies.
Too many locked records.
But this time, Margaret wasn't standing at the center of the conspiracy.
She was standing beside him, staring at the screen as if she had just discovered her own execution date.
“I didn't do that,” she whispered.
Richard turned.
“Then who did?””
“I don't know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
Margaret shook her head rapidly.
“No. I expect you to understand that whoever controls the trust can make it look like I approved anything.””
Jonathan stepped toward the display.
“The authorization key.””
Richard looked at him.
“What about it?””
“This system doesn't accept ordinary passwords.””
Jonathan pointed at a line beneath Margaret's name.
“Look.””
Richard leaned closer.
The authorization field contained a digital signature.
But beneath it was another identifier.
A sequence of letters and numbers.
Jonathan's face tightened.
“That isn't Margaret's key.””
Richard looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because I saw it before.””
“Where?””
Jonathan hesitated.
“In your father's private files.””
The house suddenly felt colder.
Richard stared at the display.
“Whose key is it?””
Jonathan whispered,
“Daniel's.””
Charlotte looked between them.
“But Daniel is seventeen.””
Jonathan nodded.
“I know.””
Richard stepped back.
“So my son activated the trust.””
“Yes.””
“And changed the beneficiary to Margaret.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Jonathan didn't answer.
Margaret suddenly spoke.
“Because he wants you to blame me.””
Richard turned toward her.
“You're saying Daniel is framing you?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I'm saying someone is using Daniel's identity.””
Jonathan frowned.
“That would require access to his biometric signature.””
Margaret looked at him.
“Exactly.””
Charlotte's face hardened.
“Then who has access to it?””
Nobody answered.
Richard's phone vibrated.
A new message.
*DON'T TRUST THE SCREEN.*
Richard looked at the words.
Then another appeared.
*TRUST THE ORIGINAL PAPER.*
He immediately looked toward the basement.
The old trust records.
The handwritten ledger.
The hospital bracelet.
Something there.
Something real.
“Jonathan.””
“What?””
“Where did my father keep the original trust?””
Jonathan's expression changed.
“In the old vault.””
Richard grabbed his coat.
“Take me there.””
Margaret moved after them.
“No.””
Richard stopped.
“You're staying here.””
“I know what vault you're talking about.””
“And?””
“Your father didn't keep the trust there.””
Richard frowned.
“Where, then?””
Margaret looked toward the family portraits.
“In the chapel.””
The old Bennett chapel stood at the far end of the estate.
Richard hadn't entered it in years.
It had always felt more like a monument than a place of worship.
Dark wood.
Stone floors.
Stained-glass windows bearing the Bennett crest.
He grabbed a flashlight.
Charlotte followed.
“I’m coming.””
“No.””
“Dad, Noah is missing.””
“I know.””
“And you're going into a hidden vault.””
“I know.””
“So I'm coming.””
Richard stared at her.
Then nodded.
Jonathan followed them.
Margaret remained in the hallway.
“You'll need this.””
Richard turned.
She held out a brass key.
He took it.
Their fingers touched.
For the first time that night, Margaret looked directly into his eyes.
“Richard.””
He waited.
“I never wanted Noah dead.””
Richard said nothing.
“I wanted him hidden.””
“From whom?””
She looked frightened.
“From the family.””
“What family?””
She whispered,
“The ones who don't use our last name anymore.””
Then she walked away.
Richard stared after her.
Charlotte frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“I don't know.””
Jonathan quietly said,
“I think I do.””
Richard turned.
Jonathan looked at the dark staircase leading toward the chapel.
“The Bennett family wasn't the beginning.””
Richard waited.
Jonathan continued.
“Your father belonged to another family before he became a Bennett.””
Richard felt a chill.
“What family?””
Jonathan didn't answer.
He opened the chapel door.
The hinges groaned.
Dust floated through the flashlight beam.
At the front of the room stood an old stone altar.
Behind it was a huge stained-glass window.
A red rose surrounded by six black petals.
Richard stared.
“I've never seen that symbol.””
Jonathan looked at it.
“Your father told me never to ask about it.””
“Why?””
“Because the people who use it don't forgive questions.””
Richard stepped toward the altar.
He searched beneath the stone.
Nothing.
Then Charlotte noticed something.
“Dad.””
She pointed to the floor.
Six small metal circles were set into the stone.
Each bore a letter.
R.
I.
C.
H.
A.
R.
Richard frowned.
“That's my name.””
Jonathan shook his head.
“No.””
Richard looked at him.
“That's your father's code.””
Richard placed his hand on the first circle.
Nothing.
Then Charlotte noticed a tiny inscription.
*BLOOD OPENS WHAT BLOOD BUILT.*
Richard stared.
“I need a blood sample.””
Jonathan shook his head.
“Not necessarily.””
He looked at Richard's hand.
“You're the blood.””
Richard pressed his palm against the metal.
A sharp click sounded.
The floor shifted.
Charlotte stepped back.
A section of stone opened.
Beneath it was a steel box.
Richard lifted it out.
The brass key Margaret had given him fit perfectly.
He turned it.
The box opened.
Inside was a stack of documents tied with black ribbon.
Richard lifted the first.
*BENNETT FAMILY SUCCESSION — ORIGINAL AGREEMENT*
The next:
*CHILDREN OF THE LINE — RESTRICTED*
Then:
*PATERNITY SUPPRESSION AUTHORIZATION*
Richard's pulse increased.
He opened it.
There were names.
Dates.
Payments.
Hospitals.
Adoption agencies.
Children.
Too many children.
Charlotte stared over his shoulder.
“How many?””
Richard kept turning pages.
“Twenty-three.””
Jonathan swallowed.
“What?””
“Twenty-three children.””
Charlotte's face went pale.
“Twenty-three?””
Richard nodded.
“Records of children connected to the Bennett line.””
Charlotte looked at the names.
“Where are they now?””
Richard shook his head.
“Some were adopted.””
He turned another page.
“Some were sent away.””
Another.
“Some…”
He stopped.
Charlotte whispered, “What?””
Richard couldn't answer.
At the bottom of the page were three words.
*STATUS: DECEASED.*
Charlotte covered her mouth.
“No.””
Jonathan stepped closer.
Then his eyes locked on one specific name.
He whispered,
“Richard.””
Richard followed his gaze.
The name was underlined.
*ELENA VALE.*
Beside it was a date.
The same date she had supposedly died of an overdose.
But below that was another note.
*CAUSE OF DEATH — RECLASSIFIED.*
Richard felt sick.
“Reclassified?””
Jonathan looked at the document.
“Someone changed the cause.””
“From what?””
Jonathan's eyes widened.
“It says here the original report was sealed.””
“Who sealed it?””
Jonathan turned the page.
Richard read the signature.
His heart stopped.
*ARTHUR WARD.*
But beneath Arthur's name was another signature.
One Richard had never seen.
*DAMIEN BENNETT.*
Charlotte frowned.
“Who is Damien?””
Richard stared at the name.
“I don't know.””
Jonathan slowly shook his head.
“You do.””
Richard looked at him.
“What?””
Jonathan swallowed.
“He was your father's older brother.””
Richard stared.
“My uncle Damien died before I was born.””
“That’s what we were told.””
Richard's voice became quiet.
“Was he dead?””
Jonathan looked at the page.
“No.””
Silence.
Richard turned another document.
A photograph fell out.
An older man stood beside Richard's father.
The same black rose symbol appeared behind them.
On the back of the photograph was one sentence.
*Damien was never meant to inherit.*
Richard looked up.
“Why?””
Jonathan answered softly.
“Because he wasn't the eldest son.””
Richard froze.
“Who was?””
Jonathan stared at him.
Richard felt the answer before he heard it.
“Me?””
“No.””
Jonathan shook his head.
“Your father had another son.””
Charlotte whispered,
“Another son?””
Richard looked at the documents.
His fingers moved faster.
Birth records.
Hospital forms.
Trust amendments.
Then he found it.
A birth certificate.
*MALE CHILD — RICHARD ANTHONY BENNETT.*
Richard stared.
“That’s me.””
Jonathan pointed to the next page.
Richard stopped.
*SECOND MALE CHILD — MATTHEW BENNETT.*
He read the date.
Same hospital.
Same day.
Only twelve minutes apart.
Twins.
Richard's knees nearly buckled.
“I had a brother.””
Jonathan nodded.
“My father never told me.””
“He was declared stillborn.””
Richard looked at the document.
“But was he?””
Jonathan didn't answer.
A noise came from behind them.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Richard grabbed the flashlight and turned.
The chapel door was closed.
Charlotte whispered,
“We're not alone.””
Another footstep.
Closer.
Jonathan moved in front of Charlotte.
Richard held the documents against his chest.
“Who's there?””
No answer.
The brass handle began to turn.
Richard's phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
*NOW YOU KNOW ABOUT MATTHEW.*
His blood ran cold.
Another message followed.
*ASK YOUR MOTHER WHAT SHE DID WITH HIM.*
Richard stared at Margaret's key in his hand.
Then he heard a voice from the other side of the chapel door.
A man's voice.
Old.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Richard.””
His breath caught.
He knew that voice.
It belonged to someone who had supposedly been dead for twelve years.
His father.
“Open the door, son.””
Charlotte grabbed Richard's arm.
“Dad…”
Richard stared at the handle.
It slowly turned again.
And then the voice whispered:
“Your mother lied about Daniel.””
A pause.
“She lied about Elena.””
Another pause.
“And she lied about me.””
The door began to open.
“Most importantly…”
May you like
A shadow stretched across the chapel floor.
“…she lied about Matthew.””
