Chapter 7: The Truth Behind the Smile

For ten minutes after Jasper hung up, nobody spoke.

Not because we had nothing to say.

Because we had too much.

My phone was still in my hand.

The screen had gone dark, but I could still hear his voice.

*“I was there.””*

Four words.

Four words that had shattered everything I thought I knew.

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked back at me.

And for the first time since I called her outside the hospital, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear for herself.

Fear for me.

“Tell me the truth.””

My voice was quiet.

But nobody misunderstood.

Evelyn sat down slowly.

“Hailey…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t want protection anymore.””

The words surprised even me.

“I don’t want anyone deciding what I can handle.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

I continued.

“My father died. Jasper was there. You knew something was wrong. And somehow, I was the only person who didn’t know.””

Tears burned behind my eyes.

“I deserve the truth.””

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“You’re right.””

I wasn’t expecting that.

She took a breath.

“Your father met Jasper the night he died.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

“At your father’s office.””

“Why?””

Daniel answered.

“Because Jasper asked for a meeting.””

I frowned.

“Why would Jasper ask to meet my father?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn said:

“Because your father confronted him.””

The room went silent.

“About what?””

She looked at the folder.

“About money.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Money.

The thing that kept appearing in every conversation.

The thing Jasper pretended not to care about.

The thing he claimed he only wanted for our family.

“What did my father accuse him of?””

Daniel leaned forward.

“He didn’t accuse him of stealing.””

“Then what?””

“He accused him of hiding his intentions.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your father believed Jasper entered your life with expectations.””

My chest tightened.

“Expectations about me?””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

Because some part of me still wanted to defend him.

Even now.

Even after everything.

That was the hardest part.

The heart doesn’t always catch up with the truth.

“How did they meet before I introduced them?””

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside was another photograph.

This one was older.

Jasper.

My father.

A charity event.

I recognized the location.

A foundation dinner my father hosted.

“I thought Jasper was there because of work.””

“He was,” Daniel said.

“But not in the way you thought.””

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

“Jasper was working for an investment group that wanted a partnership with your father’s company.””

I stared.

“He never told me that.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because after meeting you, his relationship with your father changed.””

I looked at the picture.

The two men standing together.

My father smiling.

Jasper smiling.

Both of them looking like they were having a normal conversation.

But now I saw something else.

A performance.

“What happened?””

Evelyn answered.

“Your father rejected the partnership.””

“Why?””

“Because he discovered concerns about their financial practices.””

I felt a chill.

“Jasper’s company?””

“Not directly.””

“Then why did he care?””

“Because Jasper defended them.””

I sat back.

The pieces were beginning to connect.

Not perfectly.

Not completely.

But enough.

Jasper hadn’t met me randomly.

Not entirely.

“What did my father say to him that night?””

Daniel looked at the table.

“Your father told Jasper something.””

“What?””

“That if Jasper truly loved you, he would walk away from your family’s money.””

My breath caught.

“He tested him?””

“Not exactly.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Your father wanted to know whether Jasper would choose you when there was nothing to gain.””

A painful silence followed.

“And?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“He didn’t walk away.””

I swallowed.

“He married me.””

“Yes.””

“But that doesn’t prove anything.””

“No.””

Evelyn’s voice was gentle.

“But what happened after the wedding did.””

I looked down.

The small things.

The questions.

The comments.

The way Jasper slowly took over decisions.

The way he started saying “our assets” before I realized he meant “your assets.””

The way he became irritated when I wanted independence.

I had called those things normal marriage problems.

Maybe they weren’t.

“What happened the night my father died?””

Daniel answered.

“Your father confronted Jasper.””

“About the money?””

“About you.””

I looked up.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

He continued.

“Your father told Jasper that he knew what he was doing.””

My heart pounded.

“What did Jasper say?””

“That he loved you.””

I almost laughed.

Because it was exactly what Jasper would say.

The perfect answer.

The answer nobody could argue with.

“And my father believed him?””

Evelyn’s eyes softened.

“No.””

That hurt.

Because my father had known.

He had known and still let me choose.

“What happened next?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“Jasper left the office.””

“And my father?””

“He stayed.””

“Alone?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the table.

“So Jasper left before he died.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Jasper say he was there?””

Nobody answered.

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Wait.””

I looked between them.

“He said he was there.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“But you said he left.””

“Yes.””

My voice dropped.

“Then where was he?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“That’s what we never found out.””

The room became silent.

A mystery.

A missing piece.

A question that had been buried for years.

Until today.

“Why didn’t the police investigate?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“They did.””

“And?””

“The investigation concluded there was no evidence of wrongdoing.””

I looked at Jasper’s message.

“No evidence.””

“Correct.””

I stood and walked toward the window.

The city stretched below.

People living ordinary lives.

Not knowing that one conversation could split everything apart.

“Jasper knew.””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Knew what?””

“That if he told me he was there, I would ask questions.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

“He wanted me to doubt my father.””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

No one answered.

Then Daniel said:

“Because your father left one final instruction.””

I turned around.

“What instruction?””

Daniel opened the folder again.

He removed a single page.

“This.””

I took it.

My father’s handwriting.

Again.

But this time, the words made my blood run cold.

*If Jasper ever reveals that he was present the night of my death, do not believe his version of events.*

I stopped.

My hands trembled.

There was more.

*He will attempt to make Hailey question the people who protected her. He will use uncertainty as a weapon.*

I looked at Evelyn.

“He knew.””

“Yes.””

“He knew Jasper would do this?””

“Yes.””

I read the final lines.

*The truth is not hidden because it is dangerous. The truth is hidden because the wrong person knowing it could use it against her.*

My heart raced.

I flipped the page.

There was a handwritten note underneath.

A name.

One name.

Someone I had never expected.

*Victor Hale.*

I looked up.

“Why is his name here?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Because he knew.

“This is the person your father was investigating before he died.””

“But what does he have to do with Jasper?””

Evelyn reached for the paper.

She stared at the name.

Then whispered:

“I think we finally know.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Jasper wasn’t the person your father was afraid of.””

A chill ran through me.

“Then who was?””

Before anyone could answer, the apartment doorbell rang.

Everyone froze.

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“I wasn’t expecting anyone.””

My heartbeat increased.

The bell rang again.

Once.

Twice.

Then a voice came through the door.

A voice I had heard only once before.

But I recognized it immediately.

“Hailey.””

My blood went cold.

Because the person standing outside wasn’t Jasper.

It was someone who had no reason to be there.

Someone who should have been impossible to find.

Someone connected to the secret my father died protecting.

“Open the door.””

The voice continued.

“We need to talk about your husband.””

I looked at Evelyn.

May you like

She whispered one word.

“Victor.””
