Chapter 8: The Man My Father Feared

Nobody moved.

The voice outside the door faded into silence, but the apartment remained frozen.

Victor Hale.

The name from my father’s file.

The name connected to the investigation.

The name that had appeared again and again like a warning.

And now he was standing outside Evelyn’s apartment.

Asking to talk about my husband.

I looked at Daniel.

His expression had changed completely.

The calm lawyer I had known for years was gone.

In his place was someone calculating every possibility.

“Did you tell anyone where we were?”” he asked.

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

“Did Jasper?””

“I don’t know.””

My stomach tightened.

Because suddenly, the safety I had felt for the first time since leaving the hospital disappeared.

I looked at Toby.

He was sleeping.

Peacefully.

Completely unaware.

I walked toward him immediately.

Evelyn noticed.

“Hailey.””

“I’m moving him.””

“Good.””

I carefully lifted my son from the crib.

His tiny body settled against my chest.

The moment I felt his warmth, my fear turned into something else.

Determination.

I wasn’t just protecting myself anymore.

I was protecting him.

Daniel walked closer to the door.

“Don’t open it.””

“I wasn’t planning to.””

The doorbell rang again.

Then Victor spoke.

“Evelyn, I know you’re in there.””

Everyone went still.

How did he know?

Daniel looked at her.

“Does he know you?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You’ve met him.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

My heart pounded.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Because I didn’t know he would come here.””

“But you knew him.””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

The anger I felt was immediate.

Not because she had secrets.

Because secrets had become the language everyone used around me.

Protecting me.

Helping me.

Saving me.

And somehow, I was always the last person to know.

The doorbell rang again.

This time harder.

Victor’s voice lowered.

“Hailey, I’m not here to hurt you.””

I almost laughed.

Because everyone who caused trouble always said that first.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Don’t answer.””

But Victor continued.

“I know Jasper left you at the hospital.””

My blood ran cold.

“How does he know that?”” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

Victor continued.

“I know about the trust.””

Silence.

“And I know Jasper tried to access Toby’s account.””

My grip tightened around my son.

Daniel looked toward the door.

“He knows too much.””

That was exactly what I was thinking.

“Why is he here?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

A dangerous thought entered my mind.

Maybe he wasn’t here to hurt me.

Maybe he was here because he knew something we didn’t.

“Open the door.””

Everyone turned toward me.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“I need answers.””

“Hailey.””

“I’m tired of being protected from information.””

My voice cracked.

“I need to know what’s happening.””

Evelyn looked at me for a long moment.

Then she nodded.

“I’ll open it.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

She glanced at Toby.

“But Hailey is right.””

She walked to the door.

The lock clicked.

Slowly.

Victor stood on the other side.

He looked older than the photograph.

His hair was gray.

His suit was expensive but worn.

His face carried the kind of exhaustion that came from years of carrying something heavy.

His eyes moved immediately to me.

Then to Toby.

“Hailey.””

I didn’t answer.

He looked at Evelyn.

“You shouldn’t have hidden this from her.””

The words irritated me.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Everyone looked at me.

I stepped forward.

“Not you.””

Victor studied me.

“You’re right.””

He nodded.

“I don’t.””

“Then tell me why you’re here.””

He looked at Toby.

Then back at me.

“Because Jasper is about to make the same mistake twice.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What does that mean?””

Victor entered slowly.

Daniel didn’t stop him.

But he stayed close.

Watching.

“I know Jasper.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“How?””

Victor looked at Evelyn.

“She never told you?””

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked guilty.

Again.

Victor sighed.

“Of course she didn’t.””

“Tell me.””

He nodded.

“Jasper worked for me.””

The room went silent.

I stared.

“What?””

“Before he met you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because he told me he built his career himself.””

Victor gave a humorless smile.

“That’s what he wanted people to believe.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Evelyn.

Nobody corrected him.

My heart sank.

“What did he do for you?””

Victor walked toward the table.

“Financial analysis.””

“Meaning?””

“He looked for opportunities.””

The words sounded harmless.

But the way he said them wasn’t.

“What kind of opportunities?””

Victor looked at me.

“People with money.””

I felt sick.

“You’re saying he targeted wealthy people?””

“I’m saying Jasper understood how wealth moved.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Careful.””

Victor looked at him.

“I’m telling the truth.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“And you’re also the person Hailey’s father was investigating.””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

That surprised me.

“You admit it?””

“I have nothing to hide anymore.””

He looked at me.

“Your father thought I was stealing from him.””

“Were you?””

Victor was silent.

A long silence.

Then:

“No.””

Nobody spoke.

I didn’t know whether to believe him.

“How convenient.””

He nodded.

“I understand why you think that.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

He looked around the room.

“Because everyone around you has been telling you what to believe.””

That hit harder than I expected.

Because it was true.

My whole life recently had become a collection of half-truths.

“So tell me.””

Victor sat down.

“The night your father died, he called me.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“He told me he had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“Proof that Jasper had been using my company to gain access to people like you.””

I stared.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Not because I defended Jasper.

Because hearing it made everything too real.

Victor continued.

“Your father didn’t hate Jasper.””

“What?””

“He actually liked him.””

That surprised me.

“He said Jasper was intelligent.””

I remembered my father saying Jasper was charming.

Not trustworthy.

There was a difference.

“But he believed Jasper’s ambition would eventually outweigh his loyalty.””

I looked down.

“What happened that night?””

Victor’s face became serious.

“Your father planned to confront Jasper.””

“He did.””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

Victor looked at Evelyn.

She nodded.

“Tell her.””

Victor took a breath.

“I arrived after Jasper left.””

My heart raced.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Did you see my father?””

“Yes.””

“Was he alive?””

Victor looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“He was alive when I left.””

My hands went cold.

“Then how did he die?””

Victor looked directly at me.

“That’s the question your father wanted answered.””

A terrible feeling moved through me.

“You’re saying someone else was there?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Victor hesitated.

Then he reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“My father left this for you?””

I stared.

“What?””

“Your father knew he might not get the chance to explain everything.””

He placed it on the table.

“My instructions were to give this to you only if Jasper ever tried to control you.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Victor looked at Toby.

“Because your father believed Jasper would eventually reveal himself.””

Nobody moved.

I reached for the envelope.

My fingers trembled.

Inside was one photograph.

I pulled it out.

And my entire body went numb.

It was a picture of Jasper.

But not with my father.

Not with Victor.

With someone else.

Someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

Someone whose name had never appeared in any warning.

I turned the photo over.

On the back, my father had written one sentence.

*“Hailey, the person you trust most is the one you need to question first.””*

I stopped breathing.

Because underneath that sentence was a name.

A name that made Evelyn step backward.

A name that made Daniel close his eyes.

May you like

A name that changed everything.

*Evelyn Carter.*
