Chapter 2: The Toast He Never Expected
The room became so quiet that I could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.
Elon’s hand slowly slipped away from my shoulder.
For the first time all evening, he looked uncomfortable.
Not guilty.
Not afraid.
Just confused.
He still believed he was in control.
That was the thing about people who lie for too long. They start believing everyone else is acting in the same story they created.
Elon looked at me with a small warning in his eyes.
“Emma,” he said softly, forcing a laugh.
“You’re making it sound serious.””
A few people chuckled.
They thought he was joking.
They didn’t know that six days earlier, I had sat alone on our living room floor and heard my husband tell another woman he hated me.
I tightened my fingers around the glass.
“Actually,” I said, “it is serious.””
My mother-in-law, Linda, leaned forward.
“Is everything okay, sweetheart?””
I looked at her.
For years, she had treated me like the daughter she never had. She had been there when Sophie was born. She had brought us meals when we came home from the hospital.
She deserved the truth.
Everyone did.
I took a slow breath.
“When I married Elon, I promised I would stand beside him through everything.””
Elon shifted in his chair.
“Emma…”
I ignored him.
“I promised to love him when things were easy and when they were difficult. I promised to support him when he was tired, stressed, or overwhelmed.””
My voice stayed calm.
That surprised me.
Because inside, I was shaking.
“But I never promised to stand beside someone who was already walking away.””
The smile disappeared from Elon’s face.
His father, Robert, frowned.
“What does that mean?””
I looked at Elon.
“Maybe my husband would like to explain.””
The room changed instantly.
Everyone looked at him.
He blinked.
“What are you talking about?””
The old me would have backed down.
The old me would have apologized for making things uncomfortable.
The old me would have protected him.
But that woman had disappeared the moment I heard him laugh while saying he wanted to marry someone else.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone.
“I think everyone should hear the same thing I heard.””
Elon’s face went pale.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
And so did his sister, Megan.
“Emma,” Elon said quietly.
There was something different in his voice now.
Not anger.
Fear.
“Don’t do this.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
The room was completely silent.
“Because it’s embarrassing?””
He looked away.
“That’s not what I meant.””
“Then what did you mean?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I pressed play.
The first few seconds were quiet.
Then Elon’s voice filled the room.
“She’s driving me insane.””
My mother covered her mouth.
My father looked toward Elon.
The recording continued.
Every word.
Every cruel sentence.
Every piece of the truth he thought I would never hear.
“I just want her to leave me alone.””
My hands trembled, but I kept holding the phone.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then came the sentence.
The one that changed everything.
“Of course I hate her. I barely touch her anymore. Just wait. I’ll divorce her, and then I’ll marry you.””
A sharp silence followed.
Then the sound of the kiss.
I stopped the recording.
No one needed to hear more.
The damage was already done.
For a moment, Elon looked like he didn’t know where he was.
Like he had stepped into someone else’s nightmare.
Then he stood up.
“You recorded me?””
His voice suddenly became louder.
There it was.
The anger.
Not regret.
Not sadness.
Anger.
I almost laughed.
“You think that’s the problem?””
“You were listening to a private conversation.””
“A conversation you had with another woman while you were still married to me.””
His jaw tightened.
“You’re twisting what happened.””
My father, Daniel, stood up slightly.
“Elon.””
Just one word.
But it carried weight.
Elon looked at him.
“This is between me and my wife.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“She’s your wife. Exactly.””
The room felt smaller.
Linda’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t understand,” she whispered.
“Who is the woman?””
Elon looked at his mother.
Then away.
That was his answer.
Everyone saw it.
“Who is she?”” Linda asked again.
He rubbed his forehead.
“This isn’t how you think.””
I looked at him.
“Then tell us how we should think.””
He said nothing.
Because the truth was simple.
There was no version where he looked good.
Megan stood up.
“Is this why you’ve been staying late?””
Elon turned toward her.
“Don’t get involved.””
Her face changed.
A mix of anger and disappointment.
“You brought everyone into this.””
“I didn’t ask for this dinner to become a public trial.””
I smiled sadly.
“No, Elon. You just forgot to hang up.””
His eyes snapped to mine.
That sentence hit him harder than anything else.
Because it reminded him exactly how this happened.
A mistake.
A careless mistake.
He hadn’t confessed.
He hadn’t chosen honesty.
He had simply failed to end a call.
And now the secret life he had built was standing in front of everyone.
“I was angry,” he said suddenly.
Nobody responded.
“I didn’t mean everything I said.””
I tilted my head.
“You laughed.””
He stopped.
“You laughed while telling her you hated me.””
His face changed.
“I was frustrated.””
“Frustrated enough to promise another woman my place?””
Silence.
The worst part was that he didn’t deny it.
He couldn’t.
The evidence was sitting right there.
Sophie suddenly started crying from Linda’s arms.
The sound broke through the tension.
Linda immediately stood and walked toward me.
“She needs her mother.””
I took Sophie gently.
My daughter’s tiny face pressed against my chest.
And for the first time that night, my eyes filled with tears.
Not because of Elon.
Because of Sophie.
Because I hated that she would grow up with this story attached to her beginning.
Elon watched me holding our daughter.
Something flickered across his face.
Maybe guilt.
Maybe realization.
But it came too late.
“Emma,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
The words sounded small.
Almost meaningless.
Because apologies were supposed to come before destruction.
Not after.
“How long?”” I asked.
His expression froze.
“What?””
“How long have you been with her?””
He looked away.
That was answer enough.
“How long?””
“A few months.””
My chest tightened.
A few months.
While I was recovering from childbirth.
While I was learning how to be a mother.
While I was sitting alone at home wondering why my husband felt so far away.
He had been somewhere else.
With someone else.
My mother closed her eyes.
My father shook his head.
Linda sat down slowly.
“Who is she?””
Elon didn’t answer.
Megan looked at him.
“Is it someone from work?””
Still nothing.
Then his phone buzzed.
The sound was so loud in the silence that everyone heard it.
Elon instinctively reached for it.
I saw the name appear on the screen before he could turn it away.
And the entire room changed.
Because I knew that name.
I had seen it once before.
Months ago.
A name I thought meant nothing.
A name I had forgotten.
Until now.
Linda noticed my expression.
“Emma?””
I looked at Elon’s phone.
Then at him.
“Read it.””
His face went blank.
“What?””
“Read the message.””
“Emma, don’t.””
“Why?””
I smiled.
“Because she might say something you don’t want your family to hear?””
Nobody spoke.
The phone buzzed again.
Another message appeared.
Elon grabbed it too late.
But everyone had already seen enough.
Three words.
Three simple words.
That revealed more than any confession could.
*I miss you.*
The room went completely silent.
And then Linda whispered something that made Elon’s face lose all color.
“Wait…”
She looked between Elon and me.
Then at the phone.
“Is that…”
She stopped.
She didn’t finish the sentence.
She didn’t need to.
Because she recognized the name too.
I watched my husband’s carefully hidden world collapse around him.
But I still didn’t know the worst part.
Not yet.
Because the woman who had been waiting for him to leave me wasn’t a stranger.
May you like
She was someone who had been sitting at our dinner table before.
And when I finally heard her name spoken out loud, I realized Elon’s betrayal was much bigger than I ever imagined.
