Chapter 4: The Woman Who Should Be Dead

I stared at the message until the letters blurred.

*Now ask Vanessa why her dead mother is still signing documents.*

The hospital lights buzzed above us.

A baby cried somewhere down the hallway.

A nurse pushed a cart past the reception desk.

The world continued moving like nothing had happened.

But my world had stopped.

I slowly lowered my phone.

“Vanessa.””

She didn't look at me.

“Daniel…”

“Explain.””

Her face was pale.

“I can't.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn't know what else to do.

“That’s your answer to everything.””

“Because you don't understand.””

“No. Because you keep deciding what I can handle.””

She looked at Lily.

My daughter was still asleep against my shoulder.

“Not in front of her.””

I looked down at Lily.

Then back at Vanessa.

“You should have thought about that before hiding food from her.””

The words hit her.

She looked away.

The receptionist cleared her throat.

“I’m sorry, but I need to ask you both to leave the desk area.””

I nodded.

“Thank you.””

I carried Lily toward the waiting area.

Mason followed silently.

Vanessa sat across from us.

For the first time in years, she looked like a stranger.

Not my wife.

Not the woman I had promised forever.

A stranger with secrets buried under my roof.

I sat beside Mason.

“Are you okay?””

He nodded.

But he wasn't.

I could see it.

His leg bounced nervously.

His fingers kept pulling at his sleeve.

“Hey.””

He looked at me.

“You can tell me anything.””

He swallowed.

“Even if Mom gets mad?””

“Yes.””

“Even if it's about Lily?””

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“I heard her crying once.””

“When?””

“Last month.””

“Who?””

“Lily.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

Mason glanced at Vanessa.

She was staring at the floor.

“She asked Mom why she couldn't have snacks.””

“And?””

“Mom said…”

He stopped.

“What did she say?””

Mason whispered, “She said Lily wasn't really ours.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Vanessa looked up.

“Mason.””

He jumped.

I stood.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I never said that.””

“He heard you.””

“I was angry.””

“You were talking about a five-year-old.””

“I didn't mean it.””

I looked at her.

“That doesn't make it disappear.””

She covered her face.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Silence.

“Vanessa.””

She finally looked at me.

“Of losing her.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She stared at Lily.

“After everything that happened… I thought someone would come back for her.””

The waiting room suddenly felt colder.

“Who?””

She didn't answer.

“Ethan?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Her voice broke.

“My mother.””

I sat down slowly.

“Your mother has been dead for three years.””

“Yes.””

“Then how can she come back?””

Vanessa looked at the hospital entrance.

“She didn't.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then why did you say that?””

“Because before she died, she told me something.””

“What?””

“That Lily wasn't safe with us.””

I looked at Lily.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa rubbed her hands together.

“She said if anyone ever came looking for Lily, I had to run.””

“Who was looking?””

“I don't know.””

“You always say that.””

“Because I don't know.””

I leaned forward.

“Vanessa, you need to start knowing.””

She closed her eyes.

“My mother had secrets.””

“Everyone has secrets.””

“Not like hers.””

The automatic doors opened.

A man walked into the waiting room.

Tall.

Dark jacket.

Rainwater dripping from his shoulders.

I recognized him immediately.

The photograph.

The scar.

Ethan Price.

Vanessa stood so quickly her chair scraped the floor.

“No.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Hello, Vanessa.””

Her face drained.

“Why are you here?””

He ignored her.

His eyes moved to me.

Then to Lily.

Then to Mason.

“I see you finally found the box.””

I stepped in front of my children.

“How do you know about that?””

Ethan smiled faintly.

“Because I put it there.””

Vanessa whispered, “What?””

My jaw tightened.

“You hid it?””

“No.””

He looked at her.

“I left it.””

“Why?””

“To make sure Daniel learned the truth.””

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“You had no right.””

Ethan looked at her coldly.

“You had no right either.””

The words hung between them.

I stepped closer.

“Who are you?””

Ethan looked at me.

“You already know.””

“Then explain why you're sending me pictures of my daughter.””

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Something closer to regret.

“Because she is my niece.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No, Ethan.””

He looked at Lily.

“Her name was never supposed to be Lily.””

My chest tightened.

I grabbed his jacket.

Mason gasped.

Security immediately looked over.

I released him.

“Talk.””

Ethan adjusted his coat.

“Five years ago, Vanessa came to me.””

Vanessa whispered, “Stop.””

“She was nineteen.””

“I said stop.””

“She was terrified.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“What happened?””

Ethan continued.

“She had nowhere to go.””

“Why?””

“Because my mother found out.””

“Found out what?””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“That she was pregnant.””

I stared.

“That doesn't explain anything.””

“It does.””

He lowered his voice.

“My mother believed some things belonged to her.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“She was sick.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

“Your mother?””

“Yes.””

“What did she do?””

Ethan looked around.

The hospital was crowded.

People walked by.

But his voice became quieter.

“She bought a baby.””

The sentence felt impossible.

“What?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Ethan continued.

“My mother had money. She had connections. She believed she could fix anything.””

“Fix what?””

“Vanessa was young. She didn't want the baby.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“That’s not true.””

“You told me you didn't.””

“I was scared.””

“You said you wanted to give her up.””

My eyes moved between them.

“You were going to give Lily up?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I didn't know what to do.””

Ethan nodded.

“That’s what my mother used.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means she made a deal.””

“With who?””

Ethan looked at Lily.

“Another mother.””

I felt sick.

“No.””

“She had just lost her baby.””

The room went silent.

“Whose baby?””

Ethan didn't answer.

“Whose baby?””

His eyes met mine.

“Yours.””

I stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa whispered, “Daniel…”

“No.””

Ethan spoke carefully.

“Your wife gave birth to one child.””

I looked at Lily.

“She…”

“She gave birth to a daughter.””

My voice was barely there.

“Then why are you saying my baby?””

“Because the hospital records were changed.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“It happened.””

“Why?””

“Because my mother paid for it.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying silently.

“You knew?””

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa.””

“I knew something was wrong.””

My chest tightened.

“But you didn't tell me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Losing her.””

I pointed at Lily.

“You let me raise a child believing she was mine.””

“She is yours.””

“You just said—”

“I mean she is yours.””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“Not because of blood.””

“Then because of what?””

She looked at Lily.

“Because I watched you become her father.””

I wanted to believe that.

I did.

But there were too many lies between us.

Ethan reached into his coat.

He pulled out a folder.

“I came here because you deserve the rest.””

I didn't take it.

“What is it?””

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Evelyn Price didn't just change Lily’s records.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“She changed another baby’s records too.””

My hands went cold.

“What baby?””

Ethan looked at me.

“The one Vanessa gave birth to.””

I stared.

“Where is that child?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan said:

“That's why your mother-in-law’s name appeared on the hospital request three days ago.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His face turned serious.

“Because someone is trying to find the baby that disappeared five years ago.””

A phone rang.

Not mine.

Not Vanessa’s.

Ethan looked down.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then all color left his face.

He lowered the phone slowly.

“What happened?”” Vanessa asked.

Ethan looked directly at Lily.

Then at me.

“The person looking for the baby already found her.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Ethan’s voice dropped.

“Your wife’s biological daughter’s real father.””

The lights above us flickered.

And then the hospital security doors locked automatically.

A voice came over the intercom.

“Attention. All visitors remain where they are.””

Ethan looked toward the entrance.

“They're here.””

I tightened my grip around Lily.

“Who?””

Ethan whispered one name.

A name I had never heard before.

But Vanessa had.

Because the moment he said it, she collapsed into the chair.

“Daniel…”

Her voice shook.

“That’s the man my mother was running from.””

May you like

And through the glass doors of the hospital lobby, a stranger stepped inside.

Carrying an old photograph of a newborn baby.
