Chapter 8: The Child Who Was Never Meant to Be Found
I picked up the photograph with trembling hands.
The paper felt old.
Too old.
Like it had been hidden somewhere for years, waiting for the right moment to be discovered.
On the front was a little girl.
She looked about three years old.
Same dark hair.
Same round eyes.
Same small smile.
My daughter.
But not my daughter.
At least, that was what my mind kept telling me.
Because Emily was eight years old.
This child looked younger.
And yet the resemblance was impossible to ignore.
I turned the photo over.
The words written on the back stared back at me.
*The first Emily Carter.*
My fingers went numb.
“Daniel.””
My husband stepped closer.
The second he saw the writing, his face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know what this means,” I said.
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He swallowed.
“I’ve seen that name before.””
My chest tightened.
“Where?””
He looked toward Michael.
Michael looked equally disturbed.
Neither man wanted to speak.
That was when I knew.
This wasn’t another forgotten detail.
This was the center of everything.
“Tell me.””
Daniel sat down slowly.
“There was another child.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
He rubbed his forehead.
“When Claire gave birth, there was another patient.””
“Another patient?””
“Yes.””
“Another baby?””
Daniel nodded.
My stomach twisted.
“Explain.””
He looked at the photograph.
“Before Emily was born, Claire was part of a medical program at the hospital.””
“What kind of program?””
“Experimental neonatal care.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Claire’s pregnancy was complicated. The doctors believed Emily might not survive after birth.””
My heart hurt hearing her name.
“So they tested treatments.””
Daniel nodded.
“But there was another mother in the same program.””
“Who?””
“Her name was Sarah Carter.””
The name sounded familiar.
Not because I knew her.
Because it felt like I should have.
“What happened to her?””
Daniel looked away.
“She gave birth the same week as Claire.””
“And?””
“She had a daughter.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“The first Emily Carter.””
Daniel nodded.
“She named her daughter Emily.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Two babies.
Two Emilys.
One hospital.
One secret.
“What happened to Sarah’s baby?””
Daniel was quiet.
Then Michael answered.
“She died.””
I looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because that’s what Richard Hale told everyone.””
Again.
Richard Hale.
The same name appearing everywhere.
The same person connected to every missing piece.
Daniel continued.
“After Sarah’s baby died, Richard became obsessed with the research data.””
“What research?””
“The treatments they were developing.””
I stared at him.
“You’re saying this is about medicine?””
“Yes.””
“But what does that have to do with Emily?””
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s what I don’t understand.””
A sound came from the hallway.
A small movement.
We all turned.
Emily was standing there.
I immediately walked toward her.
“Sweetheart, you should be in bed.””
She looked at the photograph in my hand.
“Who is that?””
I froze.
I didn’t know how to answer.
Before I could speak, Emily walked closer.
“That’s me.””
My heart stopped.
“No, honey.””
She pointed at the picture.
“That’s me.””
Her voice was certain.
Not confused.
Certain.
Michael stared at her.
“Emily…”
She looked at him.
“She came to me.””
A chill ran through the room.
“Who came to you?””
“The woman.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What woman?””
Emily looked at him.
“The woman who looks like me.””
Nobody spoke.
I knelt down.
“Sweetheart, what did she say?””
Emily hugged her rabbit.
“She said I wasn’t supposed to be here.””
My heart broke.
“What does that mean?””
She shook her head.
“She said Daddy took something that belonged to her.””
Daniel went pale.
“Emily.””
She flinched.
I immediately turned.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
My daughter was afraid.
Of him.
That realization hurt more than anything.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“I’m sorry.””
Emily looked down.
“She told me not to trust him.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at my daughter.
“Did she hurt you?””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
“Did she touch you?””
“No.””
“Then why are you scared?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because she was crying.””
That answer confused me.
“Crying?””
She nodded.
“She said she missed me.””
The room became silent.
Michael looked at the photograph.
Then whispered:
“Impossible.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He pointed at the picture.
“The girl in the photo.””
“What about her?””
Michael swallowed.
“She’s not three years old.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What are you talking about?””
He took the photograph from my hand.
Looked at the back.
Then the front.
“Look at the date.””
I checked.
The date was printed in the corner.
My breathing stopped.
The photograph had been taken seven years ago.
Seven.
The girl in the picture looked exactly like Emily.
But if the date was real…
That girl would be almost the same age as Emily.
Daniel stood.
“That’s impossible.””
Michael looked at him.
“No.””
His voice was low.
“That’s the point.””
My mind raced.
A child who looked exactly like Emily.
A photograph from seven years ago.
A woman who looked like my daughter.
A hospital secret.
A missing mother.
A dead child.
Nothing connected.
And yet somehow everything did.
Then my phone rang.
The same unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
This time, I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
No response.
Then a child’s voice.
A little girl.
“Mom?””
My blood froze.
It wasn’t Emily.
It was another child.
“Who is this?””
The girl started crying.
“Please don’t let him take me again.””
I stood completely still.
“Who are you?””
A whisper came through the phone.
“I'm Emily.””
I looked at my daughter.
She was standing right in front of me.
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
“No.””
The child on the line cried harder.
“He said you would forget me.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Who said that?””
A pause.
Then:
“Daddy.””
The call ended.
The entire house went silent.
Daniel looked at me.
“No.””
But he wasn’t looking at me.
He was looking at the phone.
Like he knew something terrible had just happened.
Michael grabbed the phone.
“Call it back.””
He pressed the number.
Nothing.
The line was disconnected.
Then the doorbell rang.
Everyone froze.
It was nearly three in the morning.
Nobody should have been outside.
Daniel moved first.
“Stay here.””
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I need to see who it is.””
Michael stood beside him.
“I’m coming.””
They walked toward the front door.
I held Emily close.
The doorbell rang again.
Once.
Twice.
Then a woman’s voice came from outside.
A voice I recognized.
The same voice from the phone.
“Emma.””
I stopped breathing.
The woman outside spoke again.
“Please.””
A pause.
“I need to see my daughter.””
Daniel opened the door.
And standing under the porch light was a woman.
Older than the pictures.
Tired.
Broken.
But unmistakable.
Claire Anderson.
She looked past Daniel.
Straight at Emily.
Tears filled her eyes.
Then she whispered:
“There she is.””
Emily stared at her.
And then, in a voice barely above a whisper, my daughter said:
“Mom…”
But she wasn’t looking at me.
She was looking at Claire.
And behind Claire, parked across the street in the darkness…
May you like
Was a black car.
With Richard Hale sitting inside.
