Chapter 2: The Truth Under the Mattress

For a few seconds, nobody breathed.

I stared at the sentence again.

*You are not her biological father.*

The paper shook between my fingers.

Behind me, Lily sniffled.

“Daddy?””

I turned immediately.

She was clutching her stuffed rabbit to her chest, her small face still swollen from crying.

I forced my voice to stay calm.

“It's okay, sweetheart.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

I held the letter away from her.

“Who wrote this?””

She stopped.

“Daniel—”

“Who wrote this?””

“I don't know.””

I looked at the handwriting.

“You know exactly who wrote it.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“You're letting one piece of paper destroy your judgment.””

“One piece of paper says I'm not Lily's father.””

“That doesn't mean it's true.””

“Then tell me it's a lie.””

She didn't.

That silence was louder than anything she could have said.

Lily looked between us.

“Daddy, am I in trouble?””

I dropped to my knees.

“No.””

“But Mommy said—”

Vanessa snapped, “Lily, go downstairs.””

Lily flinched.

I noticed it.

The way her shoulders rose.

The way her fingers tightened around the rabbit.

I stood again.

“Don't talk to her like that.””

Vanessa stared at me.

“You don't understand what's happening.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because this isn't the time.””

I held up the letter.

“When is the time?””

She looked toward Lily.

“After she goes to bed.””

I almost laughed.

“She is the reason we're having this conversation.””

Lily's eyes filled again.

I immediately softened.

“Hey. Look at me.””

She did.

“Did you put this envelope under your mattress?””

She shook her head.

“I found it.””

“Did someone give it to you?””

“No.””

“Did you read it?””

“Only my name.””

I nodded.

“Okay.””

She pointed at the letter.

“What does biological mean?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

I felt something inside me tear.

“It means…” I searched for words a five-year-old could understand.

“It means the person who helped make a child.””

Lily frowned.

“You did that.””

My throat tightened.

“I thought I did.””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“You're frightening her.””

“I’m trying to understand why someone is telling me I'm not her father.””

Lily looked up at me.

“But you are Daddy.””

I couldn't answer immediately.

Because she was right.

Whatever that paper meant, I was the man who had held her when she was born.

The man who had taught her to ride a bicycle.

The man whose side of the bed she crawled into after thunderstorms.

The man who knew she hated peas but loved strawberries.

Biology couldn't erase five years.

But it could explain why Vanessa had been hiding food.

Why she had been threatening Mason.

Why she had hidden a box labeled with Lily's name.

Why Evelyn’s name was suddenly appearing everywhere.

I looked back at Vanessa.

“Who is Lily's biological father?””

She whispered, “I don't know.””

“You don't know?””

“I don't.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“You weren't there.””

“Where?””

“When she was born.””

I froze.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa wiped her cheek.

“You were told she was premature.””

“She was.””

“You were told she needed oxygen.””

“Yes.””

“You were told I almost died.””

“You did.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not all of that was true.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What wasn't true?””

She sat on the edge of the bed.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked afraid.

“I was nineteen when I got pregnant.””

I stared at her.

“I know.””

“No. You know I was nineteen when I had Lily.””

She looked at the photograph in my hand.

“I was pregnant before I met you.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“You didn't know.””

“You told me she was mine.””

“I wanted her to be.””

“That isn't an answer.””

Vanessa looked down at her hands.

“When I met you, I was already carrying her.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“You met me when I was six months pregnant.””

“You said we met at that charity event.””

“We did.””

“Then why did you tell me Lily was mine?””

“Because you offered.””

I stared at her.

“Offered what?””

“A family.””

The words came out barely above a whisper.

“You knew I wanted to be a father. You knew I loved you. And when Lily was born, you were the only person who came to the hospital.””

“No.””

Vanessa's eyes lifted.

“Your parents came.””

“They weren't there that night.””

“They left before morning.””

I remembered.

The cold hospital corridor.

The buzzing fluorescent lights.

Vanessa asleep behind a curtain.

The tiny cry from the nursery.

A nurse asking me to sign something.

I had assumed it was paperwork for the birth certificate.

My hand went cold.

“What did I sign?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“What did I sign, Vanessa?””

“I don't remember.””

“You don't remember?””

She looked away.

I walked to the dresser and opened the top drawer.

Inside were years of old documents.

Insurance papers.

Marriage certificates.

Tax records.

I tore through them.

Vanessa stood.

“Stop.””

“No.””

“Daniel, please.””

I found a folder marked *LILY*.

Inside was her birth certificate.

I pulled it out.

My name was there.

*Father: Daniel Carter.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“How did my name get on this?””

“You signed the hospital paperwork.””

“I signed because you told me she was mine.””

“I was scared.””

“You lied.””

“I was nineteen!””

“And I was the idiot who believed you.””

Lily whimpered from the doorway.

I immediately lowered my voice.

“Go back to your room, sweetheart.””

“Are you mad at Mommy?””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Yes,” I said quietly.

“But not because of you.””

Lily nodded.

She took one step toward me.

“Am I still your daughter?””

My eyes burned.

I knelt.

“Always.””

She climbed into my arms.

I held her tightly.

Over her shoulder, I watched Vanessa stare at us.

Her face had gone completely blank.

Then Lily whispered into my ear.

“I know who the man is.””

I pulled back.

“What man?””

“The one in the picture.””

Vanessa went rigid.

I turned toward her.

“What does she mean?””

Lily pointed at the photograph.

“That man came to our house.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

“Lily, stop.””

“When?””

“Last month.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

Lily continued.

“He gave Mommy a bag.””

“What kind of bag?””

“A brown one.””

“What was inside?””

“I don't know.””

Vanessa crossed the room quickly.

“That never happened.””

Lily shrank against me.

I put an arm around her.

“Don't move.””

Vanessa stopped.

“What did he look like?”” I asked Lily.

She thought.

“He was tall.””

“Anything else?””

“He had a scar here.””

She touched the left side of her jaw.

My eyes locked on Vanessa.

“Who is he?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“You said you didn't know him.””

“I don't.””

“Lily just described a man from your photograph.””

“She's five.””

“She remembers him.””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“You're not listening to me.””

“Then make me listen.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because he's dangerous.””

Silence.

I stared at her.

“Dangerous how?””

She looked toward the bedroom window.

Then toward the hallway.

Then finally at me.

“He knows where we live.””

I felt Lily's arms tighten around my neck.

“Who?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“His name is Ethan Price.””

The surname hit me.

Price.

Evelyn Price.

I looked at the photograph again.

“Your mother?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He's my brother.””

I stared at her.

“You told me you were an only child.””

“I lied.””

“How many things have you lied about?””

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“Why would your brother care about Lily?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Why would he come to this house?””

Still nothing.

Then my phone vibrated.

Once.

Twice.

I pulled it from my pocket.

Unknown number.

A message appeared.

*You finally opened the letter.*

I stopped breathing.

Another message came before I could move.

*Good. Now ask Vanessa what happened the night Lily was born.*

Then a photograph appeared.

My hands went numb.

It showed a hospital room.

Vanessa at nineteen.

Exhausted.

Holding a newborn baby.

And standing beside the bed was the same man from the old photograph.

Ethan Price.

But he wasn't looking at Vanessa.

He was looking directly at the camera.

May you like

And beneath the photograph was one final message:

*She never told you whose baby was in her arms.*
