Thinking

Chapter 4: The Lies Behind His Lies

The message from Rachel stayed open on my phone for almost five minutes.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t blink.

I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to know the truth or whether I was already exhausted from learning too much.

Because there was something terrifying about betrayal.

It wasn’t just the moment you discovered it.

It was the realization that every memory you trusted had to be examined again.

Every smile.

Every excuse.

Every “I love you.””

You started wondering which parts were real and which parts were just performances.

Sophie stirred beside me in her crib.

I quickly placed my phone down and leaned over her.

“Mommy’s here,” I whispered.

She opened her tiny eyes for a moment, then reached her little hand toward my finger.

That small gesture broke something inside me.

Because no matter what happened between Elon and me, I had to stay strong for her.

I picked up my phone again.

The message was still there.

*Emma, I think you deserve to know the truth about what Elon has been telling me.*

My thumb hovered over the screen.

Then I opened the rest.

*I know you probably hate me. I understand why. But before you decide what you think happened, please read everything. Elon has not been honest with either of us.*

I frowned.

Not honest with either of us?

I kept reading.

*He told me you two had been separated emotionally for months. He told me you both agreed the marriage was over but were staying together because of Sophie.*

My heart sank.

I stared at the words.

Separated?

Over?

I almost laughed.

Because I remembered that morning.

The morning Elon kissed my forehead before leaving for work.

The morning he told me, “I love you.””

The morning I packed his lunch because I thought taking care of him was what love looked like.

Apparently, he had already decided we were finished.

Without telling me.

I continued.

*He said you knew about me. He said you didn’t care anymore. He said you were only waiting for him to make the first move.*

My hands started shaking.

That was impossible.

It wasn’t just cheating.

He had created an entire fake version of our marriage.

A version where he was the victim.

A version where he was the unhappy husband trapped in a relationship he didn’t want.

I read the final lines.

*I believed him. I was wrong. I should have asked you directly. I’m sorry.*

I locked my phone.

Then unlocked it again.

I needed to make sure I had read it correctly.

I hadn’t misunderstood.

Elon had lied to both of us.

The next morning, I woke up after barely sleeping.

The sunlight coming through the bedroom curtains felt almost cruel.

The world looked normal.

Cars drove by.

Neighbors walked their dogs.

People went to work.

Nobody knew that my entire life had changed overnight.

I made coffee.

Then I realized I still automatically made two cups.

I stared at the second mug.

A habit.

That was the hardest part.

Not losing the person.

Losing all the tiny things your body did without thinking.

I poured the extra coffee down the sink.

Then my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Elon.

For a few seconds, I just watched it vibrate.

The old version of me would have answered immediately.

The old version of me would have worried.

Is he okay? Is he angry? Does he need me?

But I wasn’t that woman anymore.

I let it ring.

A minute later, a message appeared.

*Can we talk?*

Another one.

*Please.*

Then another.

*I need to explain.*

I looked at those words.

Explain.

Everyone who got caught had an explanation.

But explanations were not the same as accountability.

I placed the phone on the table.

Ten minutes later, there was a knock at the door.

I froze.

I knew who it was.

I walked to the window.

Elon stood outside.

He looked exhausted.

Not broken.

Not destroyed.

Just uncomfortable.

Like someone who had finally realized the consequences of his actions.

I opened the door but didn’t invite him in.

“What do you want?””

His eyes moved behind me.

He looked at the house.

The family photos.

The toys on the floor.

The life he almost threw away.

“Can I come inside?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

He swallowed.

“Emma, please.””

“Why?””

He looked confused.

“Because we need to talk.””

“We talked last night.””

“No, we fought.””

I stared at him.

“You called it a fight?””

His face changed.

“I know I hurt you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You know you got caught.””

He looked away.

That silence told me everything.

“Elon, when were you going to tell me?””

He didn’t answer.

“When were you going to come home and say, ‘Emma, I’ve been lying to you for months, and I want a divorce’?””

His jaw tightened.

“I didn’t know how.””

I laughed quietly.

“That’s convenient.””

He stepped closer.

“I was confused.””

“You weren’t confused when you kissed her.””

His face went pale.

“You heard that?””

“Yes.””

The embarrassment crossed his face.

But again, I noticed something.

He was embarrassed about being exposed.

Not about doing it.

“I ended things with her.””

I stared at him.

“Already?””

“Yes.””

“That was fast.””

He looked frustrated.

“Emma, what do you want me to say?””

“The truth.””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re telling me whatever makes this easier for you.””

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he said something I never expected.

“She contacted you, didn’t she?””

I didn’t answer.

His expression changed.

“She did.””

I crossed my arms.

“Why does that matter?””

“Because she’s trying to make herself look innocent.””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He was still trying to control the story.

“She told me what you told her.””

His face froze.

“What?””

“She told me you said we were basically separated.””

Silence.

“You told her I knew.””

He looked down.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He had no answer.

“When Sophie graduated college?””

He flinched.

I continued.

“You made me the villain in your story because it made cheating easier.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing.

For the first time, he had no prepared response.

Finally, he whispered:

“I felt like you didn’t need me anymore.””

The words surprised me.

Not because they hurt.

Because they revealed how little he understood.

“I needed you more than ever.””

My voice cracked.

“I needed you when I couldn’t sleep.””

“I needed you when I was scared I was failing as a mother.””

“I needed you when Sophie cried for hours and I didn’t know what to do.””

I stepped closer.

“And instead of telling me you felt distant, you found someone who made you feel wanted.””

He looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

I nodded slowly.

“I know.””

He looked up.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“I know you’re sorry that your life got complicated.””

His expression fell.

“But I don’t know if you’re sorry that you hurt me.””

The silence between us was unbearable.

Then he said:

“I love you.””

Four words.

Four words that once meant everything.

Now they felt empty.

I looked at him.

“I don’t know if you love me.””

His eyes widened.

“I do.””

“Maybe you do.””

I took a breath.

“But love isn’t just a feeling you have when someone is convenient.””

The words stayed between us.

He looked older suddenly.

Like the person standing there wasn’t the same man who walked out the night before.

But I knew something.

A broken trust didn’t disappear because someone finally apologized.

It took more than words.

Much more.

Before he left, he turned around.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“Rachel wasn’t the only thing I lied about.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation scared me more than anything he had already admitted.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

I stepped forward.

“What?””

He looked toward the street.

Then back at me.

“I didn’t meet Rachel by accident.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“What are you saying?””

He opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And his entire expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

He answered.

“Hello?””

I watched his face lose color.

Then I heard the words that made my blood run cold.

“Wait… how did you find out?””

He looked at me.

May you like

And I knew whoever was on the other end of that call had just revealed something Elon never wanted me to discover.

Something much bigger than an affair.
