Chapter 8: The Trap Hidden Inside His Apology
I stared at Elon’s message until the screen went dark.
*Before it’s too late.*
Four words.
A warning.
A threat.
Or maybe another attempt to make me feel responsible for something he created.
For months, Elon had controlled the story.
He decided when we talked.
He decided what I knew.
He decided what was important.
But now, for the first time, he was reacting to me.
And I realized something.
The man who had spent months planning my future without me was suddenly afraid because I had started planning my own.
I looked at Rachel.
“How did he know?””
Her face was pale.
“I don’t know.””
“Did you tell him?””
“No.””
She looked hurt that I even asked.
But I didn’t apologize.
Trust was not something I could hand out anymore.
Not after everything.
Rachel lowered her eyes.
“I swear, Emma. I didn’t.””
I believed her.
Not completely.
Not yet.
But enough.
I looked back at my phone.
Another message appeared.
*Please answer me.*
I placed the phone face down.
Rachel watched me.
“What are you going to do?””
I looked at the folder between us.
The documents.
The lies.
The plan.
Then I looked at her.
“I’m going home.””
Her eyebrows lifted.
“Alone?””
“Yes.””
“Emma…”
“I need him to think I don’t know everything.””
Rachel understood immediately.
“You want him to talk.””
I nodded.
“He spent months preparing for this.””
I closed the folder.
“Now I want to hear his plan from his own mouth.””
When I arrived home, Elon’s car was already in the driveway.
For a second, I felt my heart race.
Not because I missed him.
Because I remembered who he was.
The man I married.
And the man he became.
I sat in the car for several minutes.
I checked the rearview mirror.
My face looked tired.
Older.
But different.
There was something there that hadn’t been there before.
Certainty.
I wasn’t walking into that house as the woman who begged her husband to come home.
I was walking in as someone who knew the truth.
I opened the door.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
“Elon?””
“I’m here.””
His voice came from the living room.
I walked in.
He was standing near the window.
No jacket.
No phone in his hand.
No angry expression.
Just a man trying to look calm.
“I got your messages.””
He nodded.
“I was worried.””
I almost laughed.
“Worried?””
“Yes.””
“About me?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
I sat down.
“Talk.””
He looked surprised.
“That’s it?””
“What do you want me to do?””
I stared at him.
“Scream?””
He looked away.
“I know you’re hurt.””
“That’s an understatement.””
“I made mistakes.””
There it was.
That word again.
Mistakes.
I leaned back.
“How long were you planning this?””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“What?””
“How long?””
He shook his head.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
I almost admired how quickly he lied.
Almost.
“Elon.””
My voice became quiet.
“Don’t make this worse.””
He sat across from me.
“I swear, there are things you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He rubbed his hands together.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing everything.””
I looked at him.
“You mean losing me?””
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“You weren’t afraid of losing me.””
I shook my head.
“You were afraid of losing control.””
His expression hardened.
“That’s not true.””
“Then why did you make a plan?””
The room went silent.
His face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
He knew.
He knew I had seen it.
“How much did you find?””
I smiled sadly.
“So that’s your first question?””
He looked down.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I stood.
“Your first reaction wasn’t ‘I’m sorry.’”
I pointed at him.
“It was ‘how much does she know?’”
He didn’t deny it.
And somehow, that hurt more.
“Why?””
His eyes lifted.
“Because I knew you would see it differently.””
“See what differently?””
“My side.””
I stared at him.
“Your side?””
He stood.
“Yes.””
“You mean the side where you secretly collected information about your wife?””
His jaw tightened.
“I was trying to protect myself.””
“From me?””
“No.””
“Then from who?””
He didn’t answer.
Because the truth was obvious.
He was protecting himself from the consequences.
“I never wanted it to get this far.””
I looked around the room.
The photos.
The memories.
“Our daughter.””
He closed his eyes.
“Don’t.””
“Don’t what?””
“Use Sophie.””
I froze.
Then I understood.
Even now.
Even now, he was trying to make me the problem.
“I’m not using her.””
My voice shook.
“I’m reminding you that she exists.””
He looked away.
“I love my daughter.””
“Then why were you planning to take her away from me?””
His face went blank.
The silence was immediate.
The kind that confirmed everything.
“You saw it.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
He sat down slowly.
For the first time, he looked defeated.
Not because he hurt me.
Because his plan had failed.
“I was scared.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were scared, so you should have talked to me.””
He looked at me.
“I didn’t know how.””
“You didn’t know how to say you were unhappy?””
Silence.
“You didn’t know how to say you wanted something different?””
Silence.
“You knew exactly how.””
I stepped closer.
“You just chose lies because they were easier.””
His eyes filled slightly.
“I never wanted to destroy our family.””
I looked at him.
“But you were willing to.””
He had no response.
Then he whispered:
“I ended things with Rachel.””
I didn’t react.
“She was never the point.””
He looked surprised.
“What?””
“Rachel was never the biggest betrayal.””
His face changed.
“The biggest betrayal was you preparing to make me look like a bad mother so you could win.””
His eyes dropped.
“I didn’t know what the lawyer would do.””
“But you hired one.””
“Yes.””
“And you signed documents.””
“Yes.””
“And you moved money.””
His silence answered.
I nodded.
“I know.””
He looked up.
“How?””
I smiled slightly.
“That’s the first thing you’ve asked me tonight that matters.””
He stared at me.
“Emma…”
“I have people who care about me.””
The words seemed to surprise him.
Because maybe he had believed I was alone.
Maybe he had counted on that.
“I have my family.””
I paused.
“And I have myself.””
His expression softened.
For a moment, I saw the old Elon.
The one I loved.
The one who held my hand at our wedding.
The one who cried when Sophie was born.
And that was the hardest part.
Because losing a villain would have been easier.
But Elon wasn’t a stranger.
He was someone I loved.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who chose to hurt me anyway.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at it.
Ignored it.
It rang again.
This time, he looked worried.
I noticed.
“Who is it?””
He hesitated.
Then answered.
“Hello?””
His face changed within seconds.
“What do you mean?””
He stood.
“No. That wasn’t supposed to happen.””
My heart started beating faster.
Elon turned away from me.
“I told you to wait.””
A pause.
Then:
“You can’t do that now.””
I watched him.
He wasn’t talking like a husband.
He was talking like someone managing a disaster.
When he finally ended the call, I asked:
“Who was that?””
He didn’t answer.
“Elon.””
He looked at me.
And for the first time since this nightmare began…
He looked afraid of me knowing.
“It was my lawyer.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
He swallowed.
Then said:
“The divorce papers were filed.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“I didn’t file them.””
“Then who did?””
He looked at the floor.
And the answer came slowly.
“Rachel.””
I froze.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
“Why would Rachel file for divorce?””
His face became pale.
“Because she found out something I didn’t want either of you to know.””
My heart pounded.
“What?””
He looked at me.
And this time, there was no manipulation in his eyes.
Only fear.
“She wasn’t the only person I was planning to leave.””
I felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
He whispered:
“Emma…”
A pause.
Then:
“I wasn’t planning to start a new life.””
His voice dropped.
“I was planning to disappear.””
I stared at him.
The room seemed to spin.
Because suddenly the affair, the money, the documents…
They all felt like pieces of a much larger puzzle.
“What are you saying?””
He looked toward the window.
Then back at me.
“I wasn’t running away from you.””
A long silence.
“I was running from something else.””
My heart stopped.
“From what?””
Before he could answer, someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Elon went completely still.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
I looked at him.
“Who is that?””
He didn’t answer.
The knocking came again.
Then a man’s voice called from outside.
“Elon?””
My husband’s face went white.
Because he knew that voice.
May you like
And whoever was standing on the other side of that door…
Was someone he had been hiding from long before he ever met me.
