Chapter 2: The Date on the Screen
For three full seconds, nobody moved.
The date beneath Noah’s name glowed against the wall in cold white letters.
*DECEMBER 24, 2020.*
Richard stared at it.
His stomach dropped.
That was the date.
The date he had been forbidden to remember out loud.
The date Margaret had told him to bury forever.
Noah shifted in his arms.
“Grandpa?””
Richard tightened his hold.
“I’m here.””
Margaret stepped toward the display.
“Turn it off.””
Her voice cracked.
Richard looked at her.
“What?””
“I said turn it off.””
“I didn’t activate it.””
“You own the system. You can shut it down.””
Richard slowly shook his head.
“Not this record.””
Margaret’s eyes flashed.
“You don't understand what you're looking at.””
“Then explain it.””
She said nothing.
Charlotte rose from her chair.
“What happened on December twenty-fourth?””
Margaret looked at her.
“Nothing.””
Richard gave a humorless laugh.
“Then why are you afraid?””
“I am not afraid.””
“You are.””
The room fell silent again.
Richard walked closer to the display with Noah still in his arms.
The document expanded.
A series of legal entries appeared beneath the registration.
*PATERNITY CONFIRMATION — COMPLETED.*
*GUARDIANSHIP TRANSFER — VOIDED.*
*HEIRSHIP PROTECTION — ACTIVE.*
Then another line appeared.
*ORIGINAL FAMILY TRUST CLAUSE: CHILD SHALL NOT BE DISINHERITED BY MATERNAL INTERFERENCE.*
Charlotte frowned.
“Maternal interference?””
She turned to Margaret.
“What does that mean?””
Margaret looked away.
Richard’s voice hardened.
“Who added that clause?””
No answer.
“Margaret.””
Still nothing.
Noah watched the adults with frightened eyes.
He touched Richard’s collar.
“Can we go home?””
Richard immediately looked down.
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because some adults forgot how to tell the truth.””
Margaret snapped, “Do not speak about me like I’m not standing here.””
Richard met her eyes.
“Then stand there and tell us the truth.””
She folded her arms.
“You're making a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“Trusting that document.””
Richard stared at the screen.
“That document was created by the Bennett Trust Office.””
“So?””
“So you signed it.””
Margaret’s face changed.
Charlotte noticed.
“You signed it?””
Margaret looked at her daughter.
“It was complicated.””
Richard stepped forward.
“No. It was deliberate.””
He reached toward the display.
A password prompt appeared.
Without hesitation, Richard entered a six-digit code.
The screen unlocked.
Charlotte stared.
“How do you know the password?””
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he opened the archived record.
A scanned page appeared.
At the top was a legal heading.
*CONFIDENTIAL FAMILY TRUST AMENDMENT*
Below it sat three signatures.
Richard Bennett.
Margaret Bennett.
And a third name.
Charlotte leaned closer.
“Who is Elena?””
Richard's face went still.
Noah looked from one adult to another.
“Who’s Elena?””
Nobody answered.
Margaret closed her eyes.
Richard scrolled.
A photograph appeared beside the document.
A young woman stood in a hospital room holding a newborn baby.
Richard recognized her instantly.
Even after six years.
Especially after six years.
“Elena,” he whispered.
Charlotte stared at the photograph.
“Dad…”
Richard swallowed.
“She was Noah’s mother.””
Charlotte looked at Noah.
“But I thought…”
“I know what you thought.””
“What did Mom tell you?””
Richard’s eyes stayed on the screen.
“That Elena abandoned him.””
Charlotte turned toward Margaret.
“You told us she abandoned her baby.””
Margaret’s mouth tightened.
“She left.””
“Why?””
“She chose to.””
Richard interrupted.
“No.””
Margaret looked at him.
“You weren't there.””
“I was.””
The words were quiet.
Heavy.
Charlotte's face went pale.
Richard continued.
“I was there when Noah was born.””
Margaret stepped backward.
“You promised.””
Richard ignored her.
“I held him before anyone else did.””
“You promised me you would never speak about that night.””
“I promised you because I was afraid.””
The confession seemed to shock even Richard.
He looked down at Noah.
The little boy was listening.
His small face had gone pale.
“Was my mom there?”” Noah asked.
Richard slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
“Did she want me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did she leave?””
Richard looked at Margaret.
She said nothing.
Noah’s voice became smaller.
“Did she leave because she didn't love me?””
Richard's expression broke.
“No, buddy.””
He kissed Noah’s hair.
“She loved you.””
“Then why wasn't she here?””
Richard’s hand trembled against the boy’s back.
“Because somebody made sure she couldn't be.””
Margaret slammed her palm against the table.
“Enough!””
Everyone jumped.
She pointed at Richard.
“You have no idea what you are doing.””
“Actually,” he said, “I’m finally finding out.””
He turned back to the screen.
Another document opened automatically.
*MEDICAL DISCHARGE RECORD — ELENA VALE*
Charlotte moved beside him.
“What happened to her?””
Richard read the line.
Then his face changed.
“She was transferred.””
“To where?””
Richard scrolled.
The answer appeared.
*BLACKRIDGE RECOVERY CENTER.*
Charlotte frowned.
“That’s a psychiatric hospital.””
Margaret quickly said, “It was for treatment.””
Richard looked at her.
“For what?””
Margaret remained silent.
“You said Elena abandoned Noah.””
“She was unstable.””
“Was she?””
“Yes.””
“Who diagnosed her?””
Margaret didn't answer.
“Who signed the admission order?””
Silence.
Richard stared at the signature.
His blood ran cold.
He zoomed in.
The signature was unmistakable.
*MARGARET BENNETT.*
Charlotte covered her mouth.
“No.””
Margaret shook her head.
“You don't understand.””
“You signed her into a facility?””
“She was a danger to herself.””
“Where is she now?””
Margaret looked at Richard.
“Dead.””
Charlotte inhaled sharply.
Richard froze.
“When?””
“Two years ago.””
“How?””
Margaret's eyes lowered.
“An overdose.””
Noah buried his face against Richard’s shoulder.
Richard stared at the screen.
His breathing became slow and controlled.
“You told me she left the country.””
Margaret said nothing.
“You told me she had another family.””
Still nothing.
“You told me she never asked about Noah.””
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“Richard…”
“You lied to me.””
“I did what I had to do.””
Richard turned.
“What you had to do?””
Margaret’s voice trembled.
“You were going to destroy the family.””
“No. I was going to tell the truth.””
“The truth would have destroyed your marriage.””
Richard went completely still.
Charlotte looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Margaret closed her eyes.
Richard answered instead.
“Your mother threatened to take Noah away.””
Charlotte frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Elena knew something.””
“What?””
Richard looked at the document.
At the trust.
At Noah's name.
Then another sealed file appeared at the bottom of the screen.
*PATERNITY DISPUTE — SEALED BY COURT ORDER.*
Charlotte whispered, “Paternity dispute?””
Richard opened it.
The first page contained one sentence.
*THE CHILD IDENTIFIED AS NOAH BENNETT IS NOT THE CHILD MARGARET BENNETT CLAIMED HE WAS.*
Richard's heart stopped.
He read it again.
Then again.
“No…”
Charlotte stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Richard’s eyes remained fixed on the screen.
A second page loaded.
A laboratory report.
A DNA comparison.
The names were displayed in bold.
*RICHARD BENNETT — 99.98% MATCH.*
*NOAH BENNETT — BIOLOGICAL SON.*
Charlotte exhaled shakily.
“So Noah really is Dad's son.””
Richard nodded.
“I knew he was.””
Margaret suddenly laughed.
It was a strange, broken sound.
Charlotte turned toward her.
“What’s funny?””
Margaret wiped her cheek.
“You think that was the secret?””
Richard slowly looked up.
“What other secret is there?””
Margaret stared at Noah.
Then at the screen.
Then at Richard.
“You finally found the record,” she whispered.
“But you didn't find the reason.””
Richard’s grip tightened around Noah.
“What reason?””
Margaret stepped toward the display.
Her eyes fixed on a small line buried beneath the DNA report.
It had been overlooked.
Even by Richard.
Even by Charlotte.
Margaret pointed to it.
“Read the second name.””
Richard leaned closer.
Beneath the words *Biological Father*, another line appeared.
*SECOND PATERNAL MATCH: 99.97%.*
Richard’s face went white.
Charlotte whispered, “Dad?””
Richard didn't answer.
His eyes remained on the screen.
Then, slowly, he read the name aloud.
“Jonathan Bennett.””
His brother.
Charlotte staggered backward.
“That’s impossible.””
Jonathan stood at the opposite end of the room.
He had been silent the entire night.
Now he finally spoke.
“Richard…”
Richard turned toward him.
Jonathan's face had lost all color.
“Tell me,” Richard said, “why does my son have your DNA too?””
Jonathan opened his mouth.
No words came.
Then the family display chimed again.
A new file appeared.
*DECEASED — ELENA VALE*
*LAST RECORDED MESSAGE*
The screen began to play.

And Elena's voice filled the Christmas room.
“Richard, if you're hearing this, they already know about the baby…”
