Chapter 6: The Baby They Switched
“She brought home the wrong baby.””
Vanessa's words hung in the air.
I stared at her.
“No.””
Her shoulders shook.
“I didn't know at first.””
“You just said she brought home the wrong baby.””
“I know.””
“Then whose baby is Lily?””
Vanessa looked toward the corridor where Jonathan had disappeared.
“I don't know.””
My voice rose.
“You don't know?””
The security alarm finally stopped.
The waiting room fell quiet again.
Mason was standing beside the chairs, staring at us.
Lily had wrapped both arms around my leg.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You have thirty seconds to start telling me the truth.””
She wiped her face.
“My mother arranged the switch.””
“Between which babies?””
“One was mine.””
“And the other?””
“I never knew her name.””
“Then how did you know she wasn't yours?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because I recognized my baby.””
I stared at her.
“You recognized her?””
“She had a birthmark.””
“Where?””
“Behind her left ear.””
My hand went automatically to Lily's hair.
She had no birthmark there.
Not one.
I had bathed her.
Cut her hair.
Put sunscreen around her ears.
I knew every inch of that child's skin.
I turned to Vanessa.
“Did Lily ever have one?””
“No.””
My stomach dropped.
“Then you knew.””
“I suspected.””
“For five years?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“For the first few months, I believed my mother.””
“What changed?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“The baby wouldn't respond to me.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“I breastfed for a while. She wouldn't settle with me. She cried whenever I held her.””
“She was a newborn.””
“I know.””
“You're making this sound like proof.””
“It wasn't.””
Vanessa's eyes lifted.
“It was just the first thing that made me doubt.””
I pulled Lily closer.
“What happened next?””
“My mother told me not to ask questions.””
“And you listened.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she threatened to take the baby away.””
“She was already doing that.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She told me if I told anyone about the switch, the police would take Lily.””
I looked at Mason.
Then at Lily.
“Why would the police take her?””
“Because the other baby belonged to someone else.””
“You mean Jonathan's wife.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She'd already been searching.””
I remembered Jonathan’s voice.
My wife found out what happened.
“What's her name?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Clara.””
“Clara what?””
“Reed.””
I looked at the evidence bag on the table.
*BABY REED.*
Everything suddenly felt heavier.
I picked it up.
“Then this bracelet belonged to Clara's baby?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why is it here?””
“I don't know.””
I looked at Mason.
“Stay with Lily.””
He nodded.
I pulled Vanessa toward an empty hallway.
“Start at the beginning.””
She leaned against the wall.
“My mother knew Clara was pregnant.””
“How?””
“They lived in the same county.””
“So?””
“My mother helped her.””
“With what?””
“Money.””
I frowned.
“Why would she help a stranger?””
“Because Clara's husband was in prison.””
I stopped.
“Jonathan?””
“Yes.””
“What was he in prison for?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“That isn't believable.””
“I don't know everything!””
Her voice echoed down the hallway.
She immediately lowered it.
“My mother knew how to find desperate people. That's what she did.””
“She bought babies.””
“She called it helping.””
“You call it what?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Wrong.””
I nodded.
“Keep going.””
“Clara gave birth first.””
“What?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Two days before me.””
I stared.
“Then how could the babies have been switched?””
“They weren't switched at birth.””
She looked at me.
“They were switched later.””
“Where?””
“At the hospital nursery.””
I felt sick.
“How?””
“My mother bribed a nurse.””
“Do you know her name?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Marilyn Holt.””
I pulled out my phone.
“Is she still alive?””
“I don't know.””
“Where did she go?””
“My mother said she moved away.””
“Convenient.””
“Yes.””
I paced once.
“Then why did you have the baby bracelet marked Baby Reed?””
“Because that was her original bracelet.””
“Then where is Lily's original bracelet?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“My mother destroyed it.””
“You said that.””
“No.””
She looked directly at me.
“I meant she destroyed the bracelet from my baby.””
The hallway seemed to narrow.
“Then Lily may not be your biological daughter.””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“I think she isn't.””
I closed my eyes.
Five years.
Five years of bedtime stories.
Five years of birthday cakes.
Five years of believing Vanessa and I had built something together.
Then I remembered the letter.
“You said my mother-in-law changed the records.””
Vanessa nodded.
“What did she change?””
“Everything.””
“Birth certificate?””
“Yes.””
“Hospital record?””
“Yes.””
“DNA records?””
“No.””
I opened my eyes.
“No?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She couldn't change that.””
“Did we ever have a DNA test?””
She went pale.
“No.””
I almost laughed from disbelief.
“Then how did you know I was Lily's father?””
“I didn't.””
“You let me believe it.””
“You wanted to believe it.””
“That doesn't excuse you.””
“I know.””
The words came quietly.
Too quietly.
Then someone stepped out of a nearby doorway.
A nurse.
She was older, perhaps in her sixties.
Her expression made me stop.
She was staring at Vanessa.
“Are you Vanessa Price?””
Vanessa froze.
“Yes.””
The nurse walked closer.
“My name is Marilyn Holt.””
Vanessa stumbled backward.
I stared at the woman.
The name.
The nurse from the records.
The woman who supposedly disappeared.
Marilyn looked at me.
“You're Daniel.””
“Yes.””
She looked at Lily.
“Then she's the one.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“The one what?””
Marilyn began crying.
“I've been waiting five years to say this.””
Vanessa whispered, “You were supposed to leave.””
“I did.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because I couldn't live with it anymore.””
I stepped between them.
“Tell me what you did.””
Marilyn looked down.
“I switched two bracelets.””
“Only the bracelets?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“What else?””
“The bassinets.””
My mouth went dry.
“You switched the babies.””
“No.””
She looked at Lily.
“I moved one baby.””
“Which one?””
“The baby Vanessa gave birth to.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marilyn continued.
“She had a daughter. Healthy. Small. Dark hair.””
She glanced at Lily.
“And the other baby had blond hair.””
I looked at Lily.
She had always had light brown hair.
A detail I had never thought about.
“What happened to Vanessa’s baby?””
Marilyn looked at Vanessa.
“Your mother took her.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“To where?””
Marilyn shook her head.
“She said she had a family waiting.””
“What family?””
“I don't know.””
“Who received the baby?””
“I don't know.””
“Then how do you know she wasn't killed?””
Marilyn's eyes filled.
“Because I saw the transfer papers.””
I stepped closer.
“What did they say?””
“Private placement.””
“Name?””
She nodded.
“Carter.””
My blood froze.
“Carter?””
She looked directly at me.
“Daniel Carter.””
I stopped breathing.
“No.””
Marilyn nodded.
“Your name was on them.””
I shook my head.
“I didn't sign anything.””
“Not you.””
She swallowed.
“Your father.””
My father's face appeared in my mind.
Dead for six years.
A quiet man.
A man I remembered as strict but honest.
I stared at Marilyn.
“My father was involved?””
“He came to the hospital that night.””
“I was there.””
“Not until morning.””
I remembered the night.
Vanessa had said everyone left before morning.
But there was something I had forgotten.
My father had pulled me aside.
He had said, Trust me. This is better for everyone.
At the time, I'd thought he meant the hospital bills.
Now I wondered.
“What did he do?””
Marilyn's hands trembled.
“He signed for the baby.””
“Which baby?””
She looked at Lily.
“Her.””
I couldn't move.
“You're saying my father took this child?””
“No.””
Marilyn shook her head.
“He took the other baby.””
My brain struggled to understand.
“Why?””
“Because your father believed you were marrying Vanessa.””
I stared.
“You barely knew Vanessa.””
“He knew enough.””
“What does that have to do with another baby?””
Marilyn lowered her voice.
“He said you deserved your own family.””
Vanessa whispered, “No.””
Marilyn looked at her.
“Your mother sold the arrangement to him as a private adoption.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“My mother hated him.””
“Exactly.””
I looked at the nurse.
“Why would my father agree?””
Marilyn's eyes moved to Lily.
“Because he was told the baby belonged to you.””
A terrible silence followed.
Then I remembered the photograph on my phone.
Ethan.
The hospital room.
The newborn.
The date.
I opened the image and showed Marilyn.
“Is this the night?””
She stared at it.
“Yes.””
“And Ethan was here?””
“He came looking for Clara.””
“Did he see the baby?””
“Yes.””
“Which baby?””
Marilyn's expression collapsed.
“Both.””
My pulse raced.
“Then he knows.””
“Yes.””
“He knows which one was switched.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he tell me Lily was at the center of it?””
“Because she is.””
“Why?””
Marilyn took a deep breath.
“Because your father's records say he took the baby you were supposed to raise.””
I frowned.
“But I'm raising Lily.””
“No.””
She pointed at Lily.
“You're raising the baby your father brought home.””
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
Vanessa grabbed the wall.
“No…”
I turned toward my daughter.
Lily looked up at me, confused.
“Daddy?””
I crouched.
She reached for my hand.
I took it immediately.
Whatever the truth was, she was still mine in every way that mattered.
Then Marilyn said the words that changed everything.
“The baby your father took from the hospital wasn't given to your family.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“He gave that baby to someone else.””
“Who?””
Marilyn's lips trembled.
“Evelyn Price.””
Vanessa gasped.
“My mother?””
Marilyn nodded.
“Your father thought he was giving her the child she wanted.””
I couldn't breathe.
“What happened to that baby?””
Marilyn stared at me.
“She disappeared.””
Then she reached inside her nurse's bag.
She pulled out a sealed envelope.
And placed it in my hand.
“There was one more record your father didn't know existed.””
I looked at the front.
My name.
My father's handwriting.
May you like
And below it, a sentence:
*If Daniel ever learns about the switch, tell him where his real daughter is.*
