Chapter 7: The Daughter I Never Knew
I couldn't open the envelope.
Not immediately.
My fingers were wrapped around it, but my mind refused to accept what it meant.
My father.
A man who had been buried for six years.
A man I had spent my entire life trusting.
His handwriting.
His secret.
His words.
*If Daniel ever learns about the switch, tell him where his real daughter is.*
I looked at Marilyn.
“Where did you get this?””
She looked exhausted.
“Your father left it with me.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew one day the truth would come out.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Marilyn looked at me sadly.
“I wish I was wrong.””
“You're telling me my father knew?””
“Yes.””
“He knew Lily wasn't my biological daughter?””
“Yes.””
“And he knew where my biological daughter was?””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“How long?””
Marilyn looked down.
“Since the night she was born.””
I felt something break inside me.
Six years.
My father had carried this secret to his grave.
And I had never known.
Vanessa moved closer.
“Daniel…”
I turned toward her.
“No.””
She stopped.
“I need you to understand something.””
Her eyes filled.
“I do.””
“No, you don't.””
My voice shook.
“I spent five years waking up every morning thinking I had a normal family.””
I looked at Lily.
“I watched her take her first steps.””
My voice cracked.
“I taught her to say my name.””
Lily squeezed my fingers.
“Daddy.””
I looked down at her.
And my heart broke all over again.
Because no matter what the truth was, this little girl had done nothing wrong.
She was not a mistake.
She was not a secret.
She was not a piece on someone else's chessboard.
She was my daughter.
But somewhere out there...
A child connected to me by blood had grown up without me.
I looked at Marilyn.
“Where is she?””
The nurse hesitated.
“Before I tell you, you need to understand what happened.””
“I don't need another story.””
“You do.””
She looked at Vanessa.
“All of you do.””
We moved to a private consultation room.
The hospital hallway was too crowded.
Too many eyes.
Too many strangers walking past while our entire lives fell apart.
Mason sat beside Lily.
He held her hand.
It was strange.
Two children.
Both caught in the middle of a nightmare created by adults.
Marilyn placed the envelope on the table.
“Your father came back to the hospital two weeks after the birth.””
I stared.
“He came back?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“He had doubts.””
“What kind?””
“He realized Evelyn had lied.””
Vanessa whispered, “About what?””
Marilyn looked at her.
“About the adoption.””
Vanessa went still.
“What adoption?””
Marilyn sighed.
“Your mother told Daniel’s father that a baby needed a home.””
My hands tightened.
“She told him the baby was abandoned?””
“Yes.””
“And she wasn't?””
“No.””
“Then where was my daughter?””
Marilyn looked at the envelope.
“Your father found out the baby had a mother.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
“Clara Reed.””
The room went silent.
Jonathan's wife.
The woman who died searching for her child.
“My father knew?””
“Yes.””
“What did he do?””
Marilyn looked away.
“He tried to fix it.””
I laughed bitterly.
“By hiding it?””
“He was ashamed.””
“That doesn't help.””
“No.””
She nodded.
“It doesn't.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The paper was old.
The ink faded.
I recognized the handwriting instantly.
My father's.
My hands trembled as I read.
*Daniel,*
*If you are reading this, then I have failed to protect you from the truth.*
I stopped.
Protect me.
That was the phrase people used when they wanted to justify secrets.
I continued.
*The night your daughter was born, I believed I was helping you. I believed I was giving you the family you deserved.*
My throat tightened.
*Evelyn Price told me Vanessa's baby needed a father. She told me the child had no one. She told me you loved Vanessa and wanted to raise her.*
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face was covered in tears.
*I was wrong.*
I kept reading.
*Two weeks later, I learned the truth. The child had a mother. A mother searching for her.*
My vision blurred.
*I went back to the hospital and found Marilyn. She told me about the switch. She told me Vanessa's daughter had been taken.*
I stopped.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
*I wanted to tell you.*
The next line was darker.
*But Evelyn threatened to destroy everything.*
My eyes narrowed.
What did that mean?
*She told me if I exposed the truth, she would make sure Daniel lost the child he loved.*
I looked at Lily.
My breathing became shallow.
*She knew you would choose Lily. She knew you were already her father.*
A tear dropped onto the paper.
*And she was right.*
I closed my eyes.
Because that was the worst part.
My father understood me.
He knew exactly what I would do.
He knew I would choose Lily.
Even if she wasn't biologically mine.
I kept reading.
*I spent years trying to find where Evelyn sent your daughter. I discovered only one thing.*
My fingers tightened.
*She was placed with someone connected to the Price family.*
I looked at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
I read the final lines.
*Daniel, your daughter is alive.*
My heart stopped.
*Her name is Emma Reed.*
The room disappeared.
*She is ten minutes younger than Lily.*
I looked up.
“Emma.””
Marilyn nodded.
“That was her name.””
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
Then the door opened.
A police officer stepped inside.
“Daniel Carter?””
Everyone turned.
“Yes?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“I need to speak with you.””
“About what?””
He glanced at Lily.
Then at the documents.
“About Jonathan Reed.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
“He was found outside.””
“Is he okay?””
The officer hesitated.
“No.””
Vanessa stood.
“What happened?””
“He was attacked.””
The room went silent.
“By who?””
The officer looked at the folder in his hand.
“We don't know yet.””
I felt a chill.
“Why are you here?””
The officer opened the folder.
“Because before it happened, Jonathan gave this to hospital security.””
He handed me a photograph.
I looked down.
It was a picture of a little girl.
Maybe five years old.
Dark hair.
Brown eyes.
Standing in front of a small yellow house.
On the back was a handwritten note.
*Emma Reed. Age 5.*
My hands shook.
“She’s alive.””
The officer nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at the picture.
Her face had changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“You know that house.””
Her eyes filled.
“Daniel…”
“You know where she is.””
She didn't answer.
“You know.””
Vanessa whispered, “I saw her.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I saw Emma.””
“When?””
“Three years ago.””
My chest tightened.
“Three years?””
She nodded.
“My mother took me there.””
“Why?””
“To show me.””
“Show you what?””
Her voice broke.
“The daughter I was supposed to have.””
I stared at her.
“You met her.””
“Yes.””
“And you left her there.””
“I tried to take her.””
My anger faded slightly.
“What stopped you?””
Vanessa looked at the picture.
“My mother.””
“What did she say?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“She told me if I took Emma, Lily would disappear.””
My heart sank.
Evelyn had controlled everything.
Even from the grave.
I looked at the photograph again.
A little girl.
My daughter.
A child I had never held.
Never comforted.
Never watched grow.
A child who had spent five years somewhere else.
Then the officer spoke.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked up.
“What?””
He hesitated.
“The house where Emma was living…”
“Yes?””
“It was abandoned yesterday.””
My blood went cold.
“Where is Emma?””
The officer looked at Vanessa.
“That's why we're here.””
He placed another photograph on the table.
A recent one.
A security camera image.
A little girl being carried into a car.
By a person whose face was hidden.
But the jacket was familiar.
The same dark jacket.
The same scarred hand.
I looked at Ethan's photograph.
Then at the image.
The person taking my daughter was not a stranger.
It was someone who had been standing beside us all night.
The officer whispered:
“Mr. Carter…”
I stared at him.
“Your daughter was taken by someone inside this hospital.””
And behind me, Lily suddenly spoke.
“Daddy.””
I turned.
She was staring at the photograph.
Her face had gone pale.
“I know him.””
I froze.
“Who?””
She pointed at the blurred figure.
“The man who came to Mommy's room.””
Vanessa stood up.
“No.””
Lily nodded slowly.
“He gave Mommy the brown bag.””
My blood ran cold.
Because the man carrying my missing daughter…
was the same man who had been hiding food from Lily.
The same man whose name was written on the old photograph.
Ethan Price.
May you like
But Ethan was already gone.
And somewhere in the city, my other daughter was with him.
