Chapter 6: The Plan Hidden Behind the Affair
I couldn’t speak.
The words echoed in my mind.
He was hiding a plan to take something from you.
For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
The betrayal I thought I understood suddenly became something much larger.
An affair was cruel.
A secret relationship was devastating.
But a plan?
Plans required intention.
Thought.
Preparation.
I looked around my quiet house.
The nursery.
The family photos.
The life I had spent years building.
And suddenly, everything felt unfamiliar.
“What documents?”” I asked.
My voice barely sounded like mine.
Rachel took a shaky breath on the other end.
“I found them in his apartment.””
I froze.
“His apartment?””
“Yes.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“He has an apartment?””
There was a pause.
A terrible pause.
And I already knew the answer before she spoke.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I stood up.
“No, don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Say my name like you’re sorry before telling me something else that destroys my life.””
Rachel went quiet.
For once, she didn’t defend herself.
Maybe because she knew she had no right.
“I didn’t know,” she whispered.
I closed my eyes.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Is it?””
The question came out sharper than I intended.
But I was tired.
Tired of everyone being surprised.
Tired of discovering the truth only after someone else made a mistake.
Rachel was silent.
Then she said:
“I found out he had been renting it six months ago.””
Six months.
I felt my stomach twist.
Six months ago, I was at home with a newborn baby.
Six months ago, I was waking up every night.
Six months ago, I was sending Elon pictures of Sophie because I wanted him to feel included.
And he had another place.
A hidden life.
“Why would he need an apartment?””
Rachel answered quietly.
“I thought it was because of us.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Because he was planning to leave me?””
“Yes.””
“And now?””
Another pause.
“Now I think I was wrong.””
I walked to the kitchen window.
Outside, our neighbor’s porch light was glowing.
Everything looked normal.
That almost made it worse.
“What documents did you find?””
Rachel hesitated.
“I took pictures.””
“Send them.””
“Emma…”
“Send them.””
My voice was firm.
I wasn’t asking.
A few seconds later, my phone buzzed.
One image.
Then another.
I opened the first.
At first, I didn’t understand what I was seeing.
It was a printed document.
A financial statement.
Then I saw Elon’s name.
And below it…
A list of accounts.
My heart started beating faster.
“What is this?””
Rachel answered.
“I don’t know everything. But I know he was moving money.””
I zoomed in.
Numbers.
Dates.
Transfers.
Some I recognized.
Some I didn’t.
Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.
A transfer from our joint savings account.
Not a huge amount.
But enough.
Enough to make me realize this had been happening quietly.
“How much?””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
“Emma…”
“How much?””
“Over the past year?””
My voice became a whisper.
“How much?””
“Almost forty thousand dollars.””
I sat down.
The chair scraped against the floor.
Forty thousand.
Money we had saved.
Money I thought was for our future.
For Sophie.
For emergencies.
For a house someday.
“What did he do with it?””
Rachel’s voice lowered.
“I don’t know.””
I looked at the documents again.
Then I saw another page.
A lawyer’s name.
My heart stopped.
“Rachel.””
“Yes?””
“Why is there a lawyer?””
Silence.
Then:
“I was hoping you wouldn’t see that.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel exhaled.
“Emma, I think Elon was preparing for a divorce.””
I almost laughed.
“Obviously.””
“No.””
Her voice became urgent.
“I mean a very specific kind of divorce.””
I stared at the page.
“What kind?””
“A divorce where he was trying to protect himself.””
The room went silent.
I understood.
“He was planning to blame me.””
“Yes.””
My hands trembled.
“He was building a case.””
“I think so.””
“For what?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
And that scared me.
“For what?”” I repeated.
Finally, she whispered:
“He told me you were unstable after the baby.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because that was my fear.
My deepest insecurity.
After Sophie was born, I had struggled.
I cried more.
I felt overwhelmed.
Some days I didn’t recognize myself.
I had worried I wasn’t good enough.
And Elon knew that.
He knew exactly where I was vulnerable.
“He told you that?””
“Yes.””
“What else?””
Rachel was quiet.
Then:
“He said you were becoming difficult.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Difficult.””
“He said you were emotional all the time.””
I looked toward the nursery.
My daughter.
My reason.
“He made me sound crazy.””
Rachel didn’t deny it.
Because she knew.
“Elon said he was afraid you would try to keep Sophie from him.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He said you would use the baby against him.””
I stood up.
“That’s insane.””
“Yes.””
Rachel’s voice cracked.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
“You don’t know what it feels like to realize someone you love was collecting your worst moments.””
Rachel became silent.
I knew she understood.
But it wasn’t the same.
It would never be the same.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
I looked at the phone.
The apology didn’t fix anything.
But for the first time, I heard something different.
Not excuses.
Not manipulation.
Regret.
“Why are you helping me?””
The question surprised her.
“What?””
“Why?””
A long pause.
Then she answered honestly.
“Because I realized I wasn’t the person he loved.””
I said nothing.
“He didn’t love me.””
Her voice broke.
“He loved the version of himself he got to be with me.””
I listened.
“He was always complaining about you. Always saying he was trapped. Always saying he deserved happiness.””
She swallowed.
“But when I asked him when he would actually leave…”
Her voice became quieter.
“He always had another reason.””
I looked at the documents.
“He was never going to leave.””
“No.””
“Then what was he going to do?””
Rachel hesitated.
“I don’t know.””
That answer bothered me.
Because it meant there was still something missing.
“Did he say anything else?””
“No.””
“Think.””
Rachel was quiet for a moment.
Then suddenly:
“Wait.””
My body went still.
“What?””
“There was another folder.””
“What folder?””
“At his apartment.””
My heart raced.
“What was inside?””
“I don’t know.””
“You opened it?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I heard him coming.””
I stared at the wall.
“When?””
“Yesterday.””
Yesterday.
Before the dinner.
Before everything exploded.
“He was at the apartment yesterday?””
“Yes.””
“Did he know you were there?””
“No.””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“Rachel, where is the folder now?””
Silence.
Too long.
“Rachel.””
“I have it.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where?””
“I didn’t know if I should give it to you.””
“Why?””
“Because I’m scared of what’s inside.””
The honesty in her voice made me pause.
Then she said:
“Emma, I think you should see it.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What’s inside?””
Another pause.
Then Rachel whispered:
“Your name.””
I froze.
“My name?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
The house suddenly felt too quiet.
Too empty.
I looked toward the hallway.
At the room where Elon and I had once dreamed about our future.
A future he had apparently been planning to destroy.
“Send me a picture.””
“I will.””
My phone buzzed.
One image.
A brown folder.
On the front, written in black ink:
*EMMA CARTER — PERSONAL*
I stared at my own name.
My heart pounded.
Rachel sent another message.
*There’s something else you need to know.*
I typed back.
*What?*
The reply came immediately.
*The folder wasn’t hidden from you.*
I frowned.
*What do you mean?*
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally, her message arrived.
*It was hidden for you to find.*
I stopped breathing.
Because suddenly I understood.
Maybe Elon wasn’t just preparing for the end of our marriage.
Maybe he was preparing for something after it.
May you like
Something much more dangerous.
And somewhere inside that folder was the reason why.
