Chapter 9: The Truth He Was Running From

The knocking continued.

Three slow knocks.

Then silence.

Elon stood frozen in the middle of the living room.

I had seen him nervous before.

Deadlines.

Work problems.

Arguments.

But I had never seen fear like this.

This wasn’t the fear of being caught cheating.

This was the fear of someone from his past finally reaching him.

I looked at the front door.

Then back at him.

“Who is that?””

He didn’t answer.

“Elon.””

His eyes moved toward the door.

“Emma…”

The way he said my name made my skin crawl.

Not because it sounded cruel.

Because it sounded like a warning.

“What did you do?””

He looked at me.

And for once, he didn’t try to deny anything.

“I need you to trust me.””

I almost laughed.

After everything.

After months of lies.

After planning behind my back.

That was what he asked for.

Trust.

“You don’t get to ask me that anymore.””

The knocking came again.

This time louder.

“Elon! Open the door!””

The voice was angry.

Not threatening.

Not violent.

Just full of frustration.

Elon closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words stopped me.

Because they were different.

Not the empty apologies from before.

Not the ones he used when he wanted the conversation to end.

This one sounded like he knew something irreversible was about to happen.

He walked toward the door slowly.

I followed.

Not beside him.

Behind him.

Watching.

Learning.

He opened the door.

A man stood outside.

He looked to be in his late fifties.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

A worn jacket.

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then the man looked past Elon.

And saw me.

His expression changed.

“You didn’t tell her.””

Elon looked down.

My heart started pounding.

“Tell me what?””

The man looked at Elon.

“You really didn’t tell her anything?””

“Elijah—”

The man raised a hand.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t get to protect him anymore.””

Protect him?

I looked between them.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at me.

“My name is Elijah Carter.””

My breath stopped.

Carter.

My last name.

No.

That couldn’t be.

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly.

“But you need to know the truth about your husband.””

I turned toward Elon.

“What is he talking about?””

Elon looked like he wanted to disappear.

“Elijah, please.””

“No.””

The older man stepped inside.

“You had years to tell her.””

Years?

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Elijah looked at me.

“It means Elon didn’t meet you by accident.””

The room went silent.

I felt like I had heard that sentence before.

From Rachel.

From Elon.

But now it meant something different.

“What are you saying?””

Elijah sighed.

“Your husband knew who you were before he approached you.””

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Elon looked at me.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t.””

Everything inside me was fighting against the possibility.

Because an affair was one thing.

A secret plan was another.

But my entire marriage being built on a lie?

That was something else.

Elijah reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this when I was cleaning out my office.””

He handed it to me.

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

“Something Elon wrote before you two met.””

I looked at my husband.

He looked away.

That was enough.

I took the envelope.

My fingers felt numb.

Inside was a single page.

A handwritten note.

The date was almost three years earlier.

Before our wedding.

Before Sophie.

Before everything.

I read the first line.

*Emma Carter.*

My heart stopped.

I kept reading.

*I know this sounds impossible, but I finally found her.*

I looked up.

“Elon.””

He closed his eyes.

My hands shook.

*She has no idea who I am. She doesn’t know about my father. She doesn’t know about the company. She doesn’t know what happened.*

I looked at Elijah.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

I read the next line.

*If I do this right, she’ll trust me before she finds out the truth.*

My chest tightened.

I looked at Elon.

“What truth?””

He didn’t speak.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because silence was becoming his favorite answer.

Elijah sat down.

“Emma, your family and Elon’s family have history.””

I frowned.

“What kind of history?””

He looked at Elon.

Then back at me.

“Business history.””

I waited.

“That’s not enough.””

Elijah nodded.

“You’re right.””

He took a breath.

“Years ago, your father and Elon’s father were business partners.””

I froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“My father never mentioned that.””

“Because the partnership ended badly.””

I looked at Elon.

“And you knew?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

His voice was quiet.

“Because my father told me.””

I felt sick.

“So when you met me…”

“I knew your last name.””

The room became silent.

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Emma—”

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

“You approached me because of that.””

His face showed pain.

But I needed the answer.

“Did you?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

The word destroyed something inside me.

Not because it surprised me.

Because a small part of me had still hoped he would deny it.

“I loved you.””

The sentence came quickly.

Like he needed to say it.

“I did.””

I laughed softly.

“You loved me after you chose me.””

He looked hurt.

“That’s not fair.””

I stared at him.

“Fair?””

The anger came back.

“You studied me before you dated me.””

“No.””

“You knew my family.””

“I knew your name.””

“You knew enough.””

He looked down.

And that was the truth.

Elijah spoke quietly.

“His father believed your family had ruined him.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Years ago, there was a legal dispute. A company deal collapsed. Both families blamed each other.””

I looked at Elon.

“Was that why?””

He shook his head.

“At first.””

The words made my heart stop.

“At first?””

He swallowed.

“I was angry.””

“And then?””

His eyes met mine.

“Then I got to know you.””

I hated that those words affected me.

Because I remembered.

The beginning.

The way he made me laugh.

The way he brought me coffee.

The way he listened.

Or at least I thought he did.

“I fell in love with you.””

I whispered:

“But you never told me the truth.””

“No.””

“Why?””

He looked broken.

“Because by the time I realized my father was wrong about you, I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Losing you.””

I looked at him.

“You should have been afraid of losing me because of your lies.””

Silence.

Elijah looked down.

“There’s more.””

I turned.

“More?””

He nodded.

“Elon’s father didn’t just want revenge.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did he want?””

Elijah looked at Elon.

And Elon looked terrified.

“He wanted control of your family’s assets.””

I felt dizzy.

“The divorce plan?””

Elijah nodded.

“That was the final step.””

I looked at Elon.

“You were trying to take what belonged to me.””

He didn’t deny it.

“I was trying to fix what my father started.””

My eyes burned.

“So our marriage was what?””

He looked at me.

“Not a plan.””

“Not anymore.””

The words hurt.

Because they meant there had been a plan once.

I picked up the envelope.

The handwritten note.

The proof.

Three years of my life suddenly felt like a question mark.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Rachel.

I opened it.

One sentence.

And my blood ran cold.

*Emma, I just found out why Elon was really desperate to disappear.*

Another message came immediately.

*His father is not the person you should be afraid of.*

I looked at Elon.

He saw my expression.

“What is it?””

I turned the phone toward him.

He read the message.

And all the color left his face.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what Rachel had discovered.

“What does she mean?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I’m done hearing half-truths.””

The room was silent.

Then Elon whispered:

“The person I was running from…”

He looked at the front door.

“He found me.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Elon looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Shame.

“My real father.””

I froze.

“Elon…”

“He’s alive.””

The words hung in the air.

Because everything I thought I knew about my husband…

Was about to change again.

Then the lights in the house suddenly went out.

May you like

And from somewhere outside…

A car door slammed.
