Chapter 8: The Daughter Hidden Away
The police officer’s words echoed in my head.
*Your daughter was taken by someone inside this hospital.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked at me.
Neither of us said Ethan’s name.
We didn't need to.
Everyone in that room already knew.
The man who had claimed to be protecting the truth had taken the one person I needed to find.
My daughter.
Emma.
I looked at Lily.
She was still staring at the photograph.
“Sweetheart.””
She looked up.
“Are you sure?””
She nodded.
“The scar.””
Her tiny finger touched the side of her own face.
“He had a scar here.””
The officer stepped closer.
“Lily, can you tell me anything else?””
I immediately moved beside her.
“Only if she wants to.””
The officer nodded.
“Of course.””
Lily hugged her rabbit.
“He smelled like smoke.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
“He had a silver watch.””
The officer wrote it down.
“And what did he say?””
Lily looked at Vanessa.
My wife looked away.
That reaction told me everything.
“Lily,” I said gently.
“What did he say?””
She whispered:
“He said he was taking me to my sister.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What sister?””
Her lips parted.
“I don't know.””
I stared at her.
“Don't.””
“Daniel—”
“Don't tell me you don't know.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
The officer looked between us.
“Mrs. Carter?””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
“She told me once.””
“Told you what?””
“That Emma had a sister.””
I felt a chill.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
“Her.””
I couldn't speak.
The pieces were moving.
The hidden box.
The letter.
The swapped babies.
Ethan’s obsession.
Lily knowing him.
Vanessa’s fear.
But one thing still didn't make sense.
“If Ethan took Emma,” I said, “why did he come here?””
Nobody answered.
Then the hospital doors opened.
A nurse rushed in.
“Officer?””
Everyone turned.
She was holding a phone.
“We found something.””
The officer walked over.
“What?””
“The security footage from the parking garage.””
She handed him the phone.
He watched.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“Show me.””
He hesitated.
Then turned the screen.
The video showed Ethan leaving the hospital.
But he wasn't alone.
A child sat in the back seat.
Emma.
I felt my knees weaken.
But then the video continued.
A second figure appeared.
A woman.
Older.
Dark coat.
The officer paused the video.
I stared.
“Who is that?””
Vanessa's face went white.
“No.””
“Who?””
She took a step back.
“No.””
“Vanessa.””
She covered her mouth.
“That’s impossible.””
The officer looked at her.
“Do you know her?””
Vanessa whispered:
“My mother.””
Nobody moved.
The officer frowned.
“Your mother is deceased.””
“I know.””
“Then who is she?””
Vanessa stared at the screen.
The woman turned slightly toward the camera.
Even through the blurry image, there was something familiar.
The same sharp eyes.
The same posture.
The same cold expression I had seen in old photographs.
Evelyn Price.
My wife’s dead mother.
Alive.
I felt sick.
“She’s alive,” Vanessa whispered.
The officer immediately looked serious.
“Are you certain?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“I know my mother.””
I looked at her.
“You told me she was dead.””
“She is.””
“That woman is standing in a parking garage.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I watched her die.””
The room became silent.
“How?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Cancer.””
“When?””
“Three years ago.””
The same time Clara Reed died.
The same time everything changed.
The same time Evelyn supposedly disappeared.
I looked at the officer.
“What do we know about this woman?””
He shook his head.
“Not yet.””
The nurse spoke quietly.
“There’s another thing.””
“What?””
“The footage wasn't supposed to exist.””
The officer looked at her.
“Explain.””
“The cameras were disabled.””
“Then how did we get this?””
She swallowed.
“Someone restored them remotely.””
My skin prickled.
“Who?””
The nurse looked at the phone.
“An account registered under Daniel Carter.””
I froze.
“What?””
The officer looked at me.
“Did you access hospital security?””
“No.””
“Has anyone else used your accounts?””
“No.””
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Unknown number.
A message.
*You are finally seeing what she is capable of.*
Another message arrived.
*Meet me if you want Emma alive.*
Then a location.
An abandoned warehouse.
My first instinct was to go.
Immediately.
But Ethan had already proven he could manipulate people.
So had Evelyn.
So had Vanessa.
Everyone had been pulling strings.
I looked at the officer.
“I need to go.””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
I looked at him.
“No?””
“You can't walk into a possible trap.””
“My daughter is there.””
“We don't know that.””
“I saw her.””
“We saw a video.””
I stepped closer.
“You don't have a child missing.””
His expression softened.
“No.””
“But I do.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“I'll go.””
Everyone looked at her.
I laughed once.
“No.””
“I need to.””
“You've lied enough.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“But this is my fault.””
I stared at her.
For the first time all night, she wasn't defending herself.
She wasn't making excuses.
She was accepting the damage.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“I should have protected both girls.””
“Yes.””
“I should never have let my mother control me.””
I didn't answer.
Vanessa wiped her face.
“But Emma is out there.””
She looked at Lily.
“And Lily needs her sister.””
Lily walked toward her.
Everyone froze.
Vanessa looked down.
“Lily…”
My daughter reached up.
She didn't hug Vanessa.
Not yet.
She just held her hand.
“You should have told Daddy.””
Vanessa broke.
“I know.””
“You scared me.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
Vanessa cried silently.
“Because I was scared too.””
Lily looked at her.
Then whispered:
“Grandma was scary.””
I felt a chill.
Vanessa looked up sharply.
“What did you say?””
Lily looked confused.
“Grandma.””
“Which grandma?””
“The one in the picture.””
My heart stopped.
“What picture?””
Lily pointed at the old photograph.
“Her.””
She touched Evelyn’s face.
“I saw her before.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“When?””
Lily thought.
“In the room.””
“What room?””
“My bedroom.””
Nobody spoke.
“Lily,” I said carefully, “when did Grandma come into your bedroom?””
She shrugged.
“Sometimes.””
My blood ran cold.
“Sometimes?””
“She watched me sleep.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No.””
“When?””
“After you and Mommy yelled.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“I didn't know.””
“You didn't know your dead mother was visiting our daughter?””
“I didn't!””
Lily continued.
“She told me not to tell Daddy.””
Everything went silent.
My entire body went cold.
“What else did she say?””
Lily looked down.
“She said I wasn't supposed to be here.””
Vanessa started crying.
“Lily…”
“She said my real family was waiting.””
I looked at the photo.
Evelyn.
A woman who had spent years moving children like objects.
A woman who had stolen identities.
A woman who was supposedly dead.
I looked at the message.
The warehouse location.
Then at Lily.
Someone had been watching my family for years.
Someone had been inside my home.
Someone had known exactly how to hurt us.
I turned to the officer.
“I’m going.””
He shook his head.
“Mr. Carter—”
“I’m going.””
Vanessa stood.
“I’m coming.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Daniel.””
“You’re staying with Lily.””
Her eyes filled.
“After everything?””
“Yes.””
The words hurt both of us.
But they were true.
“You protect her.””
I looked at Mason.
“And him.””
Mason nodded.
The officer sighed.
“Fine.””
He reached for his radio.
“We’ll coordinate.””
“No.””
He frowned.
“What?””
“If Ethan or Evelyn sees police, Emma disappears.””
“That’s a risk.””
“I know.””
I looked at the message again.
The location.
The countdown timer underneath.
Five minutes.
I hadn't noticed it before.
Five minutes until the meeting.
I turned toward the exit.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
This time, I answered.
“Where is my daughter?””
A woman’s voice responded.
Older.
Calm.
Cold.
“Daniel.””
I froze.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
She recognized the voice too.
“Evelyn.””
The woman laughed softly.
“I wondered how long it would take you to figure everything out.””
My grip tightened.
“Where is Emma?””
“Safe.””
“Let me talk to her.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because you still don't understand.””
“Understand what?””
A pause.
Then:
“Lily was never the child I wanted.””
I looked back at my daughter.
“And Emma?””
The woman’s voice softened.
“Emma was always mine.””
The call ended.
And before I could move, another message appeared.
Not from Evelyn.
From Ethan.
*Daniel, don't go to the warehouse.*
I stared.
A second message appeared.
*She wants you there because she knows the truth will destroy Vanessa.*
Then one final message:
*I took Emma to save her from Evelyn.*
I looked at the two names on my phone.
Evelyn.
Ethan.
Both claiming they were protecting my daughter.
Both lying.
And somewhere between them was Emma.
The daughter I had never held.
The child I had spent five years missing without knowing.
I looked at the clock.
Four minutes left.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Daniel.””
I turned.
She was holding another envelope.
One I had never seen before.
Her hands were shaking.
“I found this in my mother's room after she died.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn't you show me?””
She looked at the front.
Because written there was one sentence:
*For Daniel Carter. The father of both my grandchildren.*
I opened it.
May you like
And the first line inside made me forget how to breathe.
*One of the girls in your house is not who you think she is.*
