Chapter 5: The Man at the Door

The stranger stood behind the glass doors with an old photograph clutched in one hand.

He didn't knock.

He didn't wave.

He simply looked at me.

Then at Lily.

And smiled.

Not warmly.

Not angrily.

Like a man who had finally found something he'd spent years searching for.

My arms tightened around my daughter.

Mason stepped behind me.

Vanessa couldn't move.

Ethan stood beside us, staring at the man through the glass.

“That's him,” Vanessa whispered.

I looked at her.

“Who?””

She swallowed.

“Jonathan Reed.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant everything to her.

Jonathan took one slow step forward.

The security doors remained locked.

A hospital guard moved toward him.

“Sir, you need to remain in the lobby.””

Jonathan held up the photograph.

“I'm here for her.””

His finger pointed directly at Lily.

My stomach turned.

I stepped forward.

“You're not touching my daughter.””

Jonathan's gaze shifted to me.

“You're Daniel Carter.””

“Yes.””

“I've heard a lot about you.””

“I haven't heard anything about you.””

He gave a small, almost disappointed smile.

“That was intentional.””

Ethan moved between us.

“Jonathan, this ends tonight.””

Jonathan looked at him.

“You said that five years ago.””

“I meant it.””

“You've never meant anything you said.””

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“Don't come any closer.””

Jonathan laughed softly.

“You still think you can protect them.””

“Who are you talking about?”” I demanded.

Jonathan raised the photograph.

“A child.””

He turned it around.

My breath caught.

It was another newborn.

Different blanket.

Different hospital room.

Different mother.

A young woman I didn't recognize was crying while holding the baby.

Written on the back in faded ink was a date.

The same date Lily had been born.

My eyes moved to the baby.

Then to Vanessa.

“Who is that?””

She looked away.

I stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

Her lips trembled.

“I don't know.””

Jonathan spoke.

“Yes, you do.””

He pressed his palm against the glass.

“That baby was mine.””

Silence.

I felt like I'd been punched.

“Your baby?””

“My daughter.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Jonathan's expression hardened.

“My daughter was born that night.””

“You weren't there,” Vanessa whispered.

“I was.””

“You weren't supposed to be.””

“I know.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Daniel, don't listen to him.””

I turned.

“Why?””

“Because he'll tell you whatever he needs to.””

Jonathan called through the glass.

“Ask them where the second birth certificate is.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What second birth certificate?””

She didn't answer.

I turned to Ethan.

“You said you brought proof.””

He opened the folder.

“There's another birth record.””

He handed it to me.

The paper was older than the others.

I scanned it.

Mother:

*Vanessa Price.*

Father:

*Jonathan Reed.*

Child:

*Female, unnamed.*

I looked at the date.

My hands began to shake.

The exact date.

The exact hospital.

The same night Lily was born.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You told me you had no idea who Lily's father was.””

“I didn't know.””

“You did.””

“I knew his name.””

“That's not the same thing?””

“I was nineteen!””

“You're not nineteen anymore.””

She flinched.

I looked at the birth record again.

“Where is this child?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I don't know.””

Jonathan shouted from the lobby.

“She was stolen.””

The guard warned him again.

“Sir, lower your voice.””

Jonathan ignored him.

“She was taken from that hospital before sunrise.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Did your mother do it?””

He didn't answer.

“Ethan.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

My entire body went cold.

“What did she do?””

“She paid someone.””

“For what?””

“To switch the babies.””

Vanessa covered her face.

I stared at her.

“You knew.””

“I found out later.””

“How much later?””

“Months.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I was terrified.””

“You let me believe Lily was mine.””

“You loved her!””

“That wasn't your decision to make!””

“I know!””

Her voice shattered across the waiting room.

Everyone nearby turned to look.

Vanessa stood trembling.

“I know, Daniel.””

She wiped her face.

“I know what I did.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

She looked at Lily.

“When she was born, my mother came into the room.””

“Evelyn.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She told me everything was going to be fixed.””

“What did she mean?””

“She said I'd never have to worry about being a mother.””

My skin prickled.

“I don't understand.””

“She told me the baby would have a good family.””

I glanced at Lily.

“And she took her?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

“My mother brought another baby into the hospital.””

I stopped breathing.

“She said the mothers had agreed.””

“Which mothers?””

“I didn't know.””

Jonathan shouted again from behind the glass.

“She never agreed!””

Security moved closer to him.

Vanessa continued.

“My mother told me the other woman couldn't keep her child.””

“And you believed her?””

“I was young.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it matters!””

She stepped toward me.

“You don't understand what my mother was like.””

“Then make me understand.””

“She controlled everything.””

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“She controlled where I lived. Who I saw. What I ate. She threatened to take the baby away from me.””

I looked at Lily.

Something about that sentence struck me.

What my wife had done to Lily with food suddenly felt disturbingly familiar.

I stared at Vanessa.

“Did she treat you the same way?””

Vanessa looked startled.

“What?””

“Did your mother control your food?””

Her eyes filled again.

“Yes.””

I thought about the locked pantry.

The hidden snacks.

The fear in Lily's face when Vanessa raised her voice.

A pattern was forming.

One I didn't want to see.

“Is that why you do it to Lily?””

Vanessa froze.

“I don't…”

“You were raised this way.””

“I said I don't!””

Jonathan suddenly slammed his fist against the glass.

Vanessa jumped.

The guard grabbed his arm.

He shouted, “Ask her what happened to the other mother!””

I turned toward him.

“What other mother?””

Jonathan stared at Vanessa.

“The woman who came looking for her baby.””

Vanessa began crying.

I walked toward the glass.

“Who was she?””

Jonathan's face softened.

“My wife.””

“Where is she?””

He looked at the floor.

“She died.””

The words hung there.

“How?””

“Three years ago.””

My chest tightened.

The same year Evelyn died.

“The year your mother died,” Jonathan continued, “my wife finally found out what happened.””

Vanessa whispered, “No.””

“She learned her baby had been switched with another newborn.””

“What did she do?””

“She confronted Evelyn.””

“And?””

Jonathan's eyes filled with rage.

“She disappeared two days later.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Did your mother kill her?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Jonathan laughed bitterly.

“That's what Evelyn wanted everyone to believe.””

“What actually happened?””

Jonathan stepped closer to the glass.

“She left something behind.””

“What?””

“A letter.””

My pulse quickened.

“Where?””

Jonathan looked directly at Lily.

“With the child.””

I turned toward my daughter.

“What child?””

Jonathan's expression changed.

“The baby my wife gave birth to.””

I stared.

“Lily?””

He nodded.

“No.””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“Lily isn't hers.””

Jonathan's eyes snapped toward her.

“Then whose baby is she?””

Vanessa couldn't answer.

I felt the room spinning.

Everything we'd believed about Lily had become a maze of swapped records, dead parents, hidden documents, and people who had spent five years lying.

Then a nurse hurried into the waiting room.

“Daniel Carter?””

I stepped toward her.

“Yes.””

She was carrying a sealed plastic evidence bag.

“I was told to give this to you.””

“By whom?””

“I don't know.””

She handed it over.

Inside was a tiny hospital bracelet.

Pink.

Faded.

The name written across it was barely visible.

I held it against the light.

*BABY REED.*

My heart stopped.

Jonathan stared at it.

His face crumpled.

“That's hers.””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“That bracelet was destroyed.””

“Why?””

“Because my mother made me burn it.””

I stared at the bracelet.

Then at Lily.

Then at Jonathan.

The nurse suddenly looked frightened.

“There's something else.””

“What?””

She pointed toward the hallway.

“Someone left this outside the records office.””

I took the second item.

An envelope.

My name was written on the front.

But this time, underneath it were four words:

*OPEN ONLY AFTER ASKING LILY.*

I looked down at my daughter.

She was awake now.

Her eyes were fixed on the envelope.

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Daddy…”

I crouched beside her.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

She pointed at the envelope.

“I've seen that before.””

“Where?””

“At Mommy's house.””

“When?””

She looked toward Vanessa.

“Every time the man with the scar came.””

Vanessa's face went white.

Jonathan suddenly slammed both hands against the glass.

“Don't open it here!””

Ethan spun toward him.

“Why?””

Jonathan looked directly at me.

“Because whatever is inside that envelope will tell you which baby Vanessa brought home.””

The hospital doors unlocked.

A security alarm sounded.

And before anyone could stop him, Jonathan disappeared through a side corridor.

Ethan ran after him.

I stayed frozen beside Lily.

Then Vanessa whispered the sentence I had been dreading.

“Daniel…”

May you like

I looked at her.

“She brought home the wrong baby.””
