Thinking

Chapter 7: The Folder With My Name On It

I stared at the picture Rachel had sent me.

A plain brown folder.

Nothing special.

Nothing dramatic.

Just my name written across the front in black ink.

*EMMA CARTER — PERSONAL*

But somehow those three words felt more frightening than any confession I had heard from Elon.

Because secrets hidden behind someone else’s name were easier to understand.

An affair.

A lie.

A betrayal.

Those were things I could imagine.

But my own name?

My own name sitting inside a folder in a hidden apartment?

That meant Elon had been thinking about me.

Planning around me.

Preparing something that involved me.

And I had no idea what it was.

I looked at the clock.

Almost midnight.

Every reasonable part of me said to wait until morning.

Call my lawyer.

Talk to my family.

Think carefully.

But another part of me — the part that had spent months feeling powerless — needed answers.

I grabbed my coat.

Then I stopped.

I looked toward Sophie’s nursery.

She was sleeping peacefully.

My entire world was in that room.

I couldn’t make reckless decisions anymore.

Not just for myself.

For her.

I walked back to the kitchen and called my mother.

She answered after one ring.

“Emma?””

Her voice was full of worry.

She must have been waiting for my call.

“Mom, can you come over?””

There was no hesitation.

“I’m already getting my keys.””

Twenty minutes later, she was standing at my door wearing slippers and a winter coat over her pajamas.

She looked at my face.

Then she knew.

“Something happened.””

I nodded.

“I found something.””

She stepped inside.

“What?””

I handed her my phone.

She looked at the picture.

Her expression changed.

“What is this?””

“I don’t know.””

I told her everything.

The apartment.

The money.

The lawyer.

The folder.

By the time I finished, my mother was sitting at the kitchen table with both hands wrapped around a cup of tea she hadn’t touched.

“Emma…”

“I know.””

“No, sweetheart.””

She shook her head.

“I don’t think you understand how serious this is.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“If he was gathering documents, moving money, and creating a story about you…”

She paused.

“He wasn’t just thinking about leaving.””

My stomach tightened.

“He was preparing.””

The word felt heavy.

I looked down.

Preparing.

That was exactly what Rachel had said.

A few minutes later, Rachel called.

I almost didn’t answer.

Not because I didn’t need the information.

Because hearing her voice reminded me of everything.

But I answered.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Can you meet me?””

There was a pause.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

The honesty surprised both of us.

“I’m not sure about anything anymore.””

Rachel was quiet.

Then:

“I understand.””

We agreed to meet at a small coffee shop the next morning.

I didn’t tell Elon.

For the first time since I met him, I kept something from him.

And strangely…

It didn’t feel wrong.

The next morning, the coffee shop was almost empty.

Rain tapped against the windows.

The same kind of rain that had fallen the day my world changed.

Rachel sat in the corner.

I recognized her immediately.

She looked different.

Not because she had changed.

Because I finally saw her clearly.

Before, she had been my friend.

Now she was the person who had helped destroy my marriage.

Both things were true.

She stood when she saw me.

“Emma.””

I didn’t hug her.

I didn’t smile.

I simply sat down.

Rachel nodded slowly.

“I deserve that.””

I looked at her.

“You do.””

She accepted it.

No argument.

No excuses.

That surprised me.

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“The folder is inside.””

I stared at it.

“Why didn’t you just send pictures?””

“Because there are things you need to see yourself.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What did you find?””

Rachel looked down.

“Documents.””

“What kind?””

“Financial documents. Emails. Notes.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Notes?””

She nodded.

“Written by Elon.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was the folder.

My hands felt strangely calm.

Almost numb.

I removed the first page.

At the top was a date.

Eight months earlier.

Before Sophie was even born.

I read the first line.

*Potential custody concerns after separation.*

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

Custody.

Before we were even having problems, he was thinking about custody.

I turned the page.

There were notes.

Not official documents.

Not legal papers.

Just personal observations.

Things he had written.

Things he wanted a lawyer to know.

*Emma becomes emotional under stress.*

*Emma has difficulty managing pressure.*

*Emma relies heavily on family support.*

My hands shook.

He had taken normal parts of my life and turned them into evidence.

I flipped another page.

Then I saw something that made me feel sick.

*After childbirth, Emma’s mood changed significantly.*

I closed my eyes.

My postpartum struggles.

My tears.

My exhaustion.

My fear.

Things I had shared with my husband because I trusted him.

He had saved them.

Not to help me.

To use against me.

Rachel watched my face.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I wasn’t angry anymore.

Not exactly.

I was hurt.

A deep, quiet hurt.

The kind that came from realizing someone knew your wounds and chose to press on them.

Then I found another page.

And this one was different.

It wasn’t about me.

It was about Sophie.

My heart stopped.

*Primary custody preference: father.*

I looked at Rachel.

“He wanted custody?””

She nodded.

“I think so.””

I kept reading.

There was a section about finances.

About our house.

About my maternity leave.

Everything.

He had been building a picture.

A picture where he was responsible.

Where I was unstable.

Where he deserved sympathy.

I felt sick.

“He was going to take my daughter.””

Rachel looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“Yes.””

My voice cracked.

“He was.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Rachel said something quietly.

“There’s one more thing.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“There was an email.””

“From who?””

“Elon.””

“To?””

She swallowed.

“A lawyer.””

I felt cold.

“What did it say?””

Rachel looked at me.

“I didn’t read all of it.””

“Why?””

“Because I saw the subject.””

My heart started racing.

“What was it?””

She slowly said:

“Final Plan.””

The rain outside suddenly sounded louder.

Final plan.

Two words.

But they carried everything.

I put the papers back into the folder.

“I need to see it.””

Rachel reached into her bag.

She pulled out a printed email.

“I took this before I left.””

I unfolded it.

The first line was enough.

*If everything goes correctly, Emma will believe the divorce was her choice.*

I stopped reading.

My hands went cold.

I continued.

*The goal is to avoid conflict and make her appear unstable if necessary.*

I looked away.

The words blurred.

Rachel whispered:

“Emma…”

But I kept reading.

Because I needed to know.

I needed every painful truth.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

And that was when I saw something I never expected.

Because Elon’s plan wasn’t just about leaving me.

It wasn’t just about money.

It wasn’t even just about Sophie.

The last sentence said:

*Once Emma signs the documents, the house and remaining assets will be transferred without further complications.*

I stared at the page.

Transferred.

Without further complications.

I read it again.

Then I looked at Rachel.

“He wasn’t planning to divorce me.””

She looked confused.

“What?””

I held up the paper.

“He was planning to make me sign everything.””

The realization settled over me.

Elon didn’t just want a new life.

He wanted my old one too.

My home.

My savings.

My daughter.

My future.

Everything.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

I looked down.

A message from Elon.

Three words.

*We need to talk.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*I know you found the folder.*

My heart stopped.

Because there was only one person who could have told him.

I looked at Rachel.

She looked terrified.

And in that moment, I realized something even worse.

Elon wasn’t just discovering that I knew.

He was already moving.

Because another message appeared.

*Emma, please come home.*

A pause.

May you like

Then the final message.

*Before it’s too late.*
