Chapter 9: The Woman Who Protected Me
The photograph slipped from my fingers.
It landed on the table.
But the sound felt impossibly loud.
Because the name written on the back wasn’t a stranger’s name.
It wasn’t Jasper.
It wasn’t Victor.
It was the person standing three feet away from me.
*Evelyn Carter.*
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then I looked up.
At the woman who had held my hand outside the hospital.
The woman who drove across town without hesitation.
The woman who told me I should have called her first.
The woman who had spent years telling me she would always protect me.
“Explain.””
My voice was barely above a whisper.
Evelyn looked at the photograph.
Then at me.
And for the first time since I had known her, she looked like she didn’t know what to say.
That hurt more than any lie.
Because Evelyn always had an answer.
She was the person who knew what to do.
The person who stayed calm when everyone else panicked.
But now she was silent.
“Evelyn.””
She closed her eyes.
“Hailey…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I need the truth.””
Victor looked uncomfortable.
Daniel stood completely still.
Everyone knew this moment belonged to me.
Not them.
Not their explanations.
Mine.
“What is this?””
Evelyn looked at the photo again.
“It’s not what you think.””
I almost laughed.
Because I had heard those words too many times.
“It never is.””
My voice cracked.
“Every time someone hides something from me, that’s what they say.””
Evelyn’s face fell.
“I understand.””
“No, you don’t.””
I looked at Toby.
Then back at her.
“You all keep deciding what I can handle.””
Nobody spoke.
“You say you’re protecting me.””
I held up the photograph.
“But from what?””
Evelyn took a slow breath.
“From a truth that could destroy everything you believed.””
I stared.
“Then tell me.””
The room became silent.
Finally, Evelyn sat down.
“I knew Jasper before you met him.””
My stomach tightened.
I already knew that part.
But hearing it from her made it worse.
“How?””
She looked down.
“I hired him.””
The words hit me like a physical blow.
“You hired him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your father asked me to.””
I froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
Victor looked away.
Daniel remained silent.
I stared at Evelyn.
“Why would my father ask you to hire Jasper?””
She swallowed.
“Because your father wanted to know who he really was.””
The room went completely still.
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Hailey—”
“No.””
I stood up carefully.
The pain from my surgery returned, but I barely noticed.
“You’re telling me my father knew about Jasper before I did?””
“Yes.””
“And you still let me marry him?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I tried to stop it.””
“When?””
“Before the wedding.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Did you tell me?””
“No.””
“Then you didn’t try hard enough.””
The words hurt her.
I saw it.
But I couldn’t take them back.
Because I was hurt too.
“So my father hired Jasper?””
“No.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Your father wanted to understand him.””
“How?””
“He believed Jasper was hiding something.””
I looked at Victor.
“Because of the business?””
“Yes.””
“Because of money?””
“Yes.””
I looked back at Evelyn.
“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Evelyn’s voice became quiet.
“Because your father made me promise.””
I stared.
“A promise.””
“Yes.””
“What promise?””
She looked directly at me.
“That if Jasper ever showed you who he really was, I would be there.””
The anger inside me shifted.
Just slightly.
“But you still lied.””
“Yes.””
She didn’t deny it.
That somehow made it harder.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked away.
Sorry wasn’t enough.
Not yet.
Daniel finally spoke.
“Hailey, there is something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked at Evelyn.
She nodded.
“Tell her.””
Daniel placed another document on the table.
“This is the report your father created after investigating Jasper.””
I looked down.
There were dates.
Notes.
Observations.
My father’s handwriting.
I read one line.
*Subject displays high emotional intelligence and strong ability to adapt behavior depending on audience.*
My hands tightened.
Another line.
*Primary concern: Subject does not seek wealth directly. Subject seeks proximity to influence.*
I stopped.
Not money.
Influence.
Another page.
*The danger is not that he will take everything immediately. The danger is that he will make the person who owns everything believe giving it away was their idea.*
My chest tightened.
Because that was Jasper.
Not in one huge moment.
In small pieces.
The decisions.
The opinions.
The suggestions.
The guilt.
He never demanded control.
He slowly convinced me that I wanted him to have it.
I turned the page.
And then I saw something that made me freeze.
A date.
The week before my wedding.
A note.
*Jasper has contacted Evelyn privately.*
I looked up.
“Why?””
Evelyn looked down.
“He asked me something.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
“Whether your father’s protections could be removed after marriage.””
My heart sank.
“And what did you say?””
“The truth.””
“What truth?””
“That they couldn’t.””
I stared at her.
“And after that?””
“Nothing.””
“Nothing?””
She looked away.
“He changed.””
I remembered.
The months after our wedding.
The way Jasper became colder.
The way he stopped pretending as much.
The way he started acting like my independence was a personal insult.
“He knew.””
Evelyn nodded.
“He knew he couldn’t access everything directly.””
“So he tried through me.””
“Yes.””
The words hurt.
Even though I already knew.
Because hearing it confirmed was different.
A knock came from the door.
Everyone froze.
Again.
But this time, nobody moved.
Daniel looked through the window.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Evelyn stood.
“Who is it?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Jasper.””
My heart stopped.
Victor stood quickly.
“He shouldn’t be here.””
“How did he find us?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew the possibility.
Someone had told him.
The knock came again.
“Hailey.””
His voice.
My husband’s voice.
The man I had loved.
The man who left me outside a hospital.
The man who now stood outside the door.
“I know you’re inside.””
I looked at Evelyn.
Then Daniel.
Then Toby.
The fear I felt was different now.
Before, I was afraid of losing Jasper.
Now I was afraid of letting him near my son.
“Don’t open the door,” Daniel said.
But Jasper spoke again.
“Hailey, please.””
Please.
The word almost made me laugh.
Because Jasper had never sounded like that with me.
Not when I cried.
Not when I needed help.
Not when I stood outside the hospital.
“Please,” he repeated.
“I need to explain.””
I walked toward the door.
Everyone tensed.
But I didn’t open it.
I stood on the other side.
“What do you want?””
Silence.
Then:
“I want to fix this.””
I closed my eyes.
“Fix what?””
“Our marriage.””
I almost whispered:
“You left me.””
“I made a mistake.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“You made a choice.””
Silence.
Then Jasper said something unexpected.
“You think Evelyn is protecting you.””
I didn’t answer.
“She isn’t.””
I looked back at her.
She looked hurt.
But she didn’t interrupt.
“She was involved from the beginning.””
My hand tightened.
“You’re right.””
A pause.
I heard his breathing change.
“What?””
“She was.””
Silence.
“But not the way you think.””
Jasper didn’t respond.
Because he wasn’t expecting that.
I continued.
“She knew you before I did.””
The silence became heavier.
“She knew what you wanted.””
Another pause.
Then Jasper’s voice changed.
The softness disappeared.
“She told you.””
Not a question.
An accusation.
“Yes.””
A long silence.
Then:
“Hailey, you need to listen to me carefully.””
“No.””
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
“I understand enough.””
“You don’t.””
His voice became colder.
“If you stay with them, you’re going to lose everything.””
I looked down at Toby.
Then at the photograph.
Then at the letter from my father.
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“I already lost something.””
“What?””
“The person I thought you were.””
Silence.
Then Jasper whispered:
“You’re making a mistake.””
I stared at the door.
“Maybe.””
A pause.
“But this is the first mistake I’m making for myself.””
For several seconds, there was nothing.
Then Jasper said:
“You really want the truth?””
My heart tightened.
“Yes.””
“Then ask Evelyn what happened after your father died.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Ask her why she disappeared for three days.””
I turned slowly.
Evelyn’s face changed.
And that was when I knew.
There was still one more secret.
One more thing nobody had told me.
The door remained closed.
Jasper walked away.
But his final words stayed behind.
*“Ask her where she was when your father took his last breath.””*
I looked at Evelyn.
And for the first time…
May you like
I wondered if the person who protected me all these years…
was also the person who had been hiding the truth from me.
