Chapter 6: The Night My Father Disappeared
The message stayed on my screen for almost a full minute.
*“You need to ask Evelyn what happened the night your father died.””*
I read it until the words stopped looking like words.
Then I looked at Evelyn.
She didn’t look surprised.
That was the part that hurt.
Not the message.
Not Jasper’s accusation.
Her silence.
“Evelyn.””
She lowered her eyes.
“Hailey.””
“What happened that night?””
The room became painfully quiet.
Even Toby seemed to sense the change. He stirred softly in his crib, and I immediately reached over to touch his tiny hand.
A part of me wanted to ignore the question.
To protect the memory of my father.
To pretend Jasper was just trying to create chaos.
But I couldn’t.
Because everyone else seemed to know something I didn’t.
And I was tired of being the last person to learn the truth about my own life.
“Tell me.””
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
He gave a small nod.
Not permission.
More like acceptance.
Evelyn took a slow breath.
“The night your father died wasn’t what you were told.””
My heart sank.
“What was I told?””
“That he had a heart attack while driving home.””
I nodded slowly.
“That’s what happened.””
“Yes.””
Her answer confused me.
“Then what am I missing?””
Evelyn folded her hands together.
“Your father did have a heart attack.””
I waited.
“But?””
She looked at me.
“But he wasn’t alone before it happened.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“Who was with him?””
Neither of them answered immediately.
That silence was an answer.
My voice became quieter.
“Jasper?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
I stared at Evelyn.
“Then who?””
Daniel spoke.
“A business associate.””
“Who?””
Evelyn looked uncomfortable.
“Someone your father had recently discovered was stealing from one of his companies.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Your father had been investigating financial irregularities.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And nobody told me?””
“You were grieving.””
“I was his daughter.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
That single word carried guilt.
I stood up carefully.
The pain from my surgery reminded me not to move too fast, but I barely noticed.
“My father was investigating someone and nobody told me?””
Evelyn stood too.
“Hailey, listen.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I spent months thinking my father died suddenly. I thought I lost him without warning.””
I looked away.
“And now I’m finding out there was something happening around him?””
Evelyn’s expression softened.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
“I was alone.””
The room went silent.
“I lost my mother. Then I lost him. And everyone kept saying they were protecting me.””
My eyes burned.
“But nobody asked me if I wanted the truth.””
Evelyn looked devastated.
And somehow that made it harder.
Because I knew she loved me.
That was the problem.
The people who hurt us weren’t always people who didn’t care.
Sometimes they were people who cared so much they decided they knew better.
Daniel quietly said:
“Your father made that choice.””
I turned to him.
“What?””
“He was the one who instructed us not to tell you.””
I froze.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the letter on the table.
“Because he knew you.””
I didn’t answer.
“He knew you would blame yourself.””
I looked away.
Because he was right.
My father knew me too well.
I would have abandoned everything to solve the problem.
I would have tried to fix things.
I would have carried a burden that wasn’t mine.
“What does this have to do with Jasper?””
Evelyn walked back to the table and picked up the phone.
“Everything.””
She opened something.
A photograph.
Then turned the screen toward me.
I looked at it.
And my stomach dropped.
It was Jasper.
Younger.
Maybe a few years before we met.
Standing outside a restaurant.
Talking to a man.
I recognized the man immediately.
Not because I knew him personally.
Because I had seen his name before.
On documents.
In my father’s company reports.
“Who is that?””
Daniel answered.
“Victor Hale.””
The name felt familiar.
“Why does Jasper know him?””
“That’s what your father was trying to find out.””
I stared at the picture.
“Are you saying Jasper was involved?””
“No.””
Daniel’s answer was firm.
“Not based on what we know.””
I exhaled.
“Then why show me this?””
“Because Jasper’s connection to Victor is the reason your father became cautious.””
I looked at the picture again.
“Did Jasper know my father was investigating him?””
“We don’t know.””
“But you think he did.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“We think Jasper knew more about your father’s business than he admitted.””
I sat down again.
Everything felt like it was moving too quickly.
My marriage.
My father’s secrets.
The trust.
The money.
The threats.
I had spent years believing my biggest challenge was proving myself.
Now I realized I might have been surrounded by people playing a game I didn’t even know existed.
“What happens now?””
Daniel answered immediately.
“First, we protect you and Toby.””
“And Jasper?””
“We don’t confront him emotionally.””
I almost smiled.
“You mean don’t scream at him?””
“Yes.””
“That’s going to be difficult.””
For the first time, Evelyn smiled slightly.
“There she is.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“The Hailey I remember.””
I looked down.
“I don’t feel like her.””
“You will.””
A moment of silence passed.
Then my phone rang.
Again.
Jasper.
I stared at the screen.
“He’s calling.””
Daniel nodded.
“Answer.””
I looked surprised.
“You want me to?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because people reveal more when they think they still have control.””
I hesitated.
Then answered.
“Hello?””
Jasper didn’t say anything for several seconds.
Finally:
“You’re with them.””
Not a question.
An accusation.
“Yes.””
“Hailey, you don’t understand what they’re doing.””
I looked at Toby.
“Funny.””
“What?””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
His breathing changed.
“Who?””
“You. Evelyn. Daniel.””
I paused.
“And I’m starting to think everyone believes I’m the only person who doesn’t know what’s happening.””
Silence.
Then Jasper said:
“Your father wasn’t the man you think he was.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Explain.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because you won’t believe me.””
“Try.””
Another pause.
Then his voice lowered.
“He destroyed people.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Your father wasn’t just a businessman, Hailey.””
I waited.
“He was ruthless.””
The words hurt.
Not because I believed them.
Because I hated that I wondered.
Jasper continued.
“You think he protected you? He controlled everything around you.””
My eyes moved to the folder on the table.
The trust documents.
The letter.
The protections.
“You’re saying that because you want something.””
His silence told me everything.
“Hailey—”
“No.””
I stood.
“You want me to doubt everyone who can stop you.””
“That’s not true.””
“Then why did you wait until today to tell me?””
Nothing.
I heard him breathe.
Then:
“Because I thought you’d never find out.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
The line went quiet.
I pulled the phone away slightly.
“Jasper?””
Then he said the one thing I wasn’t prepared for.
“The night your father died…”
My fingers tightened.
“What about it?””
“I was there.””
The world stopped.
I couldn’t hear anything else.
Not the apartment.
Not the city.
Not even my own breathing.
“What did you say?””
“I said I was there.””
My voice became a whisper.
“You were there when my father died?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She had heard.
Her face had gone completely pale.
Because she knew.
She knew this was the missing piece.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Jasper didn’t answer.
And that silence was worse than any confession.
“Jasper.””
Finally, he spoke.
“Because your father asked me not to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He knew.””
My heartbeat thundered.
“He knew I was there.””
I looked at Evelyn.
Then Daniel.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
“Why?””
Jasper’s voice became quieter.
“Because he knew what I was capable of.””
The call ended.
I stood there holding my phone.
My entire world had shifted again.
Because Jasper wasn’t just a stranger hiding behind a smile.
He wasn’t just a husband who abandoned me.
He was connected to the last night of my father’s life.
And now I needed to know one thing.
The question that had been haunting me since the call ended.

What exactly did my father know about Jasper…
that made him keep this secret until his final day?
