Chapter 4: The Secret My Father Left Behind
I read Jasper’s message again.
Then again.
The words didn’t change.
*“If you think calling Evelyn changes anything, you don’t understand what you married into.””*
A few hours ago, I would have read that message differently.
I would have searched for an explanation.
I would have wondered if I had misunderstood him.
I would have found some excuse.
Maybe he was angry.
Maybe he was stressed.
Maybe he didn’t mean it.
That was what I had always done.
I had spent two years translating Jasper’s cruelty into something softer because admitting the truth felt too painful.
But sitting in that hospital cafeteria, with my newborn son sleeping beside me and three people who had known me longer than Jasper ever had, I finally saw the pattern.
Jasper didn’t apologize.
He intimidated.
He didn’t ask.
He demanded.
And when he lost control, he looked for something to threaten.
My son.
The thought made my hands shake.
“Explain,” I said.
My voice surprised me.
It wasn’t frightened.
It was steady.
Daniel looked at me carefully.
“Hailey—”
“No.””
I sat straighter despite the pain pulling through my incision.
“I need to know.””
Evelyn reached for my hand.
“We’ll tell you everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“But first, I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Has Jasper ever talked about Toby’s future?””
I frowned.
“Of course.””
“What exactly did he say?””
I thought about it.
At first, the memories seemed harmless.
Jasper talking about schools.
Jasper talking about opportunities.
Jasper saying our son would have every advantage.
But now, hearing Daniel’s question, those conversations felt different.
“He talked about giving Toby the best life possible.””
Daniel waited.
I continued.
“He said our son would never struggle.””
“And did he ever mention money?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
I swallowed.
“He said we had resources.””
Daniel’s expression changed slightly.
“Did he say we?””
“Yes.””
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“That’s what we were afraid of.””
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel opened the folder again.
“Your father established a trust for Toby before he passed away.””
“I know.””
“No, Hailey. You know there is a trust.””
He tapped the papers.
“You do not know the details.””
I stared at the documents.
“What details?””
“The trust cannot be controlled by Jasper.””
“Because he’s not the beneficiary.””
“Correct.””
I nodded slowly.
“So why is he trying?””
Daniel leaned back.
“Because Jasper believed he could gain access.””
“How?””
“Through you.””
The answer hurt more than I expected.
Through me.
Not because he loved me.
Not because he trusted me.
Because I was the door.
The access point.
The thing standing between him and what he wanted.
My stomach twisted.
“When did you realize?””
Evelyn looked down.
“Before your wedding.””
I froze.
“You knew?””
“We suspected.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
The question came out sharper than I intended.
Evelyn didn’t defend herself.
She simply accepted the anger.
“Because your father asked me not to interfere unless you were in danger.””
I looked away.
“And you thought I wasn’t?””
“I thought you were stubborn.””
A tiny, painful smile crossed her face.
“You loved him.””
I said nothing.
Because I had.
I really had.
Or at least, I had loved the man Jasper showed me.
The man who brought me coffee every morning.
The man who remembered small details.
The man who held my hand when my father died.
That was the cruelest part.
The beginning had been real.
Or at least, it had felt real.
“How did my father know?”” I whispered.
Daniel answered.
“Your father was a businessman.””
“I know.””
“He understood people.””
A pause.
“He noticed Jasper was always interested in what came with you.””
I looked down.
“That’s not fair.””
Daniel didn’t react.
“Maybe not.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Your father never accused him of anything.””
“Then what did he do?””
“He protected you.””
The words sat heavily.
I looked at Toby.
My son.
The person I had already decided I would protect at any cost.
And suddenly, I understood my father differently.
He wasn’t trying to control my life.
He was trying to make sure I would never be trapped.
“Why didn’t Jasper know about the trust?””
“He did.””
I looked up quickly.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“He knew there were protections.””
“How?””
“Because he asked.””
“When?””
“Three weeks after your wedding.””
My chest tightened.
Three weeks.
That was barely after the honeymoon.
“What did he ask?””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“He wanted to know if your father’s estate could be changed after marriage.””
I felt sick.
“He asked that?””
“Yes.””
“What did you say?””
“I told him the truth.””
“What truth?””
“That your father’s decisions were final.””
I looked at my hands.
“And after that?””
“He stopped asking.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
Jasper stopped asking because he changed strategies.
He didn’t need to know the rules.
He just needed to make me trust him enough to open the door.
A nurse entered the cafeteria.
“Mrs. Bennett?””
I looked up.
“Yes?””
“Your discharge paperwork shows you need to pick up your medication.””
My heart sank.
The SUV.
The diaper bag.
The medicine.
Evelyn noticed.
“Don’t worry.””
“I need those medications.””
Daniel stood.
“I’ll handle it.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
He picked up his phone.
“I’ll make a call.””
Something about the confidence in his voice made me uneasy.
“Daniel.””
“Yes?””
“I don’t want a war.””
Nobody spoke.
The three of them looked at me.
I continued.
“I just had a baby. I don’t want my son growing up surrounded by people fighting.””
Evelyn’s expression softened.
“Hailey.””
“I mean it.””
I looked down at Toby.
“I don’t want revenge.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Good.””
I blinked.
“Good?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because revenge makes people careless.””
He closed the folder.
“But protection requires patience.””
Those words stayed with me.
Protection.
Not revenge.
Not anger.
Protection.
For the first time since Jasper drove away, I wasn’t thinking about what I had lost.
I was thinking about what I needed to protect.
An hour later, Evelyn drove us home.
Not my house.
Not yet.
Her guest apartment.
She insisted I needed somewhere safe while everything was sorted out.
The entire drive, I stared out the window.
The city passed by.
People walked with coffee cups.
Cars stopped at traffic lights.
The world continued like nothing had happened.
But my life had changed completely.
When we arrived, Evelyn helped me inside.
The apartment was quiet and warm.
A small crib had already been placed near the bedroom.
I stopped.
“You had this?””
She looked away.
“I may have prepared.””
“When?””
She smiled sadly.
“After I heard you were pregnant.””
My eyes filled.
“You really thought I’d need you?””
“No.””
She touched Toby’s blanket.
“I hoped you wouldn’t.””
That hurt.
Because she wasn’t saying she expected Jasper to fail.
She was saying she hoped she would be wrong.
I sat on the bed.
For the first time all day, exhaustion hit me.
Then my phone rang.
Jasper.
Everyone froze.
I stared at the screen.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Do you want to answer?””
I didn’t know.
A part of me wanted to.
A part of me wanted to hear him explain.
Another part knew I might never forgive myself if I let him manipulate me again.
The phone kept ringing.
Finally, I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, Jasper said nothing.
Then:
“Where are you?””
Not hello.
Not how is Toby.
Not are you okay.
Where are you.
“I’m safe.””
His voice tightened.
“Who are you with?””
I looked at Evelyn.
Then Daniel.
“Why does that matter?””
“Hailey.””
There was something different in his voice.
Not anger.
Panic.
“You need to come home.””
I almost laughed.
“Home?””
“Yes.””
“The home you left me stranded from?””
“That’s not what happened.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The rewriting.
The denial.
“You gave me bus fare.””
“I was trying to teach you a lesson.””
My blood went cold.
“A lesson?””
“Yes.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What lesson?””
A pause.
Then Jasper said:
“That you don’t get to make decisions without me.””
I stopped breathing.
Because in that moment, I finally understood.
This was never about the SUV.
Never about lunch.
Never about stress.
It was about control.
And Jasper had just admitted it himself.
“I’m not coming back tonight,” I said.
His voice dropped.
“Hailey.””
“No.””
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
“Actually…”
I looked at Toby.
“I think I finally do.””
Silence.
Then Jasper whispered:
“Who told you?””
My heart skipped.
“What?””
“Who told you about the trust?””
I froze.
He knew.
He knew exactly what we were discussing.
I didn’t answer.
His breathing changed.
“Hailey, listen to me.””
For the first time, I heard fear in his voice.
Not concern.
Fear.
“You need to stay away from Daniel.””
“Why?””
“Because he’s been lying to you.””
I looked at Daniel.
“About what?””
Jasper hesitated.
Only for a second.
But I heard it.
He was choosing his words.
“There are things about your father you don’t know.””
My blood ran cold.
“What things?””
The line went silent.
Then Jasper said:
“Things your father did before he died.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Because for the first time, Jasper wasn’t trying to scare me away from the truth.
He was trying to make me afraid of finding it.
And somewhere deep inside, I knew one thing.
May you like
Whatever secret my father left behind…
Jasper was terrified I would discover it.
