Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Closet Door

I didn’t scream.

That was the strangest part.

A person should scream when they see something impossible.

A person should run.

A person should call the police.

But when the closet door in my daughter’s bedroom slowly opened and a second figure appeared on the camera feed, my body did none of those things.

I just stared.

Frozen.

My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

There was someone else inside Emily’s room.

Someone who had been hiding in the closet.

Someone who had been there while my daughter slept.

I looked at Daniel.

His face was pale.

Not confused.

Not shocked.

Terrified.

And that scared me more than the figure on the screen.

Because Daniel wasn’t seeing a stranger.

He was seeing a nightmare he already knew.

“Who is that?”” I whispered.

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Who is that, Daniel?””

He looked away.

That single movement told me everything.

My hands started shaking.

“You know.””

“Emma…”

“You know who is in our daughter’s room.””

He ran a hand through his hair.

“I need you to calm down.””

I almost laughed.

Calm down.

That was what people said when they didn’t want you asking questions.

“My daughter is eight years old,” I said, my voice trembling.

“There is someone hiding in her bedroom, and you’re telling me to calm down?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“No, you listen to me. For seven nights, Emily told me someone was beside her. She told me her bed felt smaller. She told me someone was lying next to her.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

I saw guilt.

Only for a second.

But it was there.

“And you knew.””

“I didn’t know this would happen.””

The words left his mouth before he could stop them.

Silence filled the room.

I stared at him.

“What did you just say?””

Daniel looked like he regretted speaking.

“Emma—”

“No.””

I held up my phone.

“What did you mean by ‘this’?””

He looked toward Emily’s bedroom.

The camera feed was still running.

On the screen, Emily sat completely still on her bed.

The closet door was open.

The figure stood in the darkness.

But it wasn’t moving.

Almost like it knew we were watching.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“There are things I need to explain.””

“Now.””

“Not here.””

I stared at him.

“Not here?””

I pointed toward the phone.

“My daughter is in that room.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you standing here?””

His jaw tightened.

Because he had no answer.

I walked past him.

“Emma.””

I ignored him.

I headed toward Emily’s room.

The closer I got, the colder the hallway felt.

Every instinct inside me screamed not to open that door.

But I was her mother.

Fear didn’t matter.

I reached the handle.

Then Daniel grabbed my wrist.

“Wait.””

I turned around.

For the first time in our marriage, I saw something in his eyes I had never seen before.

Panic.

“Please,” he whispered.

That one word stopped me.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I realized he was afraid too.

“What are you afraid of?”” I asked.

Daniel looked down.

Then he said something I would never forget.

“I’m afraid you’re going to find out what I should have told you eight years ago.””

My heart sank.

Eight years.

The exact age of our daughter.

Before I could ask another question, Emily screamed.

“Mom!””

The sound ripped through the house.

I pushed Daniel away and ran.

I opened the bedroom door so hard it hit the wall.

“Emily!””

She was sitting in the middle of the bed, crying.

I rushed to her.

She grabbed me so tightly her fingers dug into my shirt.

“Mom, you came.””

I looked around the room.

The closet was closed.

The figure was gone.

The room was empty.

“Where is he?”” I asked.

Emily buried her face against me.

“He left.””

“Who left?””

She didn’t answer.

I held her shoulders gently.

“Sweetheart, I need you to tell me.””

Her lips trembled.

“The man.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What man?””

She looked toward Daniel.

And then she said:

“The one Daddy told me never to talk about.””

I turned slowly.

Daniel was standing in the doorway.

He looked like he had been hit.

“Daddy told you?””

Emily nodded.

“He said it was important.””

I looked at my husband.

“Explain.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he walked into the room and shut the door.

“Emma, listen carefully.””

“No.””

I stepped between him and Emily.

“You listen carefully. You are going to tell me everything.””

Daniel looked at our daughter.

Then at me.

“I need to explain something about before Emily was born.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with this?””

He swallowed.

“Everything.””

I waited.

He sat down on the edge of the bed.

Eight years of marriage.

Eight years of trust.

And suddenly, he looked like a stranger.

“Before you and I met,” he said quietly, “I had a patient.””

I stared.

“A patient?””

“Yes.””

“Daniel, what does a patient have to do with someone in our daughter’s room?””

His hands tightened.

“Her name was Claire.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way he said it made my stomach twist.

“She was young,” he continued.

“Twenty-four years old. She came to the hospital after an accident.””

“And?””

Daniel looked down.

“She died.””

The room became silent.

I waited for the rest.

But he didn’t continue.

“What does that have to do with Emily?””

Daniel looked at our daughter.

Then whispered:

“Claire had a daughter.””

My heartbeat changed.

No.

I didn’t want to hear the next words.

But he said them anyway.

“And that daughter was born the same year as Emily.””

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That was when I knew.

Whatever came next would change everything.

“Emma…”

His voice cracked.

“Emily wasn’t supposed to survive.””

The words felt unreal.

I looked at my daughter.

My beautiful little girl.

The child I carried.

The child I raised.

The child who called me Mom every morning.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked away.

“After Claire died, her baby was placed in temporary care.””

My chest tightened.

“Why are you telling me this?””

Because he wasn’t answering.

He was circling something.

Something horrible.

Then Emily spoke softly.

“Mom?””

I turned toward her.

She was holding her stuffed rabbit.

Her face was wet with tears.

“I think he’s angry.””

I froze.

“Who?””

She looked toward the closet.

“The man in the room.””

Daniel immediately stood.

“Emily.””

His voice was sharp.

Too sharp.

She flinched.

I looked at him.

“Don’t talk to her like that.””

His face softened.

“I’m sorry.””

But Emily wasn’t looking at him.

She was looking behind me.

Her eyes widened.

“Mom…”

A whisper.

A terrified whisper.

“Don’t turn around.””

Every muscle in my body locked.

Daniel looked past me.

His face went white.

Slowly, I turned.

Behind me, the closet door was opening again.

But this time…

The camera wasn’t the only thing watching.

We were there.

Inside the room.

And from the darkness behind the closet door, a voice spoke.

A man’s voice.

A voice I had never heard before.

But Daniel clearly recognized.

“Daniel.””

My husband stopped breathing.

The voice continued.

“You promised you would never tell her.””

May you like

And then Daniel whispered the words that shattered my world.

“I thought you were dead.””
