Chapter 6: The Empty Christmas Tree
Richard didn't remember the drive home.
He remembered the road.
He remembered the snow.
He remembered Jonathan shouting something from the passenger seat.
But he didn't remember the turns.
He only remembered one thought repeating in his mind.
*Noah.*
His little boy.
The child who had sat alone by the wall.
The child who had asked if he was really his son.
The child who had handed him a toy dinosaur and trusted him to bring it to a brother he had never met.
Richard's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“Faster.””
Jonathan looked at him.
“You’re already going too fast.””
“I don't care.””
“If you crash, you won't save anyone.””
Richard ignored him.
His phone sat on the dashboard.
No new messages.
No calls.
Nothing.
That terrified him more than anything.
Because silence meant someone else was already in control.
When they reached the Bennett estate, Richard knew something was wrong before the gates even opened.
The security lights were off.
The driveway was empty.
The front door was open.
Richard slammed the car into park and ran.
“Noah!””
His voice echoed through the house.
No answer.
“Charlotte!””
Nothing.
Jonathan followed behind him.
“Richard—”
Richard rushed into the dining room.
The Christmas table was exactly as they left it.
Half-eaten food.
Cold plates.
The family display still black.
But Noah was gone.
Richard stopped.
His entire body went still.
“No.””
Charlotte appeared at the doorway.
“Dad!””
Richard turned.
She ran toward him.
“He’s gone.””
The words barely came out.
Richard grabbed her shoulders.
“What happened?””
Charlotte was crying.
“I don't know.””
“Where is he?””
“I was upstairs with him.””
“You left him alone?””
“No!””
Her voice broke.
“I was only gone for thirty seconds.””
Richard released her.
“What do you mean?””
Charlotte wiped her tears.
“He asked me if Daniel was really his brother.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“And?””
“I told him yes.””
She looked toward the dark hallway.
“Then he said he wanted to draw him a picture.””
Richard's chest tightened.
“He went to get his crayons?””
“Yes.””
“And you?””
“I heard the front door.””
Richard looked toward the entrance.
“You thought it was me.””
Charlotte nodded.
“I called out your name.””
Her voice shook.
“But nobody answered.””
Jonathan walked toward the doorway.
“Was there anyone else here?””
Charlotte shook her head.
“The security system went down.””
Richard looked at the dark cameras.
“Convenient.””
Then he saw something.
On the floor beneath the Christmas tree.
A piece of paper.
He picked it up.
A drawing.
A family.
Five people holding hands.
Richard.
Charlotte.
Noah.
A woman.
And another boy.
Daniel.
At the bottom, in uneven handwriting, Noah had written:
*MY REAL FAMILY*
Richard closed his eyes.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Then he noticed something else.
A small red mark on the corner.
A fingerprint.
Not Noah's.
Someone had touched the drawing after him.
Richard turned the paper over.
A message had been written on the back.
*YOU TOOK ONE SON FROM US. NOW WE TAKE ONE FROM YOU.*
Jonathan went pale.
Richard looked at him.
“Who?””
Jonathan didn't answer.
“Jonathan.””
His brother stared at the words.
“I know that handwriting.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Whose is it?””
Jonathan looked terrified.
“Your father’s.””
The room went silent.
Richard stared.
“My father has been dead for twelve years.””
Jonathan nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
Jonathan looked at Margaret’s empty chair.
“She wasn't the only one keeping secrets.””
Richard felt cold.
“What are you saying?””
Jonathan took a shaky breath.
“The Bennett family has always had a second trust.””
Richard frowned.
“A second trust?””
“One nobody knows about.””
“Who created it?””
Jonathan looked at the family portraits lining the hallway.
“Your grandfather.””
Richard followed his gaze.
“And?””
“And he created rules.””
“What rules?””
Jonathan hesitated.
Then he said:
“Rules about who was allowed to inherit.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“More inheritance.””
“No.””
Jonathan looked at him.
“This was never about money.””
Richard stared.
“Then what?””
“Blood.””
The word hung in the room.
Jonathan continued.
“The Bennett family believed the bloodline had to remain controlled.””
Charlotte looked horrified.
“You're saying my grandparents treated children like assets?””
Jonathan lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
Richard walked toward the display.
“Show me.””
Jonathan shook his head.
“It won't open.””
“Why?””
“Because your father locked it.””
Richard stared at the black screen.
“My father died.””
“Yes.””
“So who has access?””
Jonathan didn't answer.
Richard turned.
“Who?””
Jonathan whispered,
“Daniel.””
Richard froze.
“What?””
“Daniel accessed the secondary trust months ago.””
“How?””
“I don't know.””
“But he did.””
“Yes.””
Richard looked toward the door.
“My son knows more about this family than I do.””
Jonathan nodded.
“And that's why he's in danger.””
A sound came from upstairs.
A soft creak.
Everyone froze.
Richard looked up.
“Noah?””
No answer.
He ran.
The others followed.
They searched every room.
The guest room.
The library.
The bedrooms.
Nothing.
Then Charlotte screamed.
Richard rushed toward her.
She stood in Noah's room.
The window was open.
Snow covered the floor.
Richard stared outside.
A trail of footprints disappeared into the garden.
But there was something else.
On Noah's bed.
A small envelope.
Richard picked it up.
His name was written on the front.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A recent one.
Noah sleeping.
Taken inside this house.
Richard's blood ran cold.
Someone had been watching him.
Watching Noah.
For how long?
The note behind the photograph contained only one sentence.
*Ask Margaret why Noah was supposed to die tonight.*
Richard slowly lowered the paper.
Everyone looked at Margaret.
Because she was standing in the doorway.
Richard hadn't heard her enter.
She looked exhausted.
Broken.
But not surprised.
“You knew.””
Margaret looked at Noah's empty bed.
“I knew they would come.””
Charlotte stepped toward her.
“They?””
Margaret didn't answer.
Richard moved closer.
“You knew someone was coming for Noah.””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing?””
“I tried.””
“You lied.””
“Yes.””
“You hid Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“You destroyed Elena.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Richard's voice became cold.
“Why?””
Margaret looked at him.
“Because I was trying to stop your father’s mistake.””
“My father has been dead for years.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You still don't understand.””
Richard stared.
“What?””
Margaret looked toward the family portraits.
“Your father didn't die because he was old.””
The room went quiet.
Charlotte whispered,
“What are you saying?””
Margaret looked at Richard.
“Your father died because he tried to expose the person controlling the trust.””
Richard felt a chill.
“Who?””
Margaret's lips trembled.
“The person who has been protecting this family secret.””
A notification suddenly sounded.
The black family display turned on.
Everyone looked.
A live video feed appeared.
Noah.
Sitting in a dark room.
His face was frightened.
Richard stepped toward the screen.
“Noah!””
The little boy looked up.
“Grandpa?””
Richard pressed his hand against the display.
“I'm coming.””
A voice spoke from behind the camera.
“You should have stayed away from the past, Richard.””
Richard froze.
He knew that voice.
Everyone knew that voice.
Margaret covered her mouth.
“No…”
The camera slowly moved.
A figure stepped into view.
Richard stared.
Because the person standing behind Noah was someone he had seen his entire life.
Someone he had trusted.
Someone who had just stood beside him at Christmas dinner.
Jonathan whispered,
“Impossible.””
The figure smiled.
And said:
“Hello, Richard.””
The screen flickered.
Then the name appeared beneath the video feed.
*BENNETT FAMILY TRUST ADMINISTRATOR: MARGARET BENNETT*
Richard looked at Margaret.
She was not on the screen.
She was standing beside him.
Alive.
Confused.
Terrified.
Then Richard understood.
Someone had stolen her identity.
Someone had used the trust.
Someone who knew everything.
The video feed zoomed in on Noah.
The boy looked toward the camera.
Then whispered:
“Grandpa… I know who took me.””
Richard leaned closer.
“Who?””
Noah swallowed.
May you like
And said:
“It was Daniel.””
