Chapter 9: The Truth We Were All Running From

For a moment, nobody moved.

Claire stood beneath the porch light, tears streaming down her face.

Emily stood in my arms.

Daniel stood between us.

And across the street, inside the black car, someone was watching.

Richard Hale.

The man whose name had appeared in every secret.

The man connected to the hospital records.

The man who had supposedly controlled the story of my daughter’s life before I even knew there was a story.

I tightened my arms around Emily.

Claire looked at me.

Not angry.

Not demanding.

Just broken.

“Emma,” she whispered.

I didn’t know what to say.

Because every emotion existed at once.

Anger.

Confusion.

Fear.

And something I hated admitting.

Understanding.

She wasn’t a stranger.

She was a mother looking at her child.

But Emily was my child too.

“Why are you here?”” I asked.

Claire looked past me.

At Emily.

“Because I ran out of time.””

The words sent a chill through me.

“What does that mean?””

Claire looked toward the car.

“We need to get inside.””

Daniel immediately shut the door.

He locked it.

Then locked it again.

Michael stayed near the window, watching the street.

“He’s still there.””

Claire nodded.

“I know.””

I looked at her.

“You knew he would come?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Her expression changed.

“Because he’s been following me for years.””

The room became silent.

Emily was still staring at Claire.

Like she was trying to understand why a stranger felt familiar.

Claire slowly lowered herself to Emily’s height.

“Hi.””

Emily didn’t answer.

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

My daughter looked at her.

“For what?””

Claire covered her mouth.

Like hearing Emily speak was too painful.

“For not finding you sooner.””

Emily tilted her head.

“Why didn’t you?””

The question was simple.

Childlike.

But it cut through the room.

Claire looked down.

“Because someone made sure I couldn’t.””

Her eyes moved toward Daniel.

He looked away.

I noticed.

And so did Claire.

“Daniel knows.””

My stomach tightened.

“Knows what?””

Claire stood.

“Everything.””

I turned.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t speak.

That was enough.

“You knew she was alive.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

My chest hurt.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked at Emily.

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

“Fix what?””

He swallowed.

“The past.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t fix the past by hiding it.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“I know.””

For the first time, Daniel looked truly broken.

Not afraid of being caught.

Afraid of what he had done.

Claire walked toward the table.

“Richard Hale used everyone.””

Michael followed.

“He used Daniel.””

“Yes.””

She looked at my husband.

“And he used me.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Because of the research.””

Again.

The research.

The word that had been following us.

“What research?””

Daniel answered this time.

“The neonatal program.””

I looked at him.

“Explain it.””

He sat down.

“The hospital was developing treatments for babies born with severe complications.””

“And?””

“The program needed data.””

I felt uneasy.

“Data from what?””

Daniel hesitated.

“From successful and unsuccessful cases.””

Michael’s face darkened.

“You mean from children.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The room felt colder.

Claire continued.

“Richard believed children with similar medical histories could help prove his theories.””

My eyes widened.

“And Emily?””

Claire looked at her.

“Emily survived.””

A painful silence.

“She was the case he cared about most.””

“Why?””

Daniel answered.

“Because Emily responded to treatment better than expected.””

I stared.

“So this is why he took her?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“This is why he wanted control over her.””

I looked toward the window.

At the black car outside.

“What does he want now?””

Claire’s face changed.

Fear.

“He wants the records.””

“What records?””

“The original hospital files.””

Michael frowned.

“Why?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because they prove what he did.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel quietly said:

“He falsified patient information.””

I looked at him.

“And you helped him.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“But I didn’t know the entire truth.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“You knew enough.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

That was the first time I saw him accept responsibility.

Then the lights went out.

Every person in the room froze.

The house fell into darkness.

Emily grabbed my hand.

“Mom.””

“I’m here.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Everyone looked toward the ceiling.

Claire whispered:

“No.””

Michael immediately moved.

“What?””

“She found us.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

Claire’s face went pale.

“The other Emily.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel stood.

“Impossible.””

Claire shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

A noise came from the hallway.

Slow footsteps.

Coming downstairs.

Everyone went silent.

Then a girl appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

She looked about eight years old.

Same height.

Same hair.

Same eyes.

As my daughter.

Emily screamed.

Not because she was scared.

Because she recognized her.

The girl looked at her.

And whispered:

“Finally.””

I couldn’t move.

My brain couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

Two girls.

Same face.

Same age.

Standing in the same room.

Daniel whispered:

“No…”

The girl looked at him.

“Hello, Daddy.””

The word hit like a weapon.

Emily stepped behind me.

The other girl smiled sadly.

“You never told her.””

Daniel looked terrified.

“Who are you?””

The girl tilted her head.

“You know.””

Claire stepped forward.

“No.””

The girl looked at her.

“You left me too.””

Claire’s face collapsed.

“I thought you were gone.””

The girl smiled.

“That’s what everyone wanted you to believe.””

I felt dizzy.

“Who are you?””

The girl looked at me.

And answered:

“My name is Emily.””

My daughter started crying.

“No.””

The girl looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Then she said something that made everyone freeze.

“But you’re not the original.””

The room went completely silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

The girl looked at him.

“You stole my life.””

“No.””

“You took my name.””

“No.””

“You gave my identity to her.””

Daniel’s face turned white.

I looked at him.

“What is she talking about?””

He didn’t answer.

I grabbed his arm.

“Daniel.””

His silence was unbearable.

Finally, he whispered:

“When Richard said Claire’s baby died…”

He looked at my daughter.

“He lied.””

Claire covered her mouth.

“No…”

Daniel continued.

“There were two children.””

My heart stopped.

“The first Emily…”

He looked at the other girl.

“Was Sarah Carter’s daughter.””

“And my Emily?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I don’t know how to say this.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“Say it.””

He closed his eyes.

“Your Emily…”

A tear fell down his face.

“She was never supposed to have that name.””

I looked at my daughter.

The little girl who had called me Mom every day.

The little girl I had loved since the moment I held her.

“No.””

My voice broke.

“No.””

The other girl stepped closer.

“I’m not here to hurt her.””

She looked at Emily.

“I just want my life back.””

Then the front window shattered.

Everyone screamed.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Michael pulled us down.

Daniel rushed toward the door.

And outside, the black car was gone.

But on the ground beside the broken window…

Was a small envelope.

With one message written on it.

*The DNA results are inside.*

My hands shook as I opened it.

Because I already knew.

Whatever was inside would decide everything.

And when I pulled out the paper…

I saw two names.

Two girls.

Two mothers.

Two different truths.

And one final line:

*Biological match confirmed: Emily Carter.*

But beneath it was another note.

May you like

Written by Richard Hale.

*Now you know which one is mine.*
